Collective unconscious - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collective unconscious - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Collective unconscious is a term of analytical psychology, coined by Carl Jung. It is proposed to be a part of the unconscious mind, expressed in humanity and all life forms with nervous systems, and describes how the structure of the psyche autonomously organizes experience. Jung distinguished the collective unconscious from the personal unconscious, in that the personal unconscious is a personal reservoir of experience unique to each individual, while the collective unconscious collects and organizes those personal experiences in a similar way with each member of a particular species.

Public outcry revives tuition assistance for troops - News - Stripes: Each service runs its own program, but generally tuition assistance provides eligible servicemembers up to $4,500 per fiscal year, and a maximum of $250 per semester credit hour to cover tuition and allowable fees for servicemembers pursuing associate’s bachelor’s or master’s degrees. Last year, more than 286,000 servicemembers took advantage of the programs, according to the Defense Department.

The abrupt end to tuition assistance sparked outrage and anxiety throughout the military community as those enrolled in education programs wondered how they would pay for remaining classes. Others worried their promotion potential could be affected with the military’s emphasis on education as a key factor for advancement. A petition on the ‘We the People’ section of WhiteHouse.gov accumulated more than 100,000 signatures within 10 days — warranting a response from the White House.

9 Republicans Voted For Budget Deal That Cuts Military Retirement | The Lonely Conservative

I get why the Republicans didn’t want the spectacle of another government shut down. But they should have been united on sparing military veterans from cuts, especially when the Democrats refused to get rid of loopholes allowing illegal immigrants to collect welfare. Fighting to honor the promises made to the men and women who put their lives on the line for us is hardly a losing issue.

This Day in Health-Care History « Commentary Magazine: Shortly after 9 a.m., a pleased president praised the Senate and immediately left for his vacation in Hawaii. The bill had given him, he said, 95 percent of what he wanted. It had been only three and a half months since September 9, when the president had appeared before a joint session of Congress and a national TV audience to deliver an address that emphasized two things:

First, if you are among the hundreds of millions of Americans who already have health insurance through your job, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or the VA, nothing in this plan will require you or your employer to change the coverage or the doctor you have. (Applause.) Let me repeat this: Nothing in our plan requires you to change what you have.

Learned helplessness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Learned helplessness - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Learned helplessness is the condition of a human or non-human animal that has learned to behave helplessly, failing to respond even though there are opportunities for it to help itself by avoiding unpleasant circumstances or by gaining positive rewards. Learned helplessness theory is the view that clinical depression and related mental illnesses may result from a perceived absence of control over the outcome of a situation.[1] Organisms that have been ineffective and less sensitive in determining the consequences of their behaviour are defined as having acquired Learned Helplessness.[2]

Raising the Minimum Wage Also Raises Unemployment

Raising the Minimum Wage Also Raises Unemployment: The president made the case during his most recent State of the Union address that the way to prosperity was to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 an hour by 2015, from $7.25, where it has been since 2009. The rationale is that raising the minimum wage would help the middle class and businesses alike.

If that were the case, how do we explain the fact that since the federal minimum wage was instituted in 1938, it has been raised 22 times? If it did what it was supposed to do, there would be no reason to adjust it.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: By day 17, the situation has become so dire that Congress, resorting to desperate measures, decides to actually do something. It passes, and the president signs, a law raising the debt ceiling, thereby ensuring that the federal government can continue spending spectacular quantities of money that it does not have until the next major totally unforeseeable government financial crisis, scheduled for February 2014.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: … the federal government, in an unthinkable development that we cannot even think about, partially shuts down. The result is a catastrophe of near-sequester proportions. Within hours wolves are roaming the streets of major U.S. cities, and bacteria the size of mature salmon are openly cavorting in the nation’s water supply. In the Midwest, thousands of cows, no longer supervised by the Department of Agriculture, spontaneously explode. Yellowstone National Park — ALL of it — is stolen. In some areas gravity stops working altogether, forcing people to tie themselves to trees so they won’t float away. With the nation virtually defenseless, the Bermudan army invades the East Coast, within hours capturing Delaware and most of New Jersey.

Dave Barry’s Review of 2013, the Year of the Zombies - The Washington Post: another crisis in the form of a “sequester” that will happen automatically unless Congress can agree on a budget, which seems unlikely inasmuch as Congress cannot agree on what planet this is. If the sequester goes into effect, federal spending will continue to rise, but not quite as fast as it would have risen without the sequester. To a normal human, this means government spending is still increasing, but to Washington, the sequester means “draconian cuts” and is a looming disaster of epic proportions. Panic grips the city, as grim-faced former student council presidents write talking points far into the night.

