Woodward’s devastating account of Obama’s failed leadership | WashingtonExaminer.com

Arrogant, aloof, and unprepared is how Bob Woodward portrays President Obama in his new book The Price of Politics, set to be released next week.

The book recounts Obama’s troubled relationship with Congress, from his inauguration through last summer’s failed debt-limit negotiations, with Woodward concluding, “It is a fact that President Obama was handed a miserable, faltering economy and faced a recalcitrant Republican opposition. But presidents work their will — or should work their will — on important matters of national business. . . . Obama has not.”

The Conservative Kerouac | The American Conservative

The Conservative Kerouac | The American Conservative: Each of these groups is absolutely sincere in its self-identification with Kerouac. Each sees its concerns and agendas reflected in his roiling ocean of language. Yet this bopping, scatting, mystical jazz poet who almost singlehandedly willed the 1960s counterculture into being was himself a political conservative and a Catholic.

How can this be?

The key to understanding Kerouac lies in a close examination of his roots, for it was in the small French Canadian community of Lowell, Massachusetts that the future author was inculcated with the values that would carry him through his life. He did indeed go on to lead a wild existence filled with alcohol, drugs, and perpetual shiftlessness; he fled from monogamy as from leprosy. Yet one cannot grasp the soul of Kerouac unless one understands his fundamentally traditional core. He never wished to foment a revolution. He did not desire to change America; he intended to document, celebrate, and, in the end, eulogize it.

Dammit, where’s mine?
Oh, and Republicans are the people who rigged the system. They’re trying to take away your rights to vote, to health care, to education, to housing. They hate women, gays and immigrants. They don’t pay their fair share and they’re un-American.
Barack Obama lights candles, Mitt Romney spreads darkness, and Osama bin Laden is dead.
There, I saved you the time of watching the Democratic convention. For three grating days, demands for more government spending were coupled with sweeping character assassinations of Romney. The GOP is not just wrong; it is immoral. Read more at The New York Post...

Forward: June, July Jobs Revised Down, Participation Level Plummets to 30-Year Low

Forward: June, July Jobs Revised Down, Participation Level Plummets to 30-Year Low: And what a bomb it is. Expectations for the new jobs numbers ranged from 150,000 to 210,000. Instead, only 96,000 new private sector jobs were created -- a brutal number, even worse than last month's.

The President was given a bit of window dressing in the form of the unemployment rate, which dipped from 8.3% to 8.1%. But even the Obama-worshiping media isn't attempting to spin this into good news. The reason the number dropped was only due to a staggering number of people, 368,000, giving up the search for work and leaving the workforce.

Out Of Touch White House Says “Recovery Continues” | The Right Sphere: This is just unbelievable. On the heels of today’s horrific jobs report in which not only were a paltry 96,000 jobs added, but almost 360,000 also left the workforce, the White House Council of Economic Advisers chairman Alan Krueger had an absolutely ridiculous statement on this complete disaster. From Politico:

  • “While there is more work that remains to be done, today’s employment report provides further evidence that the U.S. economy is continuing to recover from the worst downturn since the Great Depression,” he said in a statement.

Continuing to recover? Try telling that to not only the 360,000 people who just gave up looking for job, but the millions and millions of Americans who are out of work. And they say the GOP is out of touch? Please.

Hanson: The hare and the tortoise | Richmond Times-Dispatch

Hanson: The hare and the tortoise | Richmond Times-Dispatch: Barack Obama does not do well as Richard Nixon. Four years ago, he ran on a new civility, an end to name-calling and an abhorrence of partisan bickering. And an unknown Obama without a record was largely able to abide by his professed ethos in 2008. After all, it was easy to as donations poured in, the McCain campaign was as polite as it was timid, and the banalities of untried hope and change mesmerized millions.

But now, all the new negative advertising just cloaks Obama in hypocrisy. By the same token, Romney's challenge has always been that he is blandly and predictably straight-arrow. If that normalcy means he cannot give soaring hope-and-change speeches, it also ensures that casting him as a multifarious sinner is preposterous, and reflects more poorly on the accuser than the intended target.

