It's Official: Clinton's Popular Vote Win Came Entirely From California | Stock News & Stock Market Analysis - IBD

JOHN MERLINE
12/16/2016

Democrats who are having trouble getting out of the first stage of grief — denial — aren't being helped by the fact that, now that all the votes are counted, Hillary Clinton's lead in the popular vote has topped 2.8 million, giving her a 48% share of the vote compared with Trumps 46%.

To those unschooled in how the United States selects presidents, this seems totally unfair. But look more closely at the numbers and you see that Clinton's advantage all but disappears.

As we noted in this space earlier, while Clinton's overall margin looks large and impressive, it is due to Clinton's huge margin of victory in one state — California — where she got a whopping 4.3 million more votes than Trump.

California is the only state, in fact, where Clinton's margin of victory was bigger than President Obama's in 2012 — 61.5% vs. Obama's 60%.

But California is the exception that proves the true genius of the Electoral College — which was designed to prevent regional candidates from dominating national elections.

In recent years, California has been turning into what amounts to a one-party state. Between 2008 and 2016, the number of Californian's who registered as Democrats climbed by 1.1 million, while the number of registered Republicans dropped by almost 400,000.

What's more, many Republicans in the state had nobody to vote for in November.

There were two Democrats — and zero Republicans — running to replace Sen. Barbara Boxer. There were no Republicans on the ballot for House seats in nine of California's congressional districts.

At the state level, six districts had no Republicans running for the state senate, and 16 districts had no Republicans running for state assembly seats.

Plus, since Republicans knew Clinton was going to win the state — and its entire 55 electoral votes — casting a ballot for Trump was virtually meaningless, since no matter what her margin of victory, Clinton was getting all 55 votes.

Is it any wonder then, that Trump got 11% fewer California votes than John McCain did in 2008? (Clinton got 6% more votes than Obama did eight years ago, but the number of registered Democrats in the state climbed by 13% over those years.)

If you take California out of the popular vote equation, then Trump wins the rest of the country by 1.4 million votes. And if California voted like every other Democratic state — where Clinton averaged 53.5% wins — Clinton and Trump end up in a virtual popular vote tie. (This was not the case in 2012. Obama beat Romney by 2 million votes that year, not counting California.)

Meanwhile, if you look at every other measure, Trump was the clear and decisive winner in this election.

Amaranth - Wikipedia

Amaranth - Wikipedia

Most of the species from Amaranthus are summer annual weeds and are commonly referred to as pigweed.[2] Catkin-like cymes of densely packed flowers grow in summer or autumn.[3] Approximately 60 species are recognized, with inflorescences and foliage ranging from purple and red to green or gold. Members of this genus share many characteristics and uses with members of the closely related genus Celosia.
"Amaranth" derives from Greek ἀμάραντος[4] (amárantos), "unfading", with the Greek word for "flower"ἄνθος (ánthos), factoring into the word's development as amaranth. The more accurate amarant is an archaic variant.

South Sudan On Brink Of 'Rwanda-Like' Genocide, Commission Warns : The Two-Way : NPR

In a meeting of the U.N. Human Rights Council on Wednesday, a special commission to South Sudan described the state of the country in the starkest terms possible. Atrocities like murder and gang rape are happening on an "epic" scale, reported the commission's chief, who warned that the world's youngest country now "stands on the brink of an all-out ethnic civil war."

"A steady process of ethnic cleansing is already underway in some parts of the country. We don't use that expression lightly," said Yasmin Sooka, chairwoman of the Commission on Human Rights in South Sudan. "Targeted displacement along ethnic lines is taking place through killing, abductions, rape, looting and burning of homes."

In the statement delivered to the council, Sooka said approximately a quarter of South Sudan's population have had to leave their homes — about a million of whom have left the country as refugees. As of October, the inflation rate had ballooned to more than 800 percent, Sooka reported, and a third of South Sudan's teachers have fled the country.

Since December 2013, South Sudan has been embroiled in a civil war that began as a primarily political conflict, but has since taken shape between the country's two largest ethnic groups, the Dinka and the Nuer. At that time, South Sudan President Salva Kiir fell out with his former vice president, Riek Machar, over allegations of a coup attempt. Kiir, who is Dinka, and Machar, who is Nuer, gathered supporters from their respective tribes.

The recent spate of violence follows a particularly bloody summer, which saw hundreds of casualties amid heavy fighting in the country's capital, Juba. And the violence has eased little since then, Associated Press reporter Justin Lynch told NPR's Ailsa Chang this weekend:

"Women talked about being raped by soldiers based on their ethnicity. Men talked about being targeted for killings and arrest. And I even talked to one police officer who said that when he was going to collect bodies in the streets that had been killed, the army had attacked him."

