Latin American Herald Tribune - Selig: The Promise of Colombia

Latin American Herald Tribune - Selig: The Promise of Colombia

Like all the countries I have visited, Colombia represents an economic success story and a valued economic partner to the United States. But Colombia may be the first country I have visited that seems to be looking into the very early moments of a prosperous future. There is such promise here.

A lot of that promise stems from the enormous economic growth this country has produced.

Colombia is now the third largest economy in all of Latin America, behind only Mexico and Brazil, who both happen to be members of the G20. Colombia officially started the process of accession into the OECD—securing its place among the most economically influential countries in the world. As a founding partner of the Pacific Alliance, Colombia helped complete a major milestone for that trade pact. The alliance summit back in February resulted in the elimination of more than 90% of tariffs between the four nations.

The cities of Bogota, Medellin, Barranquilla, Cali, and Cartagena used to carry a different connotation years ago. Today, these cities represent the five commercial hubs of the country. But this economic growth has also catalyzed an elevation in the day-to-day lives of its citizens. Over 3.5 million Colombians have been lifted from poverty. The country’s poverty rate has fallen by a full 10 points. And GDP per capita has more than tripled over the past twenty years.

Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies  (2014)

by Nick Bostrom

The human brain has some capabilities that the brains of other animals lack. It is to these distinctive capabilities that our species owes its dominant position. Other animals have stronger muscles or sharper claws, but we have cleverer brains.
If machine brains one day come to surpass human brains in general intelligence, then this new superintelligence could become very powerful. As the fate of the gorillas now depends more on us humans than on the gorillas themselves, so the fate of our species then would come to depend on the actions of the machine superintelligence.
But we have one advantage: we get to make the first move. Will it be possible to construct a seed AI or otherwise to engineer initial conditions so as to make an intelligence explosion survivable? How could one achieve a controlled detonation?
To get closer to an answer to this question, we must make our way through a fascinating landscape of topics and considerations. Read the book and learn about oracles, genies, singletons; about boxing methods, tripwires, and mind crime; about humanity’s cosmic endowment and differential technological development; indirect normativity, instrumental convergence, whole brain emulation and technology couplings; Malthusian economics and dystopian evolution; artificial intelligence, and biological

cognitive enhancement, and collective intelligence.
This profoundly ambitious and original book picks its way carefully through a vast tract of forbiddingly difficult intellectual terrain. Yet the writing is so lucid that it somehow makes it all seem easy. After an utterly engrossing journey that takes us to the frontiers of thinking about the human condition and the future of intelligent life, we find in Nick Bostrom’s work nothing less than a reconceptualization of the essential task of our time.

Metal Insider’s Top Five: Republican Rockers | Metal Insider - Part 7

Honorable Mention: Avenged Sevenfold
Avenged Sevenfold are proud Republicans, but as our buddy Axl Rosenberg from Metal Sucks proclaimed nearly five years ago, “They’re five wealthy kids from the OC. Of course they’re conservatives.” M. Shadows has said that the song “Blinded in Chains” from City of Evil is about the philosophical war between Republicans and Democrats, telling Newsday that while Republicans were “excessively close-minded,” that democrats are “a bunch of idiots where everyone looks at Michael Moore and does what he says.” They haven’t been outspoken about their politics in recent years.

SCOTUS To Hear New Obamacare Challenge - Matt Vespa

Obamacare is coming back to the Supreme Court. Today, the Court decided it would hear the new Obamacare challenge against health care subsidies that was originally argued in the D.C. Circuit Court Of Appeals last summer in Halbig v. Burwell.

Revolutionaries Who Fall Short | Nowtopian

It’s been a summer of reading (and walking, see photos!) for me, and now that autumn is here and the usual schedule of Shaping San Francisco Tours andTalks is starting, along with teaching weekly at the Art Institute, my time is shrinking. I still have a lot of time compared to most people so I’m not complaining (and I’m still reading a lot, but less). Anyway, this blog post is less of my writing and more from one of the books I read, which is a must-read for anyone still harboring fantasies that Fidel Castro is a great revolutionary.
I say this knowing that many people, even a fair number of friends, are ardent defenders of Castro, of the Cuban Revolution (which they unfortunately conflate), and the many movements that have claimed Castro as an inspiration or icon for their own efforts at “national liberation” (whether Chavez’s Bolivarian revolution in Venezuela, or the FMLN in El Salvador or the Sandinistas in Nicaragua). I am not attacking the people in these various places, not in Cuba or anywhere else, since it’s the rank and file activists who ultimately are the most betrayed by authoritarian party structures created by the various left-wing organizations in the name of revolution. Frequently, starting with Cuba, the argument is made that the United States directly or indirectly has forced these movements to become rigid top-down hierarchies, to center their organizations on a military logic, and to slavishly copy the worst of the old Soviet Union or Chinese Communist Party which in practical terms meant the brutal repression of all liberatory currents not under their tight control (in addition to the more obvious reactionary social groups that also exist in these countries).