Judge blasts Obama governance by ‘secret law’ | Fox News: PODESTA PAYOLA: BLURRED LINES - The buck raking of new White House adviser John Podesta may prove a problem for the man who is supposed to be turning the Obama presidency around. Longtime Clinton retainer and uber-influence peddler Podesta’s Center for American Progress disclosed its corporate donors, revealing a substantial overlap with the clients of the lobbying firm he founded with his brother Tony. Washington Free Beacon’s Lachlan Markay points out that 12 of the corporate donors to the liberal think tank were also clients of the lobbying firm. “It is not known how much these corporations collectively donated to CAP. However, they paid the Podesta Group more than $5.8 million for lobbying services, according to disclosure forms, during the years in which they were also contributing to CAP.” The ethics worry: Podesta’s lines were blurry enough as an unofficial White House adviser. Now that he’s officially on the team, what kind of cash will corporations be expected to pony up for access. And what will that cash buy?

JFK Cutting Taxes: A Fiscal Camelot | The Foundry: Conservative Policy News Blog from The Heritage Foundation

As the country marks the 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination, there are many reflections about the man and his legacy. For those old enough, the emotion of the day will never be forgotten.
When it comes to his economic decisions, it may surprise some to take a look his tax policies. They contrast sharply with the Democratic Party of today, and, in particular, with the tax policies pursued by President Obama.
JFK Cut Taxes to Get Out of a Recession
Like our current President, Kennedy came to office amidst a recession and stubbornly high unemployment. Rather than raise taxes, President Kennedy proposed across-the-board tax cuts, taking the top rate from 91 percent to 70 percent.
According to The Tax Foundation, President Kennedy’s tax cut was larger than the Reagan tax cuts and any single Bush tax cut, compared with national income. While no one would deem a 70 percent top rate desirable, it was a fiscal Camelot compared to the 91 percent top rate in existence when Kennedy took office. It reflected his belief that cutting taxes—not raising taxes—would benefit the economy.
Kennedy said that high taxes were a “deterrent to private initiative” and harmed economic recovery. In a speech to Congress advocating his tax cuts, President Kennedy declared, “Every dollar released from taxation that is spared or invested will help create a new job and a new salary.”
JFKontaxation
Even with the largest tax rate cut in history, Dr. Daniel Mitchell, then a senior fellow at The Heritage Foundation, noted that “Tax revenues climbed from $94 billion in 1961 to $153 billion in 1968, an increase of 62 percent (33 percent after adjusting for inflation).” The strong economic growth that resulted from the pro-growth tax cut helped sustain revenues. Although it’s hard to know what revenues would’ve been without the tax cuts, rates were so high at the time it is possible they had little or no effect on revenue.
President Obama has tried to tax and spend out of the recession. With tax increases totaling more than $3 trillion and full employment still on the wish list, Congress and President Obama should take some cues from JFK.

U.S. District Court Judge Ellen Huvelle ruled the presidential order is not within the bounds of executive privilege and called the government’s arguments in favor of secrecy “troubling.”
“The government appears to adopt the cavalier attitude that the President should be permitted to convey orders throughout the Executive Branch without public oversight … to engage in what is in effect governance by ‘secret law,’” Huvelle said.

Oh, and the NSA is sad that foreigners don’t trust our spies, or something.

