The Ultimate Treachery | RedState

The Ultimate Treachery | RedState

Do you want to know what is really extreme?  The creation of the Department of Education, after surviving almost 200 years without it.  Since the DOE was created, the cost of college tuition has increased over 439% adjusted for inflation!  The rate of increase is almost exactly commensurate with the rate of growth of DOE subsidization.  As you can see from this chart, the government-induced housing bubble pales in comparison to the government-induced Big Education bubble.
US News and World Report

Remember that the Department of Education began operating on May 16, 1980.  Imagine how extreme the inflation in education costs would have been had the extremists thwarted the creation of the DOE back in 1980?  Come to think of it, what would we have done had Dick Lugar failed to vote to create the Department of Green Energy in 1977?  I guess that part was left off the mailer.
This is all economics 101 for Republicans, but I guess they feel they can say anything to an audience of Democrats, as long as they serve the purpose of reelecting an 80-year old liberal.  The real irony here, as Bill Kristol points out, is that Young Guns was created to “chart a new course for the center-right movement and the House majority.”  Lugar is neither new, center-right, or in the House!
Heaven forbid me to label this as Republican-In-Name-Only behavior, but let’s just call it plain old treachery.

California unions attempting to rig local bankruptcy proceedings in their favor - Public Sector Inc. Forum

California unions attempting to rig local bankruptcy proceedings in their favor - Public Sector Inc. Forum: One of the growing trends in California's era of economic recklessness has been the proliferation of local bankruptcies, often driven by the excessive legacy costs of public workers. As might be expected, the state's public-sector unions, perceiving a threat to their benefits, have been anxious to insulate themselves as much as possible from the fiscal pruning that accompanies these procedures. That's why last year organized labor got behind AB 506, a measure that requires "neutral evaluation" by a mediator for 60 days before a city can seek full bankruptcy protection (unless the city declares a fiscal emergency). The hope, of course, is that the evaluation process will lead to fewer union perks being gutted by reeling cities.

The bill eventually passed the Legislature and was signed by Governor Jerry Brown, though thankfully not until some of the more outrageous union provisions in the original draft were dropped or amended. But now, with the law only a few months old, big labor is back for a second bite at the apple.

France's Hollande warns of wave of layoffs after presidential vote | Reuters: (Reuters) - France's Socialist presidential frontrunner Francois Hollande said on Saturday he was expecting a wave of layoffs to follow next weekend's election, but pledged his government would not stand idly by as companies dismissed workers.

Hollande, 57, is on track to win the May 6 runoff against President Nicolas Sarkozy, due largely to the conservative leader's failure to keep his promise to cut stubbornly high unemployment in the euro zone's second largest economy.

YOUNG: Independents leaning right - Washington Times: Political independents are continuing their 2010 tilt toward Republicans. The latest evidence comes from the presidential primaries, in which independents’ participation percentage is almost universally higher than in 2008. The significance of these increases could be no less significant this November than it was in the midterm elections that produced broad Republican gains.

EDITORIAL: Where's the recovery? - Washington Times

EDITORIAL: Where's the recovery? - Washington Times: April remains a cruel month. New jobless claims are the highest they’ve been since late January, with the four-week average stubbornly hovering around the 375,000 mark. Though we’re technically in a recovery, nobody believes it. A Rasmussen Reports survey earlier this week shows a majority is under the impression America is still in recession. That’s for good reason.

To dig America out of the hole created by the financial sector’s collapse, we need an explosion of industry. Instead, we’re seeing a fizzle. The Philadelphia Reserve Bank found manufacturing output growth slowed slightly in the mid-Atlantic region, with its index of general business activity for the factory sector falling from 12.5 in March to 8.5 in April. The lackluster performance dampens the rest of the economy. People who don’t feel secure about their economic future aren’t investing in homes, so housing inventory remains substantial, with 2.4 million houses listed for sale by the end of February. In a healthy market, an average of 6 million homes changes hands in the course of a year; today, that number is closer to 4.5 million. With a significant chunk of the market still in the process of foreclosure, housing won’t recover anytime soon.

Ann Coulter - April 25, 2012 - ROMNEY DOING THE JOB REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT JUST WON'T DO: Romney is one of the few Republicans to recognize that there is no need to "round up" illegal aliens (in the lingo of amnesty supporters) to get them to go home. Illegal aliens will leave the same way they arrived. They decided to walk across the border to get jobs -- and welfare, apparently -- and they'll walk back across the border as soon as the jobs and welfare dry up.

