Frost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Frost - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Hoar frost (also called radiation frost or hoarfrost or pruina) refers to the white ice crystals, loosely deposited on the ground or exposed objects, that form on cold clear nights when heat is lost into the open sky causing objects to become colder than the surrounding air. A related effect is flood frost or frost pocket[2] which occurs when air cooled by ground-level radiation losses travels downhill to form pockets of very cold air in depressions, valleys, and hollows. Hoar frost can form in these areas even when the air temperature a few feet above ground is well above freezing. Nonetheless, the frost itself will be at or below the freezing temperature of water.

Here's Why Obamacare Opponents are Pushing for Delay - Hit & Run : Reason.com: The mention of the law’s widely disliked individual mandate may get some attention, but it’s the insurance subsidies that matter most. Once those tax credits start being doled out to middle income individuals and families—people up to 400 percent of the poverty line, or about $90,000 for a family of four, are eligible—the law, and its spending, will become extremely difficult to repeal. The policy goal here is largely to delay the law’s spending.

Krauthammer's Take: Obama 'Wants to Pretend He's Always' Made Al-Qaeda Distinction | National Review Online: “I think Obama is required to attempt this phony distinction, because last year in the election race he made no distinction,” Krauthammer said on Special Report this evening. “It’s a distinction he wants to make, and he wants to pretend he’s always been making it.”

Krauthammer explained that the White House’s reluctance to label last year’s attacks on an American diplomatic facility in Benghazi as coming from an al-Qaeda would have meant negating the campaign-trail narrative. “It was a distinction they only used after an election as a way to cover up a cover-up that happened before the election,” he said.

Office of the Governor Rick Perry - [Press Release] Statement by Gov. Rick Perry on Secretary Sebelius’ Visit to Texas: Gov. Rick Perry today issued the following statement on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' Obamacare tour in Texas:

"Today, Secretary Sebelius is back in Texas to again explain the increasingly-convoluted, and increasingly-delayed, implementation of the federal exchange system. With due respect, the secretary and our president are missing the point: It's not that Americans don't understand Obamacare, it's that we understand it all too well. In Texas, we've been fighting Obamacare from the beginning, refusing to expand a broken Medicaid system and declining to set up a state health insurance exchange. We took these steps to minimize the damage Obamacare will cause to our economy and state budget, although we're all too aware Obamacare will still cause our state immense budgetary challenges in the years ahead, just like it will to families and small businesses across our country."

TWST: What are some of your favorite stock picks right now?
Mr. Glynn: I am always reluctant to pick our favorite company.
Most of our focus is on small and medium-sized companies. We do have a
couple of large companies that we think highly of. Amazon (AMZN) is certainly one of them. Their Amazon
Web Services business for allowing companies to develop infrastructure
by outsourcing it and putting it on the AWS platform is important.

We like ServiceNow (NOW). We like a company that went public late last year, Workday
(WDAY), in the human resource and financial accounting areas. Those are
some of the companies that we feel very good about. We concentrate our
assets in roughly 25 companies, and position ourselves as long-term
investors. We are constantly trying to build positions into meaningful components of our portfolio, and sometimes we have to trim back when some of our companies run up in valuation.

TWST: What is your exit strategy?

Mr. Glynn: Primarily, it would be one of two things. When we
see that a company has achieved a market position and valuation that
reflects its underlying fundamentals and its growth rate slows.
Sometimes we feel we lose our particular value-added on a company when
it becomes too broadly owned by the institutional world. Sometimes we
make mistakes, and we have to overlay our intellectual honesty to
realize that our assumptions behind our investment decision are not
valid, are not working out, and we have to trim back positions.

TWST: Are there any recent examples you could share?

Mr. Glynn: I would say companies this year, particularly through the April period, ran up a lot in price, and some of them got...

How not to get people into jobs - Opinion - www.theage.com.au: The work-for-the-dole scheme is not intended to get people working. It never was, writes Simon Castles.

It was recently announced that the work-for-the-dole scheme would widen this year to include drug addicts and the homeless. You don't hear much about the scheme these days, but there it is, still running. It remains the Federal Government's major response to youth and long-term unemployment - the flagship of their mutual obligation policy.

So why do I hate it as much now as I did when it was introduced, nearly eight years ago? Let me count the ways.

The Tragedy of America's Great Food Stamp Binge - Fox Nation

The Tragedy of America's Great Food Stamp Binge - Fox Nation
Let me put it this way, my jaw hit the floor. Earlier this week I was able to screen a portion of this Friday’s Fox News documentary “The Great Food Stamp Binge,” hosted by Bret Baier. It airs Friday at 10 p.m. and Sunday at 9 p.m. ET on the Fox News Channel. This investigation focuses on a federal program called SNAP, or "Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program."
Once upon a time this was called food stamps, but the modern world is all about branding and image, not accuracy or substance.  Thus, a snappy new name was needed.
All this change is a direct result of the Obama administration's surreptitious undermining of the law in the Stimulus Act in 2009 and the disingenuous gutting of President Clinton's overwhelmingly successful Welfare Reform law. This was achieved by administrative fiat in 2010.
As I watched the rough cut with Fox Editor-at-Large Peter Boyer, I found myself at a loss for words.
I don’t know whether I was more saddened, or angered by the interview John Roberts did with an apparently healthy “surfer” who happily lives a life of leisure in Southern California subsidized by the taxpayer.
It was simply mindboggling to listen to this grown man explain the logic he uses to justify taking food aid -- and thus free food -- rather than working and paying for it himself.

