Sammy Devil Jr. | VICE | United States

Sammy Devil Jr. | VICE | United States

If nobody else is willing to say this out loud, I’ll step up to the plate. Barack Obama is totally ripping off Sammy Davis Jr. I’m willing to overlook their general similarities (cross-racial appeal, Amazon brides, chain smoking), but the senator’s appropriation of Sammy’s mantra is what really gets my goat. What’s worse, this alleged master orator is actually guilty of motto misquoting.

Quite frankly, Obama’s “Yes, We Can” is a hackish catchphrase that invokes the empty sloganeering of the old politics he decries, and its bland meaninglessness makes a glut of unwatchable celebrity YouTube videos inevitable. But Sammy’s sublime ‘Yes, I Can” is a pledge that genuinely means something. “I Can” represents Davis’ refusal to recognize barriers, be they Jim Crow policies, societal norms, or sodomy laws. And “Yes” is basically what Sammy would say if anyone offered him anything.

All that Mr. Entertainment needed to partake in a new vice was an invitation. From clichéd descents into drug addiction to rebellious embraces of Republican politicians, he took everything to an obsessive extreme.

New 'phantom particle' discovered by Chinese scientists could mean you only need to charge your smartphone once a year | South China Morning Post

New 'phantom particle' discovered by Chinese scientists could mean you only need to charge your smartphone once a year | South China Morning Post

A research team in China claims to have caught a ghostly particle that has haunted and teased physicists for nearly a century.
The ground breaking discovery could boost the development of future technology such as quantum laptops faster than current super computers and smartphones that can last a year on one charge.
Led by professor Fang Zhong with the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Physics in Beijing, the team confirmed the existence of Weyl fermions after years of research, according to a statement on the academy’s website.
The Weyl fermion is a massless particle proposed in 1929 by mathematician and physicist Hermann Weyl. “You can imagine it as an extremely small magnetic bar, but with only one pole,” Dr Weng Hongming, a researcher involved in the project, told the South China Morning Post.
In nature, however small you cut a magnet, it retains north and south poles, the direction of the magnetic field which “flows” in or out at that point. With just one “pole” and no mass at all, the Weyl fermions can do many things impossible with current technology, Weng said.
This could have a dramatic effect on smartphones in particular, solving the problem of having to endless charge a device's battery.
While current gadgets are powered by the flow of electrons through wires and circuits, these particles are heavy and cumbersome to control, leading to loss of energy. If they were replaced by Weyl fermions, a "fermionic" device could have an almost lossless flow of energized current and make high power computations while consuming barely any energy.

The real reason North Korea has mandatory voting | Public Secrets

The real reason North Korea has mandatory voting | Public Secrets

You might think it’s because the world’s largest prison camp masquerading as a nation thinks this is genuine democracy: after all, even though there’s just one candidate (Party-approved, natch) for each post, you can still vote your disapproval by putting your ballot in another box for “no” votes. But nobody does that, probably because of the obvious wisdom of the Party’s choices, guided as they are by Juche spirit and the wisdom of Kim Jong Un.
You might also be a bit more cynical and think it’s so they can boast a 99.7 percent turnout to prove how enthusiastic the people are about their

People’s Democracy life in Hell.
But you’d be wrong. Per the CNN article, here’s the real reason the “mountain bandits” have compulsory voting:
The compulsory universal turnout, analysts and defectors say, serves another important purpose for the government.

The election acts as an unofficial census, allowing the government to discover who has defected or otherwise gone missing. And that spells big trouble, not only for the missing voter, but also for his or her family.
Get it? If you don’t vote, your family probably gets sent to Kim’s gulag.
President Obama, who has himself shown authoritarian tendencies, has expressed interest in mandatory voting.
Let’s not encourage him, okay? (1)

Another Day, Another Mammoth Failure for Obamacare | Somewhat Reasonable

Another Day, Another Mammoth Failure for Obamacare | Somewhat Reasonable

A new, national study is pointing to yet another instance in which the promised benefits of Obamacare have failed to materialize as forecast.
The report, published Monday in the professional medical journal theAnnals of Family Medicine, eyed how physicians have been transitioning to a system which focuses on improving patient health, as opposed to fighting disease.
Researchers “found pretty negligible differences” in physician performance in the new practice model per a survey of more than 600 U.S. medical practices, reports a Wonk Blogpost in The Washington Post
The study examined so-called Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), which were, in theory, supposed to be more effective than traditional medical practices, as they provided incentives for physicians to educate their patients as to how to cultivate a healthy lifestyle. ACOs were authorized under the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.
But the Obama theory of how doctors should work with patients clashed pretty harshly with reality in the field of medicine.
“Their first finding was a mess of inconsistencies in the way doctors are paid – a combination of salary, money from providing services, and quality,” the paper stated. “The break-down in pay for the 632 physician practices surveyed varied widely, regardless of whether the doctors worked in an accountable care organization or a more traditional practice. Second, the amount of income tied to the quality of the care they delivered was small – even if they worked at an accountable care organization that was working to drive down costs by improving patient care.”
Andrew Ryan, a health economist at the University of Michigan School of Public Health who headed the research sardonically commented: “I think it points to a potential problem: that these incentives aren’t getting translated to individual physicians.”

Bill Nye wants to label GMOs - Business Insider

But Nye doesn't think we should label GMOs as a warning.

Instead, he thinks we should do it as a marketing strategy.
Co-host Chuck Nice asked why corporations push back against labeling genetically modified produce, and Nye gave this response:
"I told those people at Monsanto ... I told them, why don’t you just put on there ‘proudly GMO?’ Go for it. ... Let the market sort it out."

My Way News - Medicaid enrollment surges, stirs worry about state budgets

ATLANTA (AP) — More than a dozen states that opted to expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act have seen enrollments surge way beyond projections, raising concerns that the added costs will strain their budgets when federal aid is scaled back starting in two years.

14 Facts the 'Women in Tech' Movement Doesn't Want You to Know

14 Facts the 'Women in Tech' Movement Doesn't Want You to Know

While women who got by with their looks will often embrace feminism when they lose those advantages and have to survive on merit, the women who have been talented all along don’t have time for your nonsense, and are going to tell you so. And you are going to be triggered.
Women who can in tech don’t need to get by on their gender, and they are often the first people to push social climbers and weak performers out so they don’t have to be judged by them. (That’s why women have a reputation for backstabbing at work: it’s the hard asses kicking out the dead wood.)
