North Korean famine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

North Korean famine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Current status

North Korea has not yet resumed its food self-sufficiency and relies on external food aid from China, Pakistan, Japan, South Korea and the United States. In 2002, North Korea requested that food supplies no longer be delivered.[45]
In the mid-2000s, the World Food Programme reported that famine conditions were in imminent danger of returning to North Korea, and the government was reported to have mobilized millions of city-dwellers to help rice farmers.[46][47]
Agricultural production increased from about 2.7 million metric tons in 1997 to 4.2 million metric tons in 2004.[41] As of 2011, famine continues to be a problem for North Korea, although less so than in the mid to late 1990s. Flooding in 2007 and reductions in food aid exacerbated the problem, however. Moreover, damages during the time are still making North Korean economy retarded. According to Korea Forest Service in August, 2012, most of forests were seriously harmed due to massive flood and it is hard to expect them to recover up to now. [48]
Branigan, Tania (April 17, 2008). "UN fears tragedy over North Korean food shortage". The Guardian
In 2011, during a visit to North Korea, US ex-president Jimmy Carter reported that one third of children there were malnourished and stunted in their growth because of a lack of food. He also said that the North Korean state had reduced daily food intake from 1,400 calories to 700 calories in 2011[49] (by comparison, a normal food intake for a healthy European is 2,000-2,500 calories per day[50]). Some scholars believe that North Korea is purposefully exaggerating the food shortage, aiming to receive additional food supplies for its planned 2012 mass celebrations by means of foreign aid.[51]
Escaped North Koreans have reported that starvation has returned to the nation.[52] A study by South Korean anthropologists of North Korean children who had defected to China found that 18-year-old males were 5 inches shorter than South Koreans their age. Roughly 45% of North Korean children under the age of five are stunted from malnutrition. Most people eat meat only on public holidays, namely Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il’s birthdays.[53] It is reported that since the death of Kim Jong-il in December 2011, around 20,000 people have starved to death in South Hwanghae Province alone.[54][55]

Born Of Osiris - Shaping The Masterpiece Lyrics

Born Of Osiris - Shaping The Masterpiece Lyrics

I'm ready to go faster
Have you taken your seat
It's time we change things up
And let our impulse be the primary attraction
I'm looking at a disaster
A world that relies on deceit
The precious conveniences
Will leave us to only lose out faster
I've seen the blame at my feet
Allowed the evil to take me
Terminate the beliefs
That this is a masterpiece we're shaping
Embrace the slave ship
We are the undertakers
Taking Numbers
There is no direction from one another
Life is like a lesson can you interpret the truth
Why put your faith in question
If you cant see whats within you
Take a second to enjoy this
Before it passes right before you
I clearly see why
There's no answer for me
Cause I'm falling asleep
At the wheel of discovery
Chasing a dream that out runs every being
You look soon enough
But you'll never start seeing
The meaning of mischief the reason we kill
The itch that's inside us to indulge in the thrill
The sound of freedom will ring through the air
When we decide to take charge
When we decide to care.

Sabians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: The Sabians (Arabic: صابئة‎) of Middle Eastern tradition were a monotheistic Abrahamic religious group mentioned three times in the Quran with the people of the Book, "the Jews, the Sabians, and the Christians."[1] In the hadith, they are described merely as converts to Islam,[2] but interest in the identity and history of the group increased over time, and discussions and investigations about the Sabians begin to appear in later Islamic literature.

Sabians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabians - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Sābi'ūn knew God as the Rabb al-'alihah (lord of gods) and 'ilah al-'alihah (god of gods) and speak to angels in their meditations,[note 19] each of whom they believe dwell in different stars, which has led to the erroneous beliefs among some that Sābi'ūn worship angels while others derogatorily call them star-worshipers (and so it is said in Arabic saba'at al-nujūm, meaning "the stars appeared"). Sābi'ūn read from the Zaboor (as with the Slavonic Subbotniki or Psaltirschiki) and use the sun for a qiblah, facing the equator at mid day.[note 5][note 6][note 20][note 21] Their fundamental teaching is La ilahah il Allah (there is no god but Allah),[note 2][note 3][note 15] but besides this ardent unitarianism, Sābi'ūn are quite akin to Christians.[note 7][note 22] Hanif Sabians are more universal, looking to Noah as their prophet of the Dīn.[note 1]Sābi'ūn have five daily prayers[note 23] (though Zohar can join Asr while Maghrib can join Isha giving the appearance of three). They believe in all prophets, reiterating the Din of Noah and, not in the same way as the Muslims, believe in the Seal of the prophets.[note 24] They also fast for 30 days.[note 25]

Colorado: Obama Admin. Marijuana Crackdown Could Swing 'Entire Election': President Barack Obama’s Justice Department has sent letters to more than 57 medical marijuana businesses in Colorado, threatening the owners with imprisonment or asset forfeiture despite their compliance with state law. The National Cannabis Industry Association (NCIA) thinks enough frustrated Colorado voters could turn out against the Obama administration to vote for the state’s medical marijuana initiative in November and tip the state, which could ultimately decide the election.