Gingrich Schools Robert Reich On ‘Income Inequality’: “Every Major City Which Is A Poverty Center Is Run By Democrats”
ONATHAN KARL, SUBSTITUTE HOST: And let me ask you, Mr. Gingrich, Speaker, when you look at that issue of inequality - and this is something he's put front and center, the Pope has. It's something of course that President Obama talks a lot about. We saw the story about homelessness in New York--
NEWT GINGRICH, FORMER SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: Sure.
KARL: Stark reality of the gap in the nation's biggest city. Is this an issue that Republicans should be talking about?
GINGRICH: Absolutely. I mean, how can you justify the level of wealth in those big towers in New York City and the level of poverty in those alleys? And without talking about government, say, surely a society that cared, that believed every person was endowed by their creator with the right to pursue happiness, would come up with a better solution than 22,000 children that are homeless.
And I think that the Republican Party has an obligation to rethink some of its indifference to the very poor. And I think the Democrats have an obligation to ask themselves after 50 years of the war on poverty, isn't it clear that government is not a very good [unintelligible].
(CROSSTALK)
ROBERT REICH: The war on poverty - which next year we are going to celebrate the 50th anniversary in addition to the Civil Rights Act - the war on poverty was successful for a time. What has happened however over the last 30 years is that much of the, much of the ardor, much of the concern, much of the, what propelled that war on poverty has dissipated.
KARL: Why after five years of President Barack Obama we see the problem worse?
REICH: Well the problem is worse; I think it has something to do, perhaps, with the intransigence of the Speaker's Party, because every time there was a jobs bill, every time there was an effort to expand a low income housing, every time there was an effort to provide better opportunities for young people. We're talking about equal opportunity.
GINGRICH: Every major, every, this is baloney.
REICH: At the basis of this, what is baloney?
GINGRICH: Here's the baloney. Every major city which is a center of poverty is run by Democrats. Every major city. Their policies have failed, they're not willing to admit and the fact is it's the poor who suffer

Whole Foods CEO: Obamacare Is Hurting Our Employees | Washington Free Beacon

Whole Foods CEO: Obamacare Is Hurting Our Employees | Washington Free Beacon

Mackey told Varney that Whole Foods, which has been in business for 35 years and employees 80,000 workers, is being hit hard by Obamacare. “It’s raising our costs…We’ll have to cover things that are expensive that we may not want to cover, our team members may not want to have covered,” Mackey said. He explained that that costs will be raised, which could either depress wage increases or the corporation will be forced to pass the cost on to Whole Foods employees.
Obamacare mandates that employers must provide health care coverage for employees working more than 30 hours a week, a requirement that Mackey says is counterintuitive.
“[The mandate] creates the wrong incentives for employers. It creates incentive for fewer full time workers and more part time,” Mackey said. “If all our competitors are going that direction, we’ll probably have that same kind of incentive to do the same.”
Whole Foods has maintained a 75 percent full time and 25 percent part time work structure, something Mackey says is unusual in retail. Because of Obamacare, Whole Foods will be forced to adjust the full time/part time ratio to 70/30.

Hercules: The Thracian Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hercules: The Thracian Wars - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Yesterday, a tormented Demigod walked the earth: Hercules was the powerful son of the god king Zeus. For this, he received nothing but suffering his entire life. After twelve arduous labors and the loss of his family, the dark and world-weary soul turned his back on the gods, finding his only solace in combat. Over the years, he warmed to the company of six similar friends, their only bond being their love of fighting and presence of death. These men and women never questioned where they would go to fight or why or whom, just how much they would be paid - until the King of Thrace hired them to train his men to become the greatest army of all time. It was time for the group of lost souls to finally have their eyes opened to how far they have fallen, when they must train an army to become as ruthless and bloodthirsty as their reputation has become.

"Families have not fully recovered from the 2008 financial crisis, and too many Americans are still searching for jobs.

Freakonomics » Is Academia Like a Drug Gang?

Freakonomics » Is Academia Like a Drug Gang?

In Freakonomics, Dubner and Levitt wrote about how working for a drug gang is like working for McDonald’s. On LSE’s Impact of Social Sciences blog, Alexandre Afonso writes about how the academic labor market also resembles a drug gang:
Academic systems rely on the existence of a supply of “outsiders” ready to forgo wages and employment security in exchange for the prospect of uncertain security, prestige, freedom and reasonably high salaries that tenured positions entail….The academic job market is structured in many respects like a drug gang, with an expanding mass of outsiders and a shrinking core  of insiders. Even if the probability that you might get shot in academia is relatively small (unless you mark student papers very harshly), one can observe similar dynamics.
Afonso tracks employment trends in the academic labor market and explains the “insider-outsider” divide: like a drug gang, academia is a place where there are eager outsiders willing to forgo other employment opportunities to become an “insider” — a tenured professor. This creates a dual labor market:
On the one hand, there are relatively good conditions at the bottom at the PhD level, and opportunities have expanded recently because of massive investments in research programs and doctoral schools generating a mass of new very competitive PhDs. On the other hand, there are good jobs at the top, where full professors are comparatively well paid and have a great deal of autonomy. The problem is that there is nothing in the middle: for people who just received their PhD, there is just a big hole, in which they have to face a period of limbo in fixed-term contracts (wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiter) or substitute professor (Vertretungsprofessur) for a number of years, after which they can hope to get their first permanent job in their mid-40s, while this could happen in their mid-30s in the 1970s.