Giant Robot Eagle Named as Secretary of Homeland Security | SatireV

Giant Robot Eagle Named as Secretary of Homeland Security | SatireV

In a surprise move, President Barack Obama has nominated a gigantic robotic bald eagle to Secretary of Homeland Security.
“I want you all to close your eyes for a second and imagine a repeat of Hurricane Sandy next year, a superstorm that destroys the lives of millions of Americans and inflicts billions of dollars of damage,” the President said in a press conference.  “Now picture this huge bad-ass bald eagle swooping down and dropping all kinds of awesome shit out of its humongous talons.  I’m talking food, potable water, medicine, rafts.  How cool would that be?”
In past days, the makeup of Obama’s new cabinet is becoming clearer.  Other nominees include Senator Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense and Senator John Kerry as Secretary of State.  Napolitano is considered a contender for the Attorney General slot.
When asked about the appointment of the mechanical avian rumored to be the size of a commuter jet, Napolitano supported the President’s decision. “You’ve got this giant bird, it’s got this awesome red white and blue belly that can open up to launch all sorts of drones and bombs, its feathers are made of the bones of our enemies—I mean, this thing is amazing.  I’m so proud to be part of an administration that embraces this kind of kick-ass technology.”
The eagle, which also has eyes that shoot lasers and an isatiable taste for Ben and Jerry’s Cherry Garcia ice cream, is expected to be approved by the Senate easily, due to wide bipartisan support.  Among the eagle’s most fervent supporters are conservatives concerned about illegal immigration.
“Are you kidding me?  Of course I like it,” said Arizona Senator Jeff Flake.  “Say you’ve got a bunch of illegal aliens trying to cross the border.  Boom!  Here comes the eagle.  It just picks them up and throws them back to Mexico.  No one's gonna mess with El Eagleo.”
Sources close to the eagle, which prefers to go by its given name, “Thomas Jefferson”, note that it is capable of being everywhere at all times, and that when it takes to the skies, all dangers facing America will instantly be turned into piles of ashes and dust.  Additionally, they report that Thomas Jefferson is honored to be nominated, and plans to have a very fruitful relationship with the President and the rest of the cabinet.

Flying Egyptians - Eden Saga

Flying Egyptians - Eden Saga

Last modified on 05/20/2014, 09:52 PM
Many flying objets were roaming in Egyptian skies

How can be explained the presence of the Serpent People in four different continents: in ancient Egypt, in pre-Celtic Ireland, inMesopotamia, in India and in Mesoamerica

Chrysolopea or Asian flying snakeThe flying snake is it a metaphor to describe astronauts godsThe theme of the feathered serpent -or flying snake- is universal. In various forms, it describes the former gods in many places of the world. In Monsoon Asia, this curious myth seems to be based on natural bases, since there is actually an air reptile over there.he Chrysolopea, flying snake, appears in the monsoon forests from Thailand to Indonesia, through Brunei, the Andaman Islands, Malaysia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Sri Lanka.
Egyptians inherited a part of Atlantis' spacecraft technology

All these strange gold jewelry come from tombs and Egyptian sarcophagi. Are they insects, birds or ... airplanes? This fascinating creature must have struck many imaginations! Is this the source of the nickname "flying snakes"? All conjectures are permitted...
The fact is that ancient iconography attests to the presence of numerous flying machines: the vimanas and pushpakas in ancient India, the aircraft of Solomon, the numerous descriptions and depictions of planes like the Egyptian jewelry opposite, the legends of flying carpets and antique saucers, etc.

The most ancient Egyptians enjoyed a developed technological civilization

Quetzalcoatl in his snake-shaped UFOIn the Bible, we find other evidence of flying machines, like giant wheels or other celestial chariots. Thus, in the book of Enoch, who was unjustly removed from the Bible as the Torah, the prophet Enoch demonstrates the existence of flying chariots in which God takes him to visit other worlds far into the sky.The prophet Ezekiel in turn saw a large celestial wheel, resembling a space station or a mother ship, with smaller wheels, perhaps flying saucers hovering above him in the air.

Sans compter les illustrations, peintures et dessins d'auteurs modernes, comme celle-ci

But the most striking ones are the kinds of UFOs whose interior is shaped like a snake, or rather an Ouroboros, this primordial snakebiting its tail. In these old-style UFOs, a god sat and operated buttons and levers. He is found in China, in Vedic India, in predynastic Egypt and in Ancient America. In Mesoamerica the flying snake is a representation of god Quetzalcoatl, According to legend, this god came from East on a rowing boat and returned to East on a raft of snakes.