Le génie du mal - Wikipedia

Le génie du mal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Le génie du mal (installed 1848) or The Genius of Evil, known informally in English as Lucifer or The Lucifer of Liège,[1] is a religious sculpture executed in white marble by the Belgian artist Guillaume Geefs. Francophone art historians most often refer to the figure as an ange déchu, a "fallen angel." It is located within the elaborate pulpit (French chaire de vérité, "seat of truth") of St. Paul's Cathedral, Liège, and depicts a classically beautiful man in his physical prime, chained, seated, and nearly nude but for drapery gathered over his thighs, his full length ensconced within a mandorla of bat wings. Geefs' work replaces an earlier sculpture created for the space by his younger brother Joseph Geefs, which was removed from the cathedral because of its distracting allure and "unhealthy beauty."[2]

Family insurance in jeopardy at small companies - Houston Chronicle

Family insurance in jeopardy at small companies - Houston Chronicle: NEW YORK (AP) — One casualty of the new health care law may be paid coverage for families of people who work for small businesses.

Insurance companies have already warned small business customers that premiums could rise 20 percent or more in 2014 under the Affordable Care Act. That's making some owners consider not paying for coverage for workers' families, even though insurance is a benefit that helps companies attract and retain top talent. If more small business owners decide to stop paying for family coverage, it will accelerate a trend that started as the cost of health insurance soared in recent years.

The History of Scottish Shortbread.: Scottish cookery has always differed from culinary endeavours south of the Border. The Romans influenced English cooking but as they did not venture far into Scotland, historically Scottish cuisine developed slowly. Scottish cooking methods advanced through the influence of the French at the court of Mary Queen of Scots and later through the elaborate dishes served to English lords with Scottish estates. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert acquired Balmoral in the 19th century and whilst they brought with them the rich food of the English court, they also liked to serve traditional Scottish dishes to important visitors.

Judge must serve 28 years

Judge must serve 28 years: Judge Mark A. Ciavarella, 63, serves as an example of why the private prison industry can do more harm than good. Ciavarella worked alongside owners of private juvenile facilities to ensure that the prison remained occupied. The more prisoners equated to more profits for the owners of the prison.

As a result, Ciavarella would sentence offenders with small offenses to months and, at times, years behind bars. He once sentenced a teen to three months in jail for creating a MySpace page that mocked her school’s assistant principal. Ciavarella also sentenced another teen to 90 days in jail after a simple schoolyard fight.

But after a federal investigation, it was discovered that Ciavarella and his colleague, Judge Michael Conahan, received more than $2.6 million from privately run youth centers owned by PA Child Care. In 2011, Ciavarella was convicted of racketeering and sentenced to 28 years in prison. He was also forced to pay $1 million in restitution.

Once Ciavarella was convicted, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court tossed out 4,000 convictions issued by the judge.

Ciavarella appealed to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in Philadelphia to have his 28-year sentence overturned. On July 25, the court denied his request.

Ciavarella’s attorneys may attempt to appeal the case before the U.S. Supreme Court.

Matthew 8 - Matthew Henry’s Commentary - Bible Commentary

Matthew 8 - Matthew Henry’s Commentary - Bible Commentary

Commentary on Matthew 8:18-22

One of the scribes was too hasty in promising; he proffers himself to be a close follower of Christ. He seems to be very resolute. Many resolutions for religion are produced by sudden conviction, and taken up without due consideration; these come to nothing. When this scribe offered to follow Christ, one would think he should have been encouraged; one scribe might do more credit and service than twelve fishermen; but Christ saw his heart, and answered to its thoughts, and therein teaches all how to come to Christ. His resolve seems to have been from a worldly, covetous principle; but Christ had not a place to lay his head on, and if he follows him, he must not expect to fare better than he fared. We have reason to think this scribe went away. Another was too slow. Delay in doing is as bad on the one hand, as hastiness in resolving is on the other. He asked leave to attend his father to his grave, and then he would be at Christ's service. This seemed reasonable, yet it was not right. He had not true zeal for the work. Burying the dead, especially a dead father, is a good work, but it is not thy work at this time. If Christ requires our service, affection even for the nearest and dearest relatives, and for things otherwise our duty, must give way. An unwilling mind never wants an excuse. Jesus said to him, Follow me; and, no doubt, power went with this word to him as to others; he did follow Christ, and cleaved to him. The scribe said, I will follow thee; to this man Christ said, Follow me; comparing them together, it shows that we are brought to Christ by the force of his call to us, Romans 9:16.

Hypocrisy Or Ignorance- A Theosophical Article by William Q. Judge

Hypocrisy Or Ignorance- A Theosophical Article by William Q. Judge: There are some members of the Theosophical Society who expose themselves to the charges of indulging in hypocrisy or being ignorant about their own failings and shortcomings. They are those who, having studied the literature of the movement and accepted most of its doctrines, then talk either to fellow-members or to outsiders as if the goal of reunification and universal knowledge had been reached in their case, when a very slight observation reveals them as quite ordinary human beings.

If one accepts the doctrine of Universal Brotherhood, which is based on the essential unity of all human beings, there is a long distance yet intervening between that acceptation and its realization, even in those who have adopted the doctrine. It is just the difference between intellectual assent to a moral, philosophical, or occult law, and its perfect development in one's being so that it has become an actual part of ourselves. So when we hear a theosophist say that he could see his children, wife, or parents die and not feel anything whatever, we must infer that there is a hypocritical pretension or very great ignorance. There is one other conclusion left, which is that we have before us a monster who is incapable of any feeling whatever, selfishness being over-dominant.

In 1980 and 1981 the Zimbabwean economy showed strong growth of the GDP with 10.6% and 12.5%. From 1982–1989 economic growth averaged just 2.7% (1980–1989 average 4.47%).