If you think voters are upset know, just wait

Democrats haven't had much to celebrate when it comes to their crowning achievement, ObamaCare. Lately they've resorted to promoting the number of people signing up (never mind the fact that people are, of course, mandated by law to do this).  This would be akin to using long lines at the DMV as a talking point for government success.
The dirty little secret that vulnerable Democrats are trying to keep quiet is that the worst of ObamaCare is yet to come. As Michael Boskin writes in the Wall Street Journal this morning, Americans should "be prepared for eligibility, payment and information protection debacles—and longer waits for care."

Pancha Ganapati is a modern five-day Hindu festival celebrated from December 21 through 25 in honor of Lord Ganesha, Patron of Arts and Guardian of Culture.
During each of the five days of Pancha Ganapati, a special sadhana, spiritual discipline, is focused upon by the entire family. Because of the festival’s importance as a new beginning and mending of all past mistakes, a shrine is created in the main living room of the home and decorated in the spirit of this festive occasion. At the center is placed a large wooden or bronze five-faced statue of Lord Pancha Ganapati. If this is not available, any large picture or statue of Lord Ganesha will do. Lord Ganesha is often depicted as coming from the forest; therefore, pine boughs (or banana leaves) may be used. Flashing lights, tinsel and colorful hanging ornaments may also be added. Each morning the children dress or decorate Ganesha in a different color: golden yellow on December 21, then royal blue, ruby red, emerald green and finally brilliant orange. These are the colors of His five powers, or shaktis.
Each day a tray of sweets, fruits and incense is offered to Lord Ganapati, often prepared and presented by the children. Chants, songs and bhajanas are sung in His praise. After puja, the abundant, diverse sweets are shared by one and all as prasada. Each day gifts are given to the children, who place them before Pancha Ganapati to open only on the fifth day. Gifts need not be extravagant or expensive; they should be within the means of each family. Ganesha does not want gift-giving to promote Western commercialism but to further the great Hindu culture. Greeting cards, ideally made by the children, offer Hindu art and wisdom, such as verses from the Vedas.

December 21 (Golden Yellow)

The family sadhana for the first day of Pancha Ganapati is to create a vibration of love and harmony among immediate family members. The day begins early, and the entire family works together to design and decorate the shrine with traditional symbols, rangoli, lamps and more. Then a grand puja is performed invoking the spirit of Pancha Ganapati in the home. The sadhana of the day now begins. The family sits together for the purpose of easing any strained relationships that have arisen during the year. They make amends one with another for misdeeds performed, insults given, mental pain and injuries caused and suffered. When forgiveness is offered to all by one and all, they speak of each other’s good qualities and resolve that in the days ahead they will remember the futility of trying to change others and the practicality changing one’s self to be the silent example for all to witness. Gifts are then exchanged and placed unopened before Pancha Ganapati. As the family writes on the doorstep, they pray for well being in the house.

December 22 (Royal Blue)

Day two is devoted to creating a vibration of love and harmony among neighbors, relatives and close friends and presenting them with heartfelt gifts. The sadhana of the day is to offer apologies and clear up any misunderstandings that exist. Relatives and friends in far-off places are written to or called, forgiveness is sought, apologies made and tensions released. Gifts received are placed unopened before Pancha Ganapati.

December 23 (Ruby Red)

The sadhana for the third day is to create a vibration of love and harmony among business associates, the casual merchant and the public at large. This is the day for presenting gifts to fellow workers and customers and to honor employers and employees with gifts and appreciation. The sadhana today is the settling of all debts and disputes. Gifts received are placed unopened before the Deity.

December 24 (Emerald Green)

The sadhana of day four is to draw forth the vibration of joy and harmony that comes from music, art, drama and the dance. Family, relatives and friends gather for satsang to share and enjoy their artistic gifts. Then all sit together before Ganesha, Patron of Arts and Guardian of Culture, discussing Hindu dharma and making plans to bring more cultural refinements into the home. More gifts are placed before Pancha Ganapati.

December 25 (Brilliant Orange)

The family sadhana for the final day is to bring forth love and harmony within all three worlds. Because of sadhanas well performed during the first four days, the family is now more open and aware of Ganesha’s grace, and their love for Him is now overflowing. On this day the entire family experiences an outpouring of love and tranquility from the great God Himself. His blessings fill the home and the hearts of everyone within it, inspiring them anew for the coming year.