Limited Government Is Essential to Economic Growth

Limited Government Is Essential to Economic Growth: We do not know who will be the next President of the United States. As we opined last week, Republican nominee-apparent Mitt Romney is not likely to win if he doesn’t soon articulate an inspiring message or vision. President Obama, on the other hand, very well may win re-election with his strategy of pitting the vast majority of voters (90%) who barely pay 30% of personal income taxes, against the much smaller (10%) who pay 70% of all personal income taxes. Such an outcome, we believe, will set the country on a potentially irreversible path to ever-expanding government, at the expense of sustainable economic growth for the country and its people.

The first person to legally own a black slave in the American colonies was black! - Celebs - Apr 14, 2012 - OMG Facts

The first person to legally own a black slave in the American colonies was black! - Celebs - Apr 14, 2012 - OMG Facts: Anthony Johnson was an Angolan brought over and held as an indentured servant. His master was a merchant who lived in the Virginia Colony in 1620. In those days, Africans brought over to the Colonies were indentured servants. They had a specific time that they served, and were later freed.

After Johnson was freed, he became a successful tobacco farmer. Most notably, he was the first to legally own a black slave in the mainland of the American colonies. He managed to convince the court that his servant, John Casor, was his for life. Casor became the first state recognized slave in Virginia.

Another notable thing about his life is that when Johnson died in 1670, the court said he was a legal alien and seized all his land, not letting him pass it to his family.

Moonbattery » Illegal Aliens Rake in $Billions Through Tax Fraud

Moonbattery » Illegal Aliens Rake in $Billions Through Tax Fraud

Why stop at voter fraud? Undocumented Democrats do tax fraud too — with the help of their benefactors, our rulers:
The Internal Revenue Service says everyone who is employed in the United States — even those who are working here illegally — must report income and pay taxes. Of course, undocumented workers are not supposed to have a social security number. So for them to pay taxes, the IRS created what’s called an ITIN, an individual taxpayer identification number. A 9-digit ITIN number issued by the IRS provides both resident and nonresident aliens with a unique identification number that allows them to file tax returns.
Instead of being thrown out on their ears, those who are in the country unlawfully are officially acknowledged as semi-citizens. What could go wrong? Here’s what:
Each spring, at tax preparation offices all across the nation, many illegal immigrants are now eagerly filing tax returns to take advantage of a tax loophole, using their ITIN numbers to get huge refunds from the IRS.
The loophole is called the Additional Child Tax Credit. It’s a fully-refundable credit of up to $1000 per child, and it’s meant to help working families who have children living at home.
But 13 Investigates has found many undocumented workers are claiming the tax credit for kids who live in Mexico – lots of kids in Mexico.
“We’ve seen sometimes 10 or 12 dependents, most times nieces and nephews, on these tax forms,” the whistleblower told Eyewitness News. “The more you put on there, the more you get back.”
Big Government knows all about the ongoing looting spree.
Last year, the inspector general released a new report showing the problem now costs American tax payers more than $4.2 billion.
However, since the main purpose of our Hopey Changey federal government is to inflict “social justice” by stealing wealth from those who create it to give to those who have no right to it, the IRS is making no discernible effort to stop this insanity. The money will continue to gush as if from a shattered water main until the impending Cloward-Piven collapse brings the sick farce liberals are making of America to an end.

Obama's anti-bullying czar bullies Christian kids | Campaign 2012 | Washington Examiner

Obama's anti-bullying czar bullies Christian kids | Campaign 2012 | Washington Examiner

Dan Savage, who launched the "It gets better" campaign that President Obama incorporated into his outreach to homosexual youth, mocked Christian students because they disagreed with his opinion of Christianity.
Savage, speaking at a seminar for high school journalism students earlier this month, made a profanity-laced attack on "B.S." in the Bible that he said is used to justify gay bullying.
When several Christian students decided to leave the seminar, "Savage noticed them leaving and called them 'pansies,'" according to Citizenlink, a Christian the first reported the incident.
Savage also called the students "pansy asses," according to Rick Tuttle, a high school journalism teacher who attended the speech. "It felt hostile as we were sitting in the audience – especially towards Christians who espouse beliefs that he was literally taking on," Tuttle told Fox News.
One of the CitizenLink writers noted Savage's hypocrisy. "Using profanity to deride the Bible—and then mocking the Christian students after they left the room—is obviously a form of bullying and name-calling," Candi Cushman wrote.
President Obama has allowed Savage to shape his presidential efforts to stop bullying. Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and other White House staff made "It gets better" videos designed to comfort LGBT youth who might be victims of bullying. The videos were recorded as part of Savage's "It gets better" project, designed as a response to reports of  LGBT students committing suicide in order to escap bullying.
If Cushman's argument is correct, Obama might have occasion to remind Christian students that it gets better for them, too. "Too many times in the name of 'tolerance,' Christian students find their faith being openly mocked and belittled in educational environments," she argued.