Morning Examiner: Why didn’t Obama better protect Benghazi consulate? | WashingtonExaminer.com: Yesterday, President Obama, the Commander in Chief of the United States Armed Forces, ordered a Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team (FAST) of 50 U.S. Marines to secure the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Unfortunately, the order came more than a day late.

Politico is now reporting that the Benghazi consulate where U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed yesterday was “not protected by the contingent of Marines” that usually safeguards American missions abroad. “The Benghazi consulate had “lock-and-key” security, not the same level of defenses as a formal embassy,” Politico reports.

Warning Signs

Warning Signs

By Rick Ross, Expert Consultant and Intervention Specialist

Ten warning signs of a potentially unsafe group/leader.

  1. Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
  2. No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
  3. No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget, expenses such as an independently audited financial statement.
  4. Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions.
  5. There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
  6. Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
  7. There are records, books, news articles, or television programs that document the abuses of the group/leader.
  8. Followers feel they can never be "good enough".
  9. The group/leader is always right.
  10. The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible.

Ten warning signs regarding people involved in/with a potentially unsafe group/leader.

  1. Extreme obsessiveness regarding the group/leader resulting in the exclusion of almost every practical consideration.
  2. Individual identity, the group, the leader and/or God as distinct and separate categories of existence become increasingly blurred. Instead, in the follower's mind these identities become substantially and increasingly fused--as that person's involvement with the group/leader continues and deepens.
  3. Whenever the group/leader is criticized or questioned it is characterized as "persecution".
  4. Uncharacteristically stilted and seemingly programmed conversation and mannerisms, cloning of the group/leader in personal behavior.
  5. Dependency upon the group/leader for problem solving, solutions, and definitions without meaningful reflective thought. A seeming inability to think independently or analyze situations without group/leader involvement.
  6. Hyperactivity centered on the group/leader agenda, which seems to supercede any personal goals or individual interests.
  7. A dramatic loss of spontaneity and sense of humor.
  8. Increasing isolation from family and old friends unless they demonstrate an interest in the group/leader.
  9. Anything the group/leader does can be justified no matter how harsh or harmful.
  10. Former followers are at best-considered negative or worse evil and under bad influences. They can not be trusted and personal contact is avoided.

Ten signs of a safe group/leader.

  1. A safe group/leader will answer your questions without becoming judgmental and punitive.
  2. A safe group/leader will disclose information such as finances and often offer an independently audited financial statement regarding budget and expenses. Safe groups and leaders will tell you more than you want to know.
  3. A safe group/leader is often democratic, sharing decision making and encouraging accountability and oversight.
  4. A safe group/leader may have disgruntled former followers, but will not vilify, excommunicate and forbid others from associating with them.
  5. A safe group/leader will not have a paper trail of overwhelmingly negative records, books, articles and statements about them.
  6. A safe group/leader will encourage family communication, community interaction and existing friendships and not feel threatened.
  7. A safe group/leader will recognize reasonable boundaries and limitations when dealing with others.
  8. A safe group/leader will encourage critical thinking, individual autonomy and feelings of self-esteem.
  9. A safe group/leader will admit failings and mistakes and accept constructive criticism and advice.
  10. A safe group/leader will not be the only source of knowledge and learning excluding everyone else, but value dialogue and the free exchange of ideas.

Don't be naive, develop a good BS Detector.
You can protect yourself from unsafe groups and leaders by developing a good BS detector. Check things out, know the facts and examine the evidence. A safe group will be patient with your decision making process. If a group or leader grows angry and anxious just because you want to make an informed and careful decision before joining; beware.

What do you call it when a major US corporation lobbies for its own, special tax law that is just for them, and then pays negative tax rates on billions of dollars in profits? We call it the GE Tax Hole.
When you file your taxes, do you end up with more money, or less money? You have less money, of course – unless you’re GE. If you’re GE, you pay a tax rate of negative 18% – and you end up making billions of dollars extra.