Disaster! Only 96,000 Jobs Added in August... | RedFlagNews.com

Disaster! Only 96,000 Jobs Added in August... | RedFlagNews.com: Forget last night’s speech. Forget Clinton’s speech. Forget Romney’s speech. This is what could decide the election.

The economy added only 96,000 jobs in August, the Labor Department just announced, well below the 150,000 or so needed just to keep pace with growth in the work force. Unemployment declined from 8.3 percent to 8.1 percent, but that’s only because people are giving up searching for jobs and leaving the workforce. Since they’re no longer counted, the percent of unemployed declined.

This is very, very bad news for President Obama. It may even explain why he seemed kind of flat during portions of Thursday night’s speech, since I understand he knew the numbers at the time.

I assure you, there are blisters on people’s hands at Romney campaign headquarters in Boston from all the high fiving going on. Read more at White House Dossier...

Trade Unions and Nazi Germany

Trade Unions and Nazi Germany: When Hitler came to power in January 1933, he saw trade unions as exercising more power over the workers than he could. Therefore, trade unions were seen as a challenge to be dispensed with. Hitler knew that he needed the workers to be on his side but he could not allow trade unions to exert the potential power they had. Therefore, trade unions were banned in Nazi Germany and the state took over the role of looking after the working class.

Portman: $16 Trillion Debt by the Numbers - Press Releases - Newsroom - Rob Portman

Exactly How Enormous is Washington's National Debt?

Washington, D.C. – This week, the U.S. national debt topped $16 trillion for the first time in history.

“We all know that the $16 trillion milestone is the latest sign in a string of troubling evidence that our nation is headed in the wrong direction, but what may be less clear is exactly what this number means to our children and grandchildren who will be left to pay the bills,” Portman said.  “I hope that this breakdown of the nation’s massive debt will help to shed light on just how grave Washington’s debt malpractice has become and why we need pro-growth policies and common-sense spending restraint now.”

$16 Trillion In $1 Bills
  • Would cover the entire State of Ohio nearly 1.5 times
  • Would stack to the moon 4 times
  • Would fill the Horseshoe at Ohio State 19 times over
  • Would fill the Sears Tower 31 times over
  • Would cover every square inch of highways, road, parking lots, and pavement in the U.S.
 Other Comparisons
  • $51,000 per person
  • $130,000 per household
  • 32 times as large as the GDP of Ohio
  • Equal to size of our country's entire economy (GDP )
  • The approximate value of the entire U.S. stock market

New tax in Cuba threatens consumption in a hungry nation - Yahoo! News Canada

New tax in Cuba threatens consumption in a hungry nation - Yahoo! News Canada: Cuba has slapped a new customs tax on everyday goods shipped from overseas in a drive that experts say could weaken the economy and sap consumption.

The levy took effect Monday and is payable in foreign currency. It targets goods imported by private citizens, often self-employed people who have started up businesses as part of timid reforms undertaken by the communist government in 2011.

Carmen Arias, deputy director of the customs service, said the taxes are "a way to counter this non-commercial means of personal enrichment."

But economist Mauricio de Miranda disagrees, calling the measure disproportionate and saying it could act as "a self-imposed embargo with a damaging effect on people's living standards."

Clinton rejects Obamanomics, embraces Reaganomics - Conservative News: He’s the only Democrat since FDR to win two full presidential terms, presiding over the longest peacetime economic expansion in U.S. history. Unemployment, 7.5 percent when Clinton took office, was down to 4 percent when he left. The Dow Jones industrial average, which roughly charts the growth of pensions and retirement accounts, more than tripled on his watch. Even more stunning, the U.S. government was beginning to sustain the most serious budget surpluses in nearly a century.

But there is much irony in all of this: The great Clinton economy began when he embraced the essence of Reaganomics: tax cuts, spending restraint, welfare reform, free trade and the end of his own budget-crushing entitlement program, universal health care.