25 Horrible Statistics About The U.S. Economy That Barack Obama Does Not Want You To Know

25 Horrible Statistics About The U.S. Economy That Barack Obama Does Not Want You To Know

The human capacity for self-delusion truly is remarkable.  Most people out there end up believing exactly what they want to believe even when the truth is staring them right in the face.  Take the U.S. economy for example.  Barack Obama wants to believe that his policies have worked and that the U.S. economy is improving.  So that is what he is telling the American people.  The mainstream media wants to believe that Barack Obama is a good president and that his policies make sense and so they are reporting that we are experiencing an economic recovery.  A very large segment of the U.S. population still fully supports Barack Obama and they want to believe that the economy is getting better so they are buying the propaganda that the mainstream media is feeding them.  But is the U.S. economy really improving?  The truth is that it is not.  The rate of employment among working age Americans is exactly where it was two years ago and household incomes have actually gone down while Obama has been president.  Home ownership levels and home prices continue to decline.  Meanwhile, food and gasoline continue to become even more expensive.  The percentage of Americans that are dependent on the government is at an all-time record high and the U.S. national debt has risen by more than 5 trillion dollars under Obama.  We simply have not seen the type of economic recovery that we have seen after every other economic recession since World War II.
The horrible statistics about the U.S. economy that you are about to read are not talked about much by the mainstream media.  They would rather be "positive" and "upbeat" about the direction that things are headed.
But lying to the American people is not going to help them.  If you are speeding in a car toward a 500 foot cliff, you don't need someone to cheer you on.  Instead, you need someone to slam on the brakes.
The cold, hard reality of the matter is that the U.S. economy is in far worse shape than it was four or five years ago.
We have never come close to recovering from the last recession and another one will be here soon.
The following are 25 horrible statistics about the U.S. economy that Barack Obama does not want you to know....
#1 The percentage of Americans that own homes is dropping rapidly.  According to Gallup, the current level of homeownership in the United States is the lowest that Gallup has ever measured.
#2 Home prices in the U.S. continue to fall like a rock as well.  They have declined for six months in a row and are now down a total of 35 percent from the peak of the housing bubble.  The last time that home prices in the United States were this low was back in 2002.
#3 Last year, an astounding 53 percent of all U.S. college graduates under the age of 25 were either unemployed or underemployed.
#4 Back in 2007, about 10 percent of all unemployed Americans had been out of work for 52 weeks or longer.  Today, that number is above 30 percent.
#5 When Barack Obama first became president, the number of "long-term unemployed workers" in the United States was 2.6 million.  Today, it is 5.3 million.
#6 The average duration of unemployment in the United States is about three times as long as it was back in the year 2000.
#7 Despite what the mainstream media would have us to believe, the truth is that the percentage of working age Americans that are employed is not increasing.  Back in March 2010, 58.5 percent of all working age Americans were employed.  In March 2011, 58.5 percent of all working age Americans were employed. In March 2012, 58.5 percent of all working age Americans were employed.  So how can Barack Obama and the mainstream media claim that the employment situation in the United States is getting better?  The employment rate is still essentially exactly where it was when the last recession supposedly ended.
#8 Back in 1950, more than 80 percent of all men in the United States had jobs.  Today, less than 65 percent of all men in the United States have jobs.
#9 In 1962, 28 percent of all jobs in America were manufacturing jobs.  In 2011, only 9 percent of all jobs in America were manufacturing jobs.
#10 In some areas of Detroit, Michigan you can buy a three bedroom home for just $500.
#11 According to one recent survey, approximately one-third of all Americans are not paying their bills on time at this point.
#12 Since Barack Obama entered the White House, the price of gasoline has risen by more than 100 percent.
#13 The student loan debt bubble continues to expand at a very frightening pace.  Recently it was announced that total student loan debt in the United States has passed the one trillion dollar mark.
#14 Incredibly, one out of every four jobs in the United States pays $10 an hour or less at this point.