CRS report: number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled after Obama suspended work requirement | WashingtonExaminer.com

CRS report: number of able-bodied adults on food stamps doubled after Obama suspended work requirement | WashingtonExaminer.com

Obama administration officials have insisted that their decision to grant states waivers to redefine work requirements for welfare recipients would not “gut” the landmark 1996 welfare reform law. But a new report from the Congressional Research Service obtained by the Washington Examiner suggests that the administration’s suspension of a separate welfare work requirement has already helped explode the number of able-bodied Americans on food stamps.
In addition to the broader work requirement that has become a contentious issue in the presidential race, the 1996 welfare reform law included a separate rule encouraging able-bodied adults without dependents to work by limiting the amount of time they could receive food stamps. President Obama suspended that rule when he signed his economic stimulus legislation into law, and the number of these adults on food stamps doubled, from 1.9 million in 2008 to 3.9 million in 2010, according to the CRS report, issued in the form of a memo to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.
“This report once again confirms that President Obama has severely gutted the welfare work requirements that Americans have overwhelmingly supported since President Clinton signed them into law,” Cantor said in an emailed statement. “It’s time to reinstate these common-sense measures, and focus on creating job growth for those in need.”
Under the rule adopted in 1996, food stamps for able-bodied adults without dependents were limited to three months in a 36-month period unless the participant in the program “works at least 20 hours a week; participates in an employment and training program for at least 20 hours per week; or participates in a (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) ‘workfare’ program for at least 20 hours per week.”
Obama’s economic stimulus legislation suspended the rule for all states starting April 2009. Delaware continued to enforce the rule anyway, along with New York City and parts of Colorado, South Dakota, and Texas. This suspension expired at the end of the 2010 fiscal year (Sept. 30, 2010) and Congress rebuffed Obama’s requests to extend it in his fiscal years 2011 and 2012 budgets. However, Obama used his regulatory authority to effectively extend the waivers to nearly all states over the past two years. (The law grants the executive the authority to do this in states where the unemployment rate is above 10 percent or there’s a “lack of sufficient jobs.”)
Though the weakening of the economy would have led to an increase in food stamp usage with or without a waiver, the doubling of the use of food stamps by the able-bodied population without dependents exceeded the 43 percent increase in food stamp usage among the broader population over the same 2008 to 2010 time frame. This gives more weight to the idea that the waiver fueled the food stamp growth among the population it affected, beyond where it would have been even in a weak economy.
The CRS report does not have data for the 2011 and 2012 fiscal years.
Read the full report here.

It is always dangerous to allow inflation figures to be fiddled | City A.M.

It is always dangerous to allow inflation figures to be fiddled | City A.M.

Wednesday 19th September 2012, 2:09am
ALLISTER HEATH
HERE is a rule that never fails: whenever the
authorities decide to change the way they measure inflation, reach for
your wallet, because you are about to be stealthily robbed. Each
revision inevitably discovers that inflation was, in fact, lower than we
realised, which means that all is for the best in the best of all
possible worlds, interest rates can safely be cut and your pay rise or
inflation-protected gilt is suddenly worth a lot less.

There may in theory be good technical reasons to change the way the
retail price index (RPI) is measured, which would roughly bring it into
line with the lower consumer price index. But at some point we need a
cost of living measure that actually reflects what is happening, rather
than a scientifically perfect index which defines away price hikes
thanks to technological progress. It is hard to compare a £1,000
computer today with a £1,000 computer of a decade ago. Every £1 spent
today buys more computing power, which means that the real value of the
computer has plummeted even if its price has remained the same or even
gone up; this point is made by the brilliant Paul Ormerod on page 20.

But there is a danger in pushing that argument too far. Remember the
last time the measures were changed in 2003: Gordon Brown, partly to
harmonise the UK with the Eurozone at a time when membership of the euro
was still possible, and partly because it allowed a loosening of
monetary policy, changed the Bank of England’s inflation target from 2.5
per cent on the RPI-X measure to 2 per cent on the Harmonised Index of
Consumer Prices (HICP), renamed the CPI to placate UK Eurosceptics. Yet
because the gap between the two measures was greater than 0.5 per cent,
monetary policy was loosened at the worst possible time, helping to fuel
the credit and housing bubble that ultimately destroyed the economy. It
was an idiotic decision to make. “Reforming” the RPI wouldn’t be as
bad. But it will slash the value of index-linked gilts, hit pension
funds and reduce pay hikes. The biggest negative downside, however, is
that it will make those in authority even more complacent about the
silent thief that is inflation.

REGULATORS MUST BE JUST

THERE were crippling problems with the old Financial Services Authority,
which failed miserably. Martin Wheatley, the new boss of one of its
successor organisations, the Financial Conduct Authority, is a breath of
fresh air who will hopefully be a much more effective regulator.

