100 Unintended Consequences of Obamacare | National Review Online: Companies, workers, retirees, students, and spouses all suffer from the law’s inflexible mandates.

Commentary: Obamacare, Debt and Disaster | The National Interest

Commentary: Obamacare, Debt and Disaster | The National Interest: This summer, a disagreement over the level of funding for government agencies left lawmakers in both chambers all but resigned to the fact that the appropriations process would be stalled. Instead of passing 12 individual spending bills as the appropriations process calls for, lawmakers focused on passing a continuing resolution by September 30. When that did not happen, the federal government went into a partial shutdown.

The Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, is at the core of the budget disagreement that led to the appropriations-funding lapse. The way in which President Obama and Senate Democrats rammed through the law—without popular or even bipartisan support—inadvertently set the stage for a funding challenge down the road. Since the law’s passage, it has grown even more unpopular, as its damaging side effects—ranging from higher premiums, to new and higher taxes, to loss of employer-provided health coverage and full-time work hours—have kicked in.

Proponents of Raising the Debt Ceiling Want To Bankrupt Your Kids - Hit & Run : Reason.com

Proponents of Raising the Debt Ceiling Want To Bankrupt Your Kids - Hit & Run : Reason.com: Whether it's long-term or short-term, proposals to hike the debt ceiling are schemes for allowing the federal government to borrow more money so it can continue to spend beyond its means. Politicians want to borrow more money because they have spending plans that consistently exceed the amount of money that the federal government takes in as taxes, and that are projected to continue to outpace revenues into the foreseeable future. Raising the debt ceiling means snowballing debt rolling downhill right toward our children and their children.

House GOP Blinks: Will Lift Debt AND Reopen Government: House Republicans have sent the White House a revised proposal to lift the debt ceiling for six weeks, as well as reopen government through December 15th, which was their original spending proposal before the partial shutdown. The revised GOP plan reflects the demands Obama made in a meeting with House GOP Leaders on Thursday. It also reflects the unwillingness of the DC GOP to face a fiscal showdown with Democrats.

Ben Carson: Obamacare worst thing to happen to the U.S. since slavery - Washington Times

Dr. Ben Carson didn’t mince words: Obamacare is “the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.”
Dr. Carson made the declaration about President Obama’s sweeping health care mandate Friday during a speech at the Values Voter Summit.

“It is slavery because it aims to make all of us subservient to the government,” he said. “It was never about health care. It was about control.”

Dr. Carson further compared the new health care reform to policies envisioned by Vladimir Lenin, one of the fathers of socialism and communism.

“Socialized medicine is the keystone in the establishment of a socialist state,” Dr. Carson told the audience of some 2,000 supporters of traditional values.

Such a comment may seem paranoid to some, he said, “but I would say if you know anything about history, how could you not bring it up?”

When people in the executive and legislative branch don’t have to participate, but everybody else has to, “that’s not America, that’s Russia,” he added.

The Ted Cruz, Van Jones Face-Off You’ve Been Waiting for: ‘Van, I Know You Desperately Want to Change the Topic From Obamacare…’ | Video | TheBlaze.com: Chuckling at Jones’s premise, Cruz responded: “Van, I know you desperately want to change the topic from Obamacare.”

“Democrats in this town do not want to discuss Obamacare,” the Texas Republican explained. “Why? Because it isn’t working.”

Cruz then argued that it’s not just Republicans who are polling poorly, pointing out that President Barack Obama’s approval rating has fallen to 37 percent and Democrats have the lowest support among the middle class they’ve had the 40 years of polling.

That’s because the Democrats have refused to negotiate in regards to the debt ceiling and the federal budget, turning down GOP proposals to fund vital parts of the government during the shutdown, Cruz said. Obama and the Democrats are also losing support because millions of Americans don’t want Obamacare, he added.

No, this isn’t an anti-immigration screed; it’s a commentary on the inability of a political community of 313 million individuals to engage in limited self-government without the limiting principle of subsidiarity. The government shutdown is a symptom of the American abandonment of the robust federalism that was initially embedded in our Constitution. I contend that the acrimonious debates in Congress are the fruit of a political community that is too big, where the citizenry is no longer united by the common bonds that should naturally arise within a healthy polis.

Teen faces felony charges for possessing tackle box

Public school policies designed to keep weapons off campus have expanded so grotesquely students are now being punished for the most innocuous reasons imaginable. For example, 17-year-old Cody Chitwood could face a 10-year prison term and $10,000 in fines for keeping a tackle box in his car.
Although some of the contents could, like almost anything, be used as a weapon, the prospective U.S. airman didn’t bring any of the fishing supplies with him from his vehicle. Chitwood, a senior at Cobb County High School in Georgia, is simply a fishing enthusiast.

Premium Increases for “Young Invincibles” Under the ACA and the Impending Premium Spiral | Research | American Action Forum

Premium Increases for “Young Invincibles” Under the ACA and the Impending Premium Spiral | Research | American Action Forum: Crucial to the success of the Affordable Care Act's (ACA) health insurance exchanges is the participation of 2.7 million uninsured 18-35 year olds, sometimes referred to as the “young invincibles.” With lower than average incomes and generally good health, “young invincibles” are more likely to forego health coverage than others, or be attracted to plans offering basic coverage at minimal prices. Due to the ACA’s sweeping market reforms, rates for low-premium plans have increased exponentially between 2013 and 2014. In fact, on average, a healthy 30 year old male nonsmoker will see his lowest cost insurance option increase 260 percent.

18-35 year olds typically utilize fewer health care services then other populations, and as such, their premiums are needed to subsidize the costs of caring for more expensive enrollees. The administration admits that without these “young invincibles” the exchanges may well fail. However, unreasonable premium increases and an ineffectual subsidy-penalty system appear likely to discourage young people from signing up, threatening the stability of the insurance market.

Very different things I hope you’ll agree.