Omec sculpture from La Venta, Mexico and Buddhist painting from Burma, Myanmar

Note that Quetzalcoatl, Prince of the Snake People, brought craft, science, agriculture and abundance to the local populations. In Egypt, the god who is represented by the same flying snake is also a benevolent God, bringing abundance.

The Egyptian god Hapi, the Nile, in his flying snake. Photo of Pierre-Louis ViolletThis is Hapy, or Hapi, god of the Nile, whose annual floods fill the granaries. Hapi is a strange god, a hermaphrodite and nurturing god. His breasts make him look like Isis of Anatolia whom we will talk aboutelsewhere. Could it be that the former gods, as Hapi, have had both sexes?
That would give an interesting perspective to the myth of the creation of Eve andPandora, which indeed show that woman was created after man.

Humana Aetna and BCBSTX are canceling plans but this year it’s MUCH different. | C. Steven Tucker.WordPress.com

Humana Aetna and BCBSTX are canceling plans but this year it’s MUCH different. | C. Steven Tucker.WordPress.com

On October 2nd President Obama touted an “improved, strong U.S. economy” and the “benefits of Obamacare” at Northwestern University. It all sounded great but this is what I’ve been dealing with today. I’m fielding angry calls from my HumanaOne, Aetna and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas clients. All of their policies will be canceled  as of December 31, 2014. See the letters hereand here. This is the second year I’ve had to deal with this but this year it’s muchdifferent.
Last year when more than 4 million cancellation notices went out, Americans were able to shop for prices as early as October 1stgranted the initial roll out left much to be desired. In fact, in my opinion it was an unmitigated disaster. Many of my clients spent hours on the phone with Healthcare.gov ‘navigators’ only to find out that their application had then mysteriously disappeared.
Worse yet, because our state’s “C.H.I.P” program was expanded long before Obamacare. The few members of my clientele who actually qualified for an APTC – “Advance Premium Tax Credit”  a.k.a. “subsidy” to artificially lower their premiums were unable to add their children to their subsidized policies. They were instead instructed to enroll their children in Medicaid. Or, they could pay full price for each of their children. The rates for a single child in my state are at least $100 a month for the cheapest “Bronze” plan which includes a $6,000 deductible per person. That’s not exactly ‘affordable care’ when you have three children.
This year, for the first time in 20 years I can not even quote a replacement product because Barack Obama has issued a GAG ORDER to the health insurance industry instructing them not to disclose their January 2015 health insurance rates until after the mid-term elections. This is unprecedented. Normally health insurance premiums are released for public viewing 60 days before the January 1st effective date. Where are the reports on these cancellations and the gag order from NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN? The only news organization that I am aware of that has reported on any of this is the Fox News channel. I can guarantee you one thing, not one of my clients who received a cancellation notice is voting Democrat on Tuesday.
Republicans have outstanding alternatives to this disastrous health care law. The two most recent are the American Health Care Reform Act and the Universal Exchange Plan. Please read them, for it will be up to us to forge a new path forward for the American people and time is of the essence. The insurance company bail outs are temporary and they will expire in 2016. Without a bailout the health insurance industry will pull out of the individual and family health insurance market. Before that happens we need to be able to articulate intelligent, market based alternatives. It’s up to us.

Research on 'Interstellar' leads to black hole breakthrough | Digital Trends

The special effects team working on Interstellar no doubt wanted to make a great movie first and foremost, but such is the computing power at Hollywood’s disposal that they’ve ended up advancing our knowledge of black holes at the same time. In the process of crunching through 800TB of data, the film’s effects unit was able to visualize these phenomena in ways that have never been seen before.
As Wired reports, at the center of these breakthroughs was astrophysicist Kip Thorne, acting as an advisor to director Christopher Nolan. Renderings of “unprecedented accuracy” were generated from Thorne’s notes and equations, renderings that created a glowing halo effect rather than the conventional rings that the scientists had expected to see appearing.
Thanks to these highly complex computer-generated effects — some single frames took as much as 100 hours to render — Thorne was able to see the effects of a black hole on the surrounding space in ways that hadn’t been understood before. He says he’s in the process of publishing two articles based on the findings of Interstellar and the Double Negative special effects staff, who wrote a completely new rendering program for the project.
“I never expected that,” Thorne told Wired. “[CGI supervisor] Eugénie just did the simulations and said, ‘Hey, this is what I got.’ It was just amazing. This is our observational data, that’s the way nature behaves. Period.” Interstellar opens on November 7 and stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn and Michael Caine in an intergalactic race against time to save mankind from extinction.

The United States is devoting billions of dollars to compete with Russia militarily, but maybe we should try to compete educationally. Russia now has the largest percentage of adults with a university education of any industrialized country — a position once held by the United States, although we’re plunging in that roster.
