The Man Who Was Thursday

The 2000 video game Deus Ex features several excerpts from the book and lists Gabriel Syme as a current resident of the 'Ton Hotel.
In Neil Gaiman's The Sandman comics, the Library of Dream's castle contains every story ever written plus every story dreamed of but never written. Among the latter is The Man Who Was October by G. K. Chesterton, which is supposedly a sequel to his Thursday.

'Christmas is dead' in Venezuela, and 2016 looks grim

'Christmas is dead' in Venezuela, and 2016 looks grim

Caracas (AFP) - "Christmas is dead," says Elise Belisario, who, like many Venezuelans, can't afford to hang decorations or make a traditional holiday meal this year.
And 2016 augurs bleak times too in this staggering oil giant, where the new year looks set to bring political power struggles and little respite from a crippling economic crisis.
Belisario lives in the sprawling slum of Petare, on the outskirts of Caracas, which is suffering this holiday season from the shortages and triple-digit inflation gripping Venezuela -- the twin tribulations of the once high-flying economy's demise.
Where Christmases past brought exuberant decorations and balconies drenched in lights, this year Petare's streets are drab and dark.
"There's just not enough money. We've switched off Christmas," said Belisario, a 28-year-old with two kids who recently lost her job.
When the oil money was flowing, Christmas was a consumer bonanza in Venezuela, a predominantly Catholic country with a flair for celebrations.
But that has changed as oil prices have plunged, and the opulent days under late leftist firebrand Hugo Chavez (1999-2013) have given way to the malaise plaguing his less charmed successor, Nicolas Maduro.
"We were rich and we didn't even know it," said Belisario.
At a nearby shop, cashier Olga Gonzalez, 50, dejectedly picks up the nearly empty piggy bank she has dressed up in a little Santa Claus suit in hopes of getting some traditional Christmas tips.
But there are no customers to leave them.
"People are more worried about buying food than giving gifts this year," she said.
- Political war -
Exasperated with empty supermarket shelves, runaway prices and violent crime, Venezuelans gave the opposition a landslide victory in legislative elections this month, ending the Chavez movement's 16-year monopoly on power.
But Maduro's term runs until 2019, and the power struggles of divided government mean things are likely to get worse before they get better, some political analysts warn.
Maduro, who called the poll result an "electoral coup," has already made clear he is ready to do battle with the "bourgeois assembly" from the moment it is inaugurated on January 5.
And his United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) appears determined to do all it can to reduce the new legislature's power before then.
It appointed 34 new judges to the country's highest court Wednesday after a series of marathon extraordinary sessions, drawing outrage from the opposition coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable (MUD).
The court could play a decisive role in disputes between the executive and legislative branches going forward.
The PSUV has also used the final days of its majority to convene a "national communal parliament," a sort of parallel legislature provided for under Venezuelan law -- though not the constitution -- and whose authority could become the subject of a bitter court battle.
- 'Make Maduro quit' -
The opposition appears ready to fight fire with fire.
Jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez said the new legislature's priority should be "to make Maduro quit before 2019," in an interview from his prison cell.
"There are constitutional mechanisms to do that," said Lopez, who was sentenced to 14 years in September on charges of inciting violence at anti-government protests -- a ruling that drew international condemnation.
MUD's new two-thirds majority in the legislature gives it the power to put legislation to a referendum, remove officials from office and call an assembly to draft a new constitution.
It could also use its momentum at the polls to petition for a referendum to remove Maduro next year, under an article of the constitution allowing elected officials to be recalled halfway through their terms.
MUD has vowed its first act will be to pass an amnesty law for Lopez and other "political prisoners." Maduro has vowed to veto it, even though the legislature could easily override it.
Political analyst Luis Vicente Leon warned the country faces a messy power struggle.
"Can 'Chavismo' mock the decision the Venezuelan people made at the ballot box? In the short term, it can, by controling the nation's institutions. But in the medium and long term, it's unsustainable," he said.
He predicted Venezuela faces a "serious crisis" that will eventually get so bad the warring political forces will have to find a compromise to take the country forward.

Star Wars Is Great and All, but There’s a New Spaceballs Movie in the Works « WXRT

Star Wars is all the rage this week, so we won’t pile on to that bandwagon in this post. There’s endless amounts of The Force Awakens news this week, so it might be a good time to let people know about Mel Brooks confirming that a Spaceballs sequel is in the early stages of development.Blastr is reporting that in an appearance on Adam Carolla’s podcast, Mel Brooks said that the new film is tentatively titled Spaceballs: The Search For More Money and that he hopes to start filming in 2016, after the release of The Force Awakens because, well, you need to see what you’re spoofing before you spoof it.
Also mentioned in the piece is the fact that he hopes to get as much of the original cast together as possible. Obviously, John Candy and the voice of Joan Rivers are out of play, and Rick Moranis might be tough to rope in because other than a few voice acting gigs, he’s been out of the film business for quite a while. He says that he’s not retired from acting, he’s just being very selective about which projects to take on. Will Mel be able to convince him? Has he already done so? We’ll find out soon.