But his usually impeccable judgement failed him yesterday: he was
undoubtedly exaggerating to emphasise a point, but his remarks that he
“would shoot first and ask questions later” were inappropriate.

Regulators imbued with extreme powers should not joke about ignoring
basic justice and the rule of law. Regulators have rightly complained
about the culture of some private institutions, saying that the right
tone needs to be set by those at the top – but the same should apply to
regulators, prosecutors, the police and all of those entrusted with
ensuring an orderly society.

Britain needs an effective regulatory agency that roots out fraud and
pitilessly prosecutes law-breakers. But it also needs a fair and just
one that doesn’t destroy the reputations or livelihoods of innocent
people in the process. All must be deemed innocent until proven guilty.
It can’t be beyond the ability of the FCA to design a system that
catches bad guys without massive collateral damage. Regulators seeking
to demonstrate their toughness must remember that rough justice is no
justice at all.

Because, you see, all these programs have one thing in common. They require a photo ID. It’s not like we asked them for their birth certificates. (Dig intended)

The American Spectator : The Spectacle Blog : Reagan's Welfare Queen Issue Resurfaces in Romney Video

The American Spectator : The Spectacle Blog : Reagan's Welfare Queen Issue Resurfaces in Romney Video

Ronald Reagan used to be excoriated for talking about the "welfare queen" when he ran for president.
Liberals would work themselves into a foaming hysteria attacking Reagan on the subject, insisting he made it up out of whole cloth. Just the other week Chris Matthews was singing this same tune, insisting the story was both fiction and racist.
This is worth recalling as Mitt Romney comes under assault for essentially making a broader version of the same charge -- saying that there are considerable millions of Americans out there who are now on the government roles for one reason or another, considering themselves victims etc.
First, as with Romney, Reagan was right.
As Matt Lewis of the Daily Caller reminds, Reagan's story was 100% accurate. And the "Welfare Queen" story was accurately recorded -- wonder of wonders -- by the both the New York Times and the Washington Post. Lewis points to this excerpt from the original manuscript of ex-Reagan aide Craig Shirley's book Rendezvous With Destiny:
Chicago's justice system was cracking down on people such as Reagan's famed "welfare queen" Linda Taylor who was finally convicted of using multiple aliases and bilking the taxpayers out of thousands of dollars. (New York Times, March 19, 1977) Reagan had made much of the woman in the 1976 campaign as an example of the "waste, fraud and abuse" that the federal and state welfare agencies engaged in. It was much disputed at the time over exactly how much she stole. Human Events, Reagan's favorite weekly newspaper, claimed one thing and some in the media claimed another about the amount of her excesses. The Washington Post account verified the conservatives' charges about the woman, stating that she'd stolen over $150,000, had 26 aliases, three Social Security numbers, 30 different addresses around the city and "owned a portfolio of stocks and bonds under various names and a garage full of autos including a Cadillac, Lincoln and a Chevy wagon." She incidentally had several dead husbands and had just returned from a trip to Hawaii, presumably to avoid the last bit of the winter of 1977. All of her ill-gotten goods were courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer. "Prosecutors say there is no category of public aid -- welfare payments, rent subsidies, medical reimbursements, food stamps, transportations allowances, child-care expenses, survivors' benefits --that Taylor had neglected to apply" for. The Post re-dubbed her, "The Chutzpa Queen." (Washington Post, March 13, 1977, page 3.)
In other words,  Reagan's "Welfare Queen" story was true, and reported on in the day by the two leading papers in liberal land.
What does this have to do with Romney?
What Romney is saying in this Mother Jones clip, in essence, is that the Welfare Queen mentality has spread to a larger pool of Americans.
Romney is right now, just as Reagan was right with the original story. The Welfare Queen really existed. So too do large numbers of Americans, whatever the correct percentage, live today some version of the Welfare Queen existence. No one is suggesting -- Romney certainly did not suggest -- that these people are doing something illegal.
What he was suggesting -- and he should stick with this -- is that far too many people are not paying taxes in this country, leaving it not to the rich -- but the middle class- to pick up the tab.
Obama is trying to create a dependent society, saying taxing the rich is the answer to all of this nonsense. In fact, as Margaret Thatcher used to say, sooner or later liberals will run out of rich people's money. And they will step up what is already a liberal war on
Mitt Romney is right in what he said.
Can he explain it better?
Doubtless.
But was he right?
Yes he was. And he shouldn't be defensive. Middle class voters know every day that unless this problem is addressed pronto -- the financials of this country will swiftly go Greek.
What this video reveals is that Mitt Romney has raised the modern version of the Welfare Queen issue.
It was in fact a big winner for Ronald Reagan. And can be for Romney.