Lynch, who had been reporting on human rights violations there for the AP, was arrested last week by government agents and deported. And he's not the only one: The Norwegian Refugee Council, an international humanitarian organization, says two of its senior staff members have been ordered to leave South Sudan within the span of a week.

And Sooka said the commission only expects the recent violence to intensify as South Sudan settles into its dry season, when fighting traditionally worsens. And she says she fears a lack of international interest in the violence will be interpreted as a green light for further brutality. She warned of a "Rwanda-like" descent into violence, referring to the 1994 genocide that claimed more than 800,000 lives along ethnic lines.

Sooka called for the immediate deployment of a "4,000-strong regional protection force" to the country, and called for that force to be deployed beyond the capital, as well.

"To be frank," Yasmin Sooka said, "we are running out of adjectives to describe the horror."

PewDiePie Deletes Other Channel; Makes Point About Media

To further drive his point home, the last frame of the above clip says that PewDiePie will now delete his main channel when he reaches 100 million subscribers, which will obviously not happen for quite some time to come. Presumably, the media at large won’t assume he’s being serious this time, although one never knows for sure.

With the glut of “fake news” currently littering the internet – stories that are provably untrue, but presented as if they’re legitimate reporting in order to get clicks – one wonders if how quickly the media fell for what was ultimately a combination of a joke and a publicity stunt by PewDiePie is a symptom of that larger problem. After all, if PewDiePie’s own subscribers didn’t take his “threat” seriously, then why did anyone else? Because they read about it in countless articles that presented the story that way. It’s certainly food for thought, if nothing else.

ApocryphaEdit

The (non-canonStar Trek III novelization further suggests that the planet and system may have been unstable due not only to the inclusion of protomatter in the matrix, but also to being formed entirely from the matter of the Mutara Nebula rather than having been detonated on a pre-existing world, as originally intended. The Genesis Wave series of novels (set in the 24th century and featuring the crew of the USS Enterprise-E) expand upon this premise, noting that the Genesis Cave continued to exist inside the Regula One planetoid (which contradicts the movie novel, which shows that the plants inside the cave had mutated into something completely different than what they had started out as), and features some insight as to what happened after the events of The Wrath of Khan, including the revelation that Carol Marcus survived into the twenty-fourth century, although kept in secret due to the danger of her knowledge of the Genesis Project.

The Curse of Cash (download torrent) - TPBThe Curse of Cash - Kenneth S. Rogoff [epub]

The world is drowning in cash - and it's making us poorer and less safe. In The Curse of Cash, Kenneth Rogoff, one of the world's leading economists, makes a persuasive and fascinating case for an idea that until recently would have seemed outlandish: getting rid of most paper money.

Even as people in advanced economies are using less paper money, there is more cash in circulation--a record $1.4 trillion in U.S. dollars alone, or $4,200 for every American, mostly in $100 bills. And the United States is hardly exceptional. So what is all that cash being used for? The answer is simple: a large part is feeding tax evasion, corruption, terrorism, the drug trade, human trafficking, and the rest of a massive global underground economy.

As Rogoff shows, paper money can also cripple monetary policy. In the aftermath of the recent financial crisis, central banks have been unable to stimulate growth and inflation by cutting interest rates significantly below zero for fear that it would drive investors to abandon treasury bills and stockpile cash. This constraint has paralyzed monetary policy in virtually every advanced economy, and is likely to be a recurring problem in the future.

The Curse of Cash offers a plan for phasing out most paper money - while leaving small-denomination bills and coins in circulation indefinitely - and addresses the issues the transition will pose, ranging from fears about privacy and price stability to the need to provide subsidized debit cards for the poor.

While phasing out the bulk of paper money will hardly solve the world's problems, it would be a significant step toward addressing a surprising number of very big ones. Provocative, engaging, and backed by compelling original arguments and evidence, The Curse of Cash is certain to spark widespread debate

IRS Data: American Dream Evaporates, Amid Mass Immigration, Automation - Breitbart

Under President Barack Obama, the federal government annually imports at least one million legal immigrants, plus almost one million temporary white-collar guest workers and blue-collar guest workers for jobs sought by Americans. Those two million new foreign workers — plus the roughly eight million illegal immigrants in jobs — compete against the four million young Americans who begin looking for jobs each year.
That wage-cutting competition shifts roughly $500 billion per year from wages and salaries into company profits, boosting investors and Wall Street, but reducing productivity growth and creating a huge population of unemployed men and of government-dependent poor people in the United States.

