Articles: Let Us Now Praise Knowing Stuff: A reporter asked me, "Would you prefer that students know information, or how to find information?"

Clearly she thought that knowing where to find information was best. Actually knowing facts was, in her mind, not important. That was the old way, the medieval approach, when children were whipped to make them memorize the state capitals and other such irrelevant stuff.

Thank goodness, she clearly believed, we have moved on to more civilized ways. Children no longer know anything. All they know is that they must go somewhere to find what they want to know.

People Not In Labor Force Soar By 663,000 To 90 Million, Labor Force Participation Rate At 1979 Levels | Zero Hedge

Things just keep getting worse for the American worker, and by implication US economy, where as we have shown many times before, it pays just as well to sit back and collect disability and various welfare and entitlement checks, than to work .The best manifestation of this: the number of people not in the labor force which in March soared by a massive 663,000 to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer even looking for work. This was the biggest monthly increase in people dropping out of the labor force since January 2012, when the BLS did its census recast of the labor numbers. And even worse, the labor force participation rate plunged from an already abysmal 63.5% to 63.3% - the lowest since 1979! But at least it helped with the now painfully grotesque propaganda that the US unemployment rate is "improving."

Young Music Fans Now Listen to Streaming Services as Often as AM/FM Radio | MetalSucks

Young Music Fans Now Listen to Streaming Services as Often as AM/FM Radio | MetalSucks

The streaming revolution is about to overtake radio, and the results
ain’t gonna be pretty as the oldsters at the major labels try to hold
onto yesteryear. According to The NPD Group [via Deadline],
a Q4 2012 survey showed that streaming services accounted for about as
much weekly music listening time among 13-to-35 year olds than AM/FM
terrestrial radio, a new milestone.

Streaming services accounted for roughly 23% of weekly listening time
(up from 17% in 2011) while AM/FM radio accounted for 24% (down from
26% in 2011), a near statistical dead heat. NPD’s Russ Crupnick credits
the proliferation of mobile streaming options for the growth. Older
music listeners unsurprisingly still prefer radio.

Pandora, the most popular streaming service, is used by 39% of the
13-35 year olds surveyed, followed by Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio (11%),
the free version of Spotify (9%), Grooveshark (3%), Slacker (2%),
Pandora One (2%), TuneIn (2%), Last.fm (2%), and Xbox Music (2%).

This news shouldn’t effect you and me very much; metal, of course, is
rarely played on the radio anyway. If anything, this shift should
benefit the metal industry by helping fans more easily access and
discover the music they want to hear. But it does pose a problem for the
major labels that are used to achieving mainstream success through
tightly-controlled radio playlists based on decades of leveraged
relationships. We’ll see what happens; it’ll definitely be interesting.

High-Skilled Visas: Another Reminder of Needed Reform

High-Skilled Visas: Another Reminder of Needed Reform: The fate of many high-skilled workers seeking to come and work in the U.S. may be left up to luck of the draw this year.

On Monday, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) began accepting applications for a popular high-skilled worker visa, known as the H-1B. By Friday, the agency warns they may already have more applicants than they have available visas. If that happens, USCIS will stop accepting applications then and there. The agency will then use a lottery system to randomly select who will receive each one of the 65,000 available visas.

Executive Order Banning Guns Prohibited by…Obamacare?

Executive Order Banning Guns Prohibited by…Obamacare?

Many on the right have been focusing on a provision hidden deep within the 2,800 page Obamacare legislation that prohibits the Feds from regulating guns and ammo and collecting data on legal gun-owners. CNN called it a “gift to the nation’s powerful gun lobby.” But does it really prohibit Obama from issuing a sweeping executive order banning guns?
There is a small provision in Obamacare entitled, “Protection of Second Amendment Rights” in Section 2716, part c. In fact, it was included courtesy of Harry “NRA” Reid. It was his way of preventing the NRA, one of his big contributors, from fighting Obamacare, which they threatened to do unless they got a provision in it that they could brag about to their members. Here’s what that section says:

Missouri Town Once Declared 60% “Blighted” Votes to Ban Eminent Domain for Private Gain | The Institute for Justice: Residents in Columbia, Mo., overwhelmingly voted this week to amend the city’s charter to restrict the use of eminent domain. Passing with almost 70 percent approval, Proposition 1 “prohibit[s] the City from using eminent domain to acquire property for economic development.” The amendment also ensures that designating someone’s property as “blighted” will not trigger eminent domain. Like constitutional amendments, Proposition 1 can now only be overturned by a future ballot initiative.

10 Grammatical Mistakes You Can Avoid When Speaking Spanish: Ending a sentence in a preposition. Although some purists object, it's quite common to end sentences in English with prepositions. But it's a no-no in Spanish, so you'll need to recast the sentence to make sure the preposition's object comes after the preposition. Correct: ¿Con quién puedo comer? (Whom can I eat with?)

New EPA Regulations Mean Higher Gas Prices: It’s no secret that the White House, regardless of Administration, releases unpopular news on Friday afternoons. On the popular television drama West Wing, the fictional Bartlett Administration calls it “Take out the trash day.” We shouldn’t be too surprised that the Obama Administration released Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations that will increase the price at the pump on Good Friday.

IRS knowingly sends Billions in Fraudulent Refunds to Illegal Immigrants - Bob Beauprez - Townhall Finance Conservative Columnists and Financial Commentary

IRS knowingly sends Billions in Fraudulent Refunds to Illegal Immigrants - Bob Beauprez - Townhall Finance Conservative Columnists and Financial Commentary: A WTHR-TV Indianapolis investigative report exposes a fraudulent scheme wherein the IRS is sending $4.2 billion per year to illegal immigrants as an "additional child tax credit" for children who don't even live in the U.S.

Further, the IRS and Congress have been ignoring the scheme for years. The Inspector General's office has repeatedly identified the problem in audit after audit. The IG, Russell George says, "The magnitude of the problem has grown exponentially," but the IRS is doing nothing to stop it.

"It's so easy it's ridiculous," the tax preparer whistleblower who exposed the fraud admits. Names are simply listed on the IRS form. "The more you put on there, the more you get back." No questions asked…the check's in the mail.

By building “fairy circles,” termites engineer their own ecosystem | Ars Technica

By building “fairy circles,” termites engineer their own ecosystem | Ars Technica: In essence, the termites are cultivating their own constant sources of water and food by creating and maintaining these circles. It’s a complicated phenomenon, and, more than likely, there’s no actual consciousness or planning involved on the part of the termites; they are just instinctually performing tasks that have been etched into their DNA over millions of years. However, the end result of the insects' behavior is a massive change in their habitat, a process that scientists call “ecosystem engineering.” Just like beavers, sand termites are altering the entire landscape for their own benefit. And, indirectly, they are also helping other species, since fairy circles have been found to increase biodiversity: a disproportionately large number of insects, reptiles, plants, and small mammals are found in and around the circles.