Boffins unwrap bargain-basement processor that talks light and current • The Register

Christmas is a time of miracles, to paraphrase Hans Gruber, and US researchers claim to have pulled off one in silicon photonics: they say they've mainlined super-fast optic communications into a RISC CPU using cheap, bog-standard manufacturing techniques.
Chips using light to shunt data around a processor and to and from its external memory have been promised by Intel, IBM, and others for years now.
What these boffins claim they've come up with is a chip that can be mass produced, uses relatively little power, and uses light to sustain high-bandwidth transfers: the prototype has a bandwidth density of 300 gigabits per second per square millimetre, and needs 1.3W to shift a terabit a second straight from the die to off-chip memory. That means it outpaces today's server chips from Intel.
The brainiacs – hailing from MIT, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Colorado – have published a paper in Nature today detailing their 45nm dual-core RISC processor. They say its circuits marry light and electrical current in and outside the package.
"This is a milestone. It's the first processor that can use light to communicate with the external world,"said Vladimir Stojanović, professor of electrical engineering and computer sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, who led the development of the chip.
"No other processor has the photonic I/O in the chip."
Miloš Popović, an assistant professor in CU-Boulder’s Department of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering, added: "Light based integrated circuits could lead to radical changes in computing and network chip architecture in applications ranging from smartphones to supercomputers to large data centers, something computer architects have already begun work on in anticipation of the arrival of this technology."
The team designed the 3mm by 6mm chip with 70 million transistors and 850 photonic components. It was tested by fetching instructions, and manipulating data, stored in memory 10 metres away using optic connections.
"We figured out how to reuse the same materials and processing steps that comprise the electrical circuits to build high-performance optical devices in the same chip," said paper co-author Mark Wadefrom CU-Boulder. "This allows us to design complex electronic-photonic systems that can solve the communication bottleneck in computing."
The blueprints were sent off to the GlobalFoundries fab in Fishkill, New York, and built to order. The team has set up two companies to build and sell silicon using the technology for data-center systems.
Chen Sun, a researcher at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center, said that about 20 to 30 per cent of the power consumption of data centers gear is spent shifting data between processor, memory, and networking cards. Shifting to photonics should virtually eliminate that power burden, we're told.
"The advantage with optical is that with the same amount of power, you can go a few centimeters, a few meters or a few kilometers," he said.
"For high-speed electrical links, one metre is about the limit before you need repeaters to regenerate the electrical signal, and that quickly increases the amount of power needed. For an electrical signal to travel one kilometre, you'd need thousands of picojoules for each bit."
Chip builders who had planned on spending the festive season in a food coma will now no doubt be examining the paper and scrutinizing its claims. ®

Overview: Twenty years ago, the robots designed to fight our wars abandoned the battlefields. Then they turned their weapons on us.

Headstrong seventeen-year-old Nick has spent his whole life in a community in the wilderness, hiding out from the robots that have enslaved mankind. But when the bots discover the community's location, he, his tech-geek younger brother, Kevin, and adopted sister, Cass, barely make it out alive--only to discover that their home has been destroyed and everyone they love is missing.

All survivors were captured and taken to one of the robots' Cities. The siblings have been hearing tales about the Cities all their lives--humans are treated like animals, living in outdoor pens and forced to build new bots until they drop dead from exhaustion. Determined to find out if their parents are among the survivors, Nick, Kevin, and Cass venture into the heart of the City, but it is nothing like they've been told.

As they live among the bots for the first time, they realize they're fighting for more than just their family. The robots have ruled for too long, and now it's time for a revolution.

Terror in Paris
Clutch were playing the biggest shows of their career in Europe when terrorists attacked the Bataclan music venue in Paris, killing 90 people at an Eagles of Death Metal concert. “It definitely put things in a very odd and stressful light,” Fallon said. “Once we did Paris, it was a big relief to do that show and move forward.”
Fallon said he didn’t address the attacks on stage. “I wouldn’t know what the hell to say. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it,” he said. “A rock show is a sanctuary, and it was violated in the most atrocious way imaginable.”

Quick charge battery could charge smartphone 10 times faster - CSMonitor.com

The Chinese tech giant Huawei has revealed two new quick-charging battery prototypes that could change the future of smartphones.
Most current smartphone batteries that claim quick charging actually reduce the battery capacity and lifespan. Most iPhone users can attest to this reduction in battery capacity the more they use their phone. But Huawei has designed a battery with a graphite-coated anode that will remove the negative (no pun intended) side effects, effectively offering a quick-charging battery that doesn’t lose capacity or longevity.

Sleep paralysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sleep paralysis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sleep paralysis is a phenomenon in which a person either during falling asleep (hypnagogia) or awakening (hypnopompia), temporarily experiences an inability to move, speak, or react. It is a transitional state between wakefulness and sleep, characterized by muscle atonia (muscle weakness). It is often accompanied by terrifying hallucinations (such as an intruder in the room) to which one is unable to react due to paralysis, and physical experiences (such as strong current running through the upper body). One hypothesis is that it results from disrupted REM sleep, which normally induces complete muscle atonia to prevent sleepers from acting out their dreams. Sleep paralysis has been linked to disorders such as narcolepsymigrainesanxiety disorders, andobstructive sleep apnea; however, it can also occur in isolation.

Microsoft’s Surface team is working on a new premium smartphone, which will be ready in the second half of 2016. And it might be the pure Surface phone many have hoped for.

out the window?

out the window?

A. I came across such a sentence in a novel:

He looked out the window.

Shouldn't it be "He looked out of the window?" Is it fine to omit OF in the sentence? Is it commonly used in conversation?

Can I say," I walk out the door," or "She is falling out the tree?"