Maggots Found in Veteran's Wound at Oklahoma VA After Family Begged Staff to Treat Bandages - Cortney O'Brien

Maggots Found in Veteran's Wound at Oklahoma VA After Family Begged Staff to Treat Bandages - Cortney O'Brien

A few days after we learned that a dentist infected hundreds of patients with HIV at the VA facility in Tomah, Wisconsin, we have a disturbing report that maggots were found in a veteran's wound in a separate VA clinic in Oklahoma.
A 73-year-old veteran named Owen Reese Peterson came to the Talihina Veterans Center with a case of sepsis this fall. On October 13, an incident report was filed indicating maggots had been found in one of his wounds. Executive Director Myles Deering acknowledged the incident but said it was the sepsis, not the maggots, that killed him.
If you ask Peterson's family, they'll tell you that Deering's explanation does little to erase the shocking discovery, nor the fact the clinic ignored their entreaties. The victim's surviving son, Raymie Parker, said he had repeatedly asked the VA staff to tend to his father's bandages, often to no avail.
“During the 21 days I was there, ... I pled with the medical staff, the senior medical staff, to increase his meds so his bandages could be changed,” Parker said. “I was met with a stonewall for much of that time.”
Three nurses and a physician's assistant have resigned after the incident before they had a chance to be fired. Just like in Tomah, where the dentist who infected patients with HIV was simply demoted to a desk job, no punishments have been enforced at Talihina for the gross negligence of our nation's heroes.
Pete Hegseth, who is rumored to be a candidate for Donald Trump's VA secretary, said on Fox News on Monday that he has "hope" that the VA can turn around because the president-elect has veterans a priority from "day one of his campaign."
The Concerned Veterans for America released the following statement in response to the Talihina shock.
“It is heartbreaking that the VA is treating sick and injured veterans in this degrading and negligent manner. Veterans made the ultimate sacrifice to defend us, and when they get home they deserve the absolute best care. We should never open the news to find headlines of maggots in the wounds of American heroes."

We're always trying to foresee the future a bit here at TPB. One of the things that we really know is that we as a society will always share. Digital communication has made that a lot easier and will continue to do so. And after the internets evolutionized data to go from analog to digital, it's time for the next step.
Today most data is born digitally. It's not about the transition from analog to digital anymore. We don't talk about how to rip anything without losing quality since we make perfect 1 to 1 digital copies of things. Music, movies, books, all come from the digital sphere. But we're physical people and we need objects to touch sometimes as well!
We believe that the next step in copying will be made from digital form into physical form. It will be physical objects. Or as we decided to call them: Physibles. Data objects that are able (and feasible) to become physical. We believe that things like three dimensional printersscanners and such are just the first step. We believe that in the nearby future you will print your spare sparts for your vehicles. You will download your sneakers within 20 years.
The benefit to society is huge. No more shipping huge amount of products around the world. No more shipping the broken products back. No more child labour. We'll be able to print food for hungry people. We'll be able to share not only a recipe, but the full meal. We'll be able to actually copy that floppy, if we needed one.
We believe that the future of sharing is about physible data. We're thinking of temporarily renaming ourselves to The Product Bay - but we had no graphical artist around to make a logo. In the future, we'll download one.

Can You Mix a Pre-Workout With Whey Protein? | Healthy Eating | SF Gate

Can You Mix a Pre-Workout With Whey Protein? | Healthy Eating | SF Gate

About Whey Protein

Whey protein is contained in whey, the liquid that is separated from the curds in cheese production. It is used in sports supplements because of its fast digestion rate. Whey protein is also used in infant formulas, medical nutrition supplements and as a food ingredient.

Benefits of Whey Protein Pre-Workout

Some research says pre-workout amino acids help speed up protein synthesis. Whey has been shown to increase protein synthesis when taken before and after a bout of resistance training. However, it was not clear if the effects were the result of taking whey before the workout, after it or both. A study published in 2010 in "Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise" found that exercisers who took whey protein prior to resistance training had a higher metabolic rate up to 48 hours after training than did the group that had no pre-workout whey.

Ingredient Interaction

The most common ingredients found in pre-workout supplement are caffeine, creatine and amino acids like L-arginine, beta-alanine, branched-chain amino acids, taurine and tyrosine. None of these ingredients interferes with the absorption of whey, or vice versa, to a significant degree.

Possible Problems

One potential problem when consuming any food, beverage or supplement pre-workout is cramping. Consider using more water than is called for in the supplement mixing directions to dilute the drink, allowing for easier digestion.