SHOCK: Obama To Apologize To Muslims For Mohammed Movie By Freeing Blind Sheikh Who Bombed World Trade Center « Pat Dollard

According to Team Beck’s source, the move is part of Obama’s apology for the Mohammed movie…”the crisis” they refer to in the article is Muslim rage at the anti-Islam movie, and by “resolve” the only mean apologize for and ban any such further criticism of Islam…

(THE BLAZE) The U.S. State Department is currently in negotiations with the Egyptian government for the transfer of custody of Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as “the Blind Sheikh,” for humanitarian and health reasons, a source close to the the Obama administration told TheBlaze.

Glenn Beck revealed the controversial news on his show Monday.

The negotiations are allegedly part of the ongoing discussions with the Egyptian government to resolve the crisis plaguing the Middle East, the source told TheBlaze. Calls to the State Department for comment referred us to the Department of Justice, and nothing has been confirmed.

The Blind Sheikh is serving a life sentence in American prison for his role in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. His release has been called one of the top priorities of the new Islamist administration in Egypt. Many have pinpointed the cause of last week‘s unrest in Egypt to be protests over the Blind Sheikh’s release– not an anti-Islam YouTube video.
Citing the handling of the current crisis in the Middle East, and how the administration’s explanation that an anti-Islamic video is to blame, Beck warned that the administration may be trying to initiate a “Bubba effect.”

“If this is true, and we believe it to be true,” he explained, “I believe this administration is trying to initiate a ‘Bubba effect.’ That is, the average person turning against the government, collectively…because no one trusts them.”

“No matter how bad a citizen may be behaving, the citizen’s reaction is worse in the Bubba effect. We have to be very careful America…because it’s going to get tougher from here on out.”

John McCain promise comes true, gas prices under Obama skyrocket to close to four dollars a gallon | Video | TheBlaze.com

It’s hard for a politician to keep their campaign promises.  However, John McCain told America in 2008 that an Obama presidency will bring $4 a gallon prices to the pump.  Just months away from completion of his first term, Obama presides over a national gas average of 3.86 a gallon and that includes states where the average is $4 and above — just as one of McCain’s ads promised.

Quantitative Easing Hurts the 99 Percent | The Weekly Standard

The Fed's policy is crony capitalism.

9:50 AM, Sep 17, 2012 • By MICHAEL WARREN
Last week, Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke announced the central bank would begin another round of quantitative easing, the term of art for the Fed's policy of purchasing securities in an attempt to stimulate the economy. With his plan to buy $40 billion in securities per month, Bernanke has irked conservatives opposed to loose monetary policy, and some have described the policy as "unwise and unnecessary."
At Reason, Anthony Randazzo discusses why quantitative easing should have the Occupy Wall Street movement up in arms:
Last month, Bernanke said that quantitative easing had contributed to the rebound in stock prices over the past few years, and suggested this was a positive outcome. “This effect is potentially important, because stock values affect both consumption and investment decisions,” he argued, apparently under the belief that the Fed has a third mandate to support rising stock prices.
This is ironically a trickle down monetary policy theory, where rising stock prices mean more wealth and more consumption that trickles down the economic ladder. One problem with this idea is that there is a gigantic mountain of household debt—about $12 trillion worth—that is diverting away any trickle down. An even worse assumption is that the stock market really reflects what is going on in the real economy.
Where the Occupy movement should really be teed off is when you consider that most equity shares in America are owned by the wealthiest 10 percent. That is not inherently a problem—wealthier individuals with more disposable income will have more ability take ownership stakes in companies than those in lower income brackets. And it is not a call for class warfare. However, it does mean that when the Fed engages in quantitative easing it is providing a benefit to a very narrow segment of society at the expense of others (either through future inflation or through the cost of raising taxes to pay for increased federal debts). That is the definition of crony capitalism.

Obama Administration Fights For The NDAA - Business Insider

Obama Administration Fights For The NDAA - Business Insider: The Obama administration had some harsh words Friday after a federal judge appointed by Obama said the government doesn't have a right to indefinitely detain anyone even remotely associated with terrorist groups.

Judge Katherine B. Forrest permanently blocked the government from enforcing the National Defense Authorization Act, claiming it was too vague and would have a "chilling effect" on free speech.

And now the Department of Justice is calling Forrest's ruling "unprecedented," arguing that the government has long had the authority to detain anyone it deems a threat to the county, The Wall Street Journal's Law Blog reported Friday.
