Learned helplessness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Learned helplessness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Learned helplessness is the condition of a human or non-human animal that has learned to behave helplessly, failing to respond even though there are opportunities for it to help itself by avoiding unpleasant circumstances or by gaining positive rewards. Learned helplessness theory is the view that clinical depression and related mental illnesses may result from a perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation.[1] Organisms that have been ineffective and less sensitive in determining the consequences of their behaviour are defined as having acquired Learned Helplessness.[2]

Raising the Minimum Wage Also Raises Unemployment

Raising the Minimum Wage Also Raises Unemployment: The president made the case during his most recent State of the Union address that the way to prosperity was to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour by 2015, from $7.25, where it has been since 2009. The rationale is that raising the minimum wage would help the middle class and businesses alike.

If that were the case, how do we explain the fact that since the federal minimum wage was instituted in 1938, it has been raised 22 times? If it did what it was supposed to do, there would be no reason to adjust it.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: By day 17, the situation has become so dire that Congress, resorting to desperate measures, decides to actually do something. It passes, and the president signs, a law raising the debt ceiling, thereby ensuring that the federal government can continue spending spectacular quantities of money that it does not have until the next major totally unforeseeable government financial crisis, scheduled for February 2014.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: … the federal government, in an unthinkable development that we cannot even think about, partially shuts down. The result is a catastrophe of near-sequester proportions. Within hours wolves are roaming the streets of major U.S. cities, and bacteria the size of mature salmon are openly cavorting in the nation’s water supply. In the Midwest, thousands of cows, no longer supervised by the Department of Agriculture, spontaneously explode. Yellowstone National Park — ALL of it — is stolen. In some areas gravity stops working altogether, forcing people to tie themselves to trees so they won’t float away. With the nation virtually defenseless, the Bermudan army invades the East Coast, within hours capturing Delaware and most of New Jersey.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: another crisis in the form of a “sequester” that will happen automatically unless Congress can agree on a budget, which seems unlikely inasmuch as Congress cannot agree on what planet this is. If the sequester goes into effect, federal spending will continue to rise, but not quite as fast as it would have risen without the sequester. To a normal human, this means government spending is still increasing, but to Washington, the sequester means “draconian cuts” and is a looming disaster of epic proportions. Panic grips the city, as grim-faced former student council presidents write talking points far into the night.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: At the last minute, congressional leaders and the White House reach an agreement under which the government will be able to continue spending spectacular quantities of money that it does not have, thus temporarily averting the very real looming danger that somebody might have to make a decision.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: This particular crisis is a “fiscal cliff” caused by the fact that for years the government has been spending spectacular quantities of money that it does not have, which has resulted in a mess that nobody could possibly have foreseen unless that person had a higher level of financial awareness than a cucumber.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: Unfortunately, before they could get the darned thing fixed, the administration had to pivot back to yet another zombie issue, health care, because it turned out that Obamacare, despite all the massive brainpower behind it, had some “glitches,” in the same sense that the universe has some “atoms.”

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: And for approximately the 250th time, the Obama administration pivoted back to the economy, which has somehow been recovering for years now without actually getting any better.

Perspective: U.S. Has the Highest Corporate Tax Rate in the World - Kevin Glass: The corporate tax rate is the worst tax in the entire tax code. It stifles growth and innovation and does little to combat inequality. It's taken out of the paychecks of workers and investors, not CEOs or profits.

In a just world, America's corporate tax code would have fallen faster than Western Europe's. There is much work to be done.

Karma, Self-determination and Free WillKarma: this frequently heard word has entered most Western languages including English. The word karma comes from the Sanskrit root kri meaning “to do.” Karma translated is action, plain and simple, whether involuntary or voluntary, although as a religious term, karma often refers to intentional (usually moral) actions that affect our condition (or level of existence) in this life and the next.

Judge blasts Obama governance by ‘secret law’ | Fox News

Judge blasts Obama governance by ‘secret law’ | Fox News: PODESTA PAYOLA: BLURRED LINES - The buck raking of new White House adviser John Podesta may prove a problem for the man who is supposed to be turning the Obama presidency around. Longtime Clinton retainer and uber-influence peddler Podesta’s Center for American Progress disclosed its corporate donors, revealing a substantial overlap with the clients of the lobbying firm he founded with his brother Tony. Washington Free Beacon’s Lachlan Markay points out that 12 of the corporate donors to the liberal think tank were also clients of the lobbying firm. “It is not known how much these corporations collectively donated to CAP. However, they paid the Podesta Group more than $5.8 million for lobbying services, according to disclosure forms, during the years in which they were also contributing to CAP.” The ethics worry: Podesta’s lines were blurry enough as an unofficial White House adviser. Now that he’s officially on the team, what kind of cash will corporations be expected to pony up for access. And what will that cash buy?

Judge blasts Obama governance by ‘secret law’ | Fox News: CHRISTMAS CREEPERS FOR OBAMACARE - President Obama’s Twitter account offered up a picture of a grown man wearing children’s zip-up Christmas pajamas and cradling a cup of hot coco. Odd, right? The goal is to remind Obama’s volunteer corps to use the holiday season to urge family and friends to enroll in ObamaCare. Does the ironic infantilizing of adults sell insurance? Would you take advice on a financial decision from a man who dresses up like a child for Christmas? Buzzfeed’s McKay Coppins takes a look at the very strange efforts on the left and right to generate online attention surrounding ObamaCare.

[Ed. note: But do they have feet? Adult footie pajamas for ObamaCare would definitely be a big seller at the OFA store!]

Judge blasts Obama governance by ‘secret law’ | Fox News: 'THE BILL IS PASSED.' - With more polls suggesting President Obama is losing his clout on managing the economy, Speaker John Boehner is touting House-passed bills to boost the economy. In a Web video released this morning, Boehner blasts Senate Democrats for refusing to take up the bills, but lays the blame squarely on Obama. After a montage of bills coming to final passage in the House, Boehner says to the camera, “Mr. President, what are you waiting for?”

Judge blasts Obama governance by ‘secret law’ | Fox News: SESSIONS BLOCKED IN BID TO SPARE MILITARY PENSIONS - A last-ditch effort by Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., to stave off cuts to military benefits in the bipartisan budget deal was not able to overcome a Democrat blockade Tuesday. The Alabama senator’s plan called for an elimination of an estimated $4.2 billion in annual spending by reining in an IRS credit claimed by illegal immigrants. Session blasted Democrats after the vote saying, “By blocking my amendment, they voted to cut pensions for wounded warriors.” Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. went further saying, “Nobody wants to shut down the government, but here's the question: Is the choice between keeping the government open and screwing all the military retirees, is that the right choice?” While the budget vote was much closer than the House vote, 12 Republicans voted to advance the bill Tuesday. Majority Leader Harry Reid could push the measure to final passage as soon as today. Fox News has more.