Salamander is world's first photosynthetic vertebrate | MNN - Mother Nature Network: Scientists have long believed that only plants, algae, some bacteria, and a few invertebrates were capable of taking advantage of photosynthesis, which converts sunlight directly into energy. But now, for the first time, a photosynthetic vertebrate has been found, according to Nature.

The incredible creature is none other than the fairly common spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum). Ironically, the spotted salamander is not a new species for researchers, and it has long been known that the animal's embryos share a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae. That relationship, however, was always assumed to be an outside one, whereby the algae and the salamander work separately toward a fair exchange of resources.

AN OPEN LETTER TO...

AN OPEN LETTER TO...

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE REPUBLICAN NATIONAL COMMITTEE

By: Julianne Thompson – National Delegate, Georgia

Chairman Reince Preibus, members of the Rules Committee, and the entire voting delegation of the 2012 Republican National Convention:

As a National Delegate to the 2012 RNC, I am extremely disappointed that a rule would be passed through committee that essentially strips the grassroots of all of it’s representative power by ridding State Parties of their ability to choose whom they will send as delegates and alternates to represent their State to the Republican National Convention. The rules change would allow the Presidential nominee sweeping new power to override that process and choose their own National Delegates. The rule also allows the RNC (with only a 3/4 vote) the power to amend the party's rules without a vote by the full Republican National Convention.

The GOP is the political Party of the grassroots. Our national delegates are the boots-on-the-ground that get Republicans elected. We are there for County meetings, State Conventions, National Conventions, and most importantly we spend our time and money canvassing our neighborhoods, going door to door, making phone calls, writing personal endorsement letters, and getting-out-the-vote for Republicans. We are the worker bees, and we are the heart and soul of the Republican Party.

We have always believed that our Party is the one who best represents what it means to be an American…freedom! With your current attempt at this rules change, you are essentially striking the first blow that chips away at that freedom, and you disenfranchise the very people that turned the tide for the GOP in 2010 by returning power in the U.S. House of Representatives to Republicans.

I would like to hope that our nominee is unaware of the skullduggery that occurred with regard to this attempt at shutting out the people that have unified to help him win in November. The audacity of creating a firestorm when there is an opportunity for unity and peace that is needed to win back the Senate and take back the White House is irresponsible and I seriously question the motives of those behind this attempt.

Why the change in rules? That is the million-dollar question, and it is fairly easy to answer. There are still those in place in the GOP and on campaigns that would like to use the delegate and alternate seats as rewards for donating large checks to campaigns and the RNC.

If your desire is to win elections, then I strongly suggest that you engage the grassroots and show respect to those who help put you in power.

During a time that should ring of unity, you have put the GOP at a crossroads. Do you want to win this election and future elections? Now is your opportunity to prove it. Either take it to the floor and let us vote it down, and better yet, pull this insulting attempt to disenfranchise the heart and soul of our Republican Party!

Sincerely,

Julianne Thompson, National Delegate for Mitt Romney – Georgia

*** ATTENTION NATIONAL DELEGATES: A minority report was put together, so this change could be brought to the floor and voted-on by the entire delegation. Despite attempts to pressure rules committee members into not signing-on to the report, signatures are still being actively sought, so this report can be brought forward.

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR RULES COMMITTEE REPRESENTATIVES TODAY AND TELL THEM TO OPPOSE THIS CHANGE AND SIGN THE MINORITY REPORT.

RNC rules change upsets conservatives - Conservative News

RNC rules change upsets conservatives - Conservative News: Party conservatives such as Republican National Committeemen Morton Blackwell of Virginia and Jim Bopp of Indiana voiced strong opposition. Such a change, they warned, could spell “evolving rules” during the four-year period between presidential elections. Moreover, conservatives feel, this is one more step toward the national party forcing its way on state parties—an argument that was pivotal to eliminating another proposed rule that would have given the presidential candidate and not the state party over who actually serves as a national convention delegate.