#15 Household incomes all over the United States continue to fall.  After adjusting for inflation, median household income in America has declined by 7.8 percent since December 2007.
#16 Over the past several decades, government dependence has risen to unprecedented heights in the United States.  The following is how I described the explosive growth of social welfare benefits in one recent article....
Back in 1960, social welfare benefits made up approximately 10 percent of all salaries and wages.  In the year 2000, social welfare benefits made up approximately 21 percent of all salaries and wages.  Today, social welfare benefits make up approximately 35 percent of all salaries and wages.
#17 In November 2008, 30.8 million Americans were on food stamps.  Today, more than 46 million Americans are on food stamps.
#18 Right now, more than 25 percent of all American children are on food stamps.
#19 According to the U.S. Census Bureau, today 49 percent of all Americans live in a home that receives some form of benefits from the federal government.
#20 Over the next 75 years, Medicare is facing unfunded liabilities of more than 38 trillion dollars.  That comes to $328,404 for each and every household in the United States.
#21 During the first quarter of 2012, U.S. public debt rose by 359.1 billion dollars.  U.S. GDP only rose by 142.4 billion dollars.
#22 At this point, the U.S. national debt is rising by more than 2 million dollars every single minute.
#23 The U.S. national debt has risen by more than 5 trillion dollars since the day that Barack Obama first took office.  In a little more than 3 years Obama has added more to the national debt than the first 41 presidents combined.
#24 The Federal Reserve bought up approximately 61 percent of all government debt issued by the U.S. Treasury Department during 2011.
#25 The Federal Reserve continues to systematically destroy the value of the U.S. dollar.  Since 1970, the U.S. dollar has lost more than 83 percent of its value.
But the horrible economic statistics only tell part of the story.
In communities all over America there is a feeling that something fundamental has changed.  Businesses that have been around for generations are shutting their doors and there is a lot of fear in the air.  The following is a brief excerpt from a recent interview with Richard Yamarone, the senior economist at Bloomberg Brief....
You have to listen to what the small businesses are telling you and right now they are telling you, ‘Hey, I’m the head of a 3rd or 4th generation, 75 or 100 year old business, and I’ve got to shut the doors’ or ‘I’ve got to let people go. And if I’m hiring anybody back, it’s only on a temporary basis.’
Sometimes they do this through a hiring firm so that they can sidestep paying unemployment benefit insurance. So that’s what’s really going on at the grassroots level of the economy. Very, very, grossly different from what you’re seeing in some of these numbers coming out in earnings releases.”
All over the country, millions of hard working Americans are desperately looking for work.  They have been told that "the recession is over", but they are still finding it incredibly difficult to find anyone that will hire them.  The following example is from a recent CNN article....
Joann Cotton, a 54-year-old Columbus, Mississippi, resident, was one of those faces of poverty we met on the tour. Unemployed for three years, Joann has gone from making "$60,000 a year to less than $15,000 overnight." Her husband is disabled and dependent on medicines the couple can no longer afford. They rely on food stamps, which, Joann says, "is depressing as hell."
Receiving government aid, however, has not been as depressing as her job search. Joann says she has applied for at least 300 jobs. Even though she can barely afford gas, she drives to the interviews only to learn that the employers want to hire younger candidates at low wages.
The experiences have taken a toll: "I've aged 10 years in the three years that I've been looking for a job," Joann told us. "I want to get a job so I can just relax and exhale ... but I can't. After a while you just give up."
Meanwhile, Barack Obama and his family continue to live the high life at the expense of the U.S. taxpayer.
Even many Democrats are starting to get very upset about this.  The following is from a recent article by Paul Bedard....
Blue collar Democratic voters, stuck taking depressing “staycations” because they can’t afford gas and hotels, are resentful of the first family’s 17 lavish vacations around the world and don’t want their tax dollars paying for the Obamas’ holidays, according to a new analysis of swing voters.
It simply is not appropriate for the Obamas to be spending millions upon millions upon millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars on luxury vacations when so many Americans are deeply suffering.
But Barack Obama does not want you to know about any of this stuff.
He just wants you to buy his empty propaganda one more time so that he can continue to occupy the White House for another four years.

Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis: GDP Miss Far Bigger Than Announced; Real GDP is 0% Using More Reasonable Deflator

Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis: GDP Miss Far Bigger Than Announced; Real GDP is 0% Using More Reasonable Deflator

The Advance Estimate for Q1 GDP came in at 2.2%, down from 3.0% in the previous quarter, and below most mainstream media estimates of 2.5%.

However, my friend BC notes ....

The GDP deflator is reported to have averaged 1.2% annualized in the past 2 qtrs. Had the trend rate from '11 persisted, the deflator would have subtracted 2.6% annualized from real GDP, resulting in a 2-qtr. growth of real GDP of 0%.

ECRI's Achuthan would appear correct that a recession were imminent instead of looking like a dummy.

Rick Davis at the Consumer Metric Institutes makes a similar calculation.

In their "advanced" estimate of the first quarter 2012 GDP, the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) found that the annualized rate of U.S. domestic economic growth was 2.20%, down more than three-quarters of a percent from the fourth quarter of 2011. The vast bulk of the downturn was in commercial activities, with both fixed investments and inventories lowering the headline number substantially. Consumer spending on both goods and services improved slightly, and the ongoing contraction in governmental spending moderated somewhat. The BEA's bottom-line "real final sales" improved about a half-percent to an annualized growth rate of 1.61% -- hardly robust and certainly not the kind of numbers we would expect to see nearly three years into a recovery.

Once again the BEA has used "deflaters" that will strain the credibility of the public, especially if they buy gasoline. To correct the "nominal" data into "real" numbers the BEA assumed that the annualized inflation rate during 1Q-2012 was 1.54%. As a reminder, lower "deflaters" cause the reported "real" growth rates to increase -- and once again very low seasonally adjusted BEA inflation "deflaters" have been the headline number's best friend. If the raw "nominal" numbers were instead "deflated" by using the seasonally corrected CPI-U calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) for the same time period, nearly the entire headline growth rate vanishes -- and the resulting growth rate would have been a minuscule 0.08% with "real final sales" contracting.

And real per capita disposable income actually shrank during the quarter shrank at an annualized -0.27% rate (from $32,699 per capita to $32,677 per capita) -- and it remains lower than it was 5 quarters ago. -- even using the BEA's optimistic "deflaters." Real-world households likely felt the pinch even more.
Doug Short at Advisor Perspectives has some interesting charts is his post GDP Q1 Advance Estimate Disappoints at 2.2%.

This chart shows the disturbing trends.

GDP Trends

  • Average growth since 1945 is 3.3%
  • Linear regression says growth is trending lower at 2.1%
  • Over the last 10 years, growth averages a mere 1.7%

Take a good look at the last decade. The US only managed 1.7% growth in the biggest housing boom in history followed by the biggest multi-trillion dollar global stimulus effort in world history.

Three years into a recovery, growth (if you believe preposterous deflators) is a mere 2.2% but only 0% if you don't.  Moreover, with parts of Europe in an outright depression, with even Germany and the UK in recession, and with China slowing significantly, the odds the US economy decouples for too much longer is now approaching zero.

I think the ECRI has its recession forecast reasonably correct. However, it may take a well-deserved GDP revision (likely after the next election) to prove it.

Liberal Bias Starts in High School Economics Textbooks

Liberal Bias Starts in High School Economics Textbooks: All across the country, students are studying for Advanced Placement exams coming in the middle of May. Students in AP Economics are taught with Krugman’s Economics for AP by Margaret Ray and David A. Anderson, adapted from Paul Krugman and Robin Wells’ Economics (Second Edition). Our public education system is supposedly one without bias, a place where any student can come and learn without any form of partisanship. Instead, our classrooms are slowly becoming political lecture halls with teachers being pawns to further the doctrine of liberalism and “equality.”

Will Obama Apologize to Women for His Failures? - Reince Priebus - Townhall Conservative Columnists - Page 2

Will Obama Apologize to Women for His Failures? - Reince Priebus - Townhall Conservative Columnists - Page 2: President Obama’s reckless spending has saddled future generations with massive debt.

It is unlikely President Obama will hold himself accountable for his record. Instead, he will attempt to distract from his record—creating diversions and division, while blaming others for his failures.

Democrats’ desperation is so great that they sunk to a new political low, accusing Republicans of waging a “war on women.” The facts, of course, tell a very different story. It’s President Obama’s tax-and-spend policies that have left the economy weak and families hurting.

The Obama presidency has not made life better. And every day, millions of Americans wake up to that harsh reality and wonder how much longer they can endure.

But as Governor Romney said on Tuesday night, “There was a time – not so long ago – when each of us could walk a little taller and stand a little straighter because we had a gift that no one else in the world shared. We were Americans. That meant something different to each of us but it meant something special to all of us. We knew it without question. And so did the world. Those days are coming back.”

Muslim Brotherhood appointed to Homeland Security Council – Glenn Beck

Muslim Brotherhood appointed to Homeland Security Council – Glenn Beck: One of the most shocking scenes in Rumors of War 3: Target U.S. is an exchange between U.S. Representative Louie Gohmert and The Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano. In the clip, Napolitano is testifying in front of Congress about Mohamed Elibiary, a man affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, being granted security clearance and access to sensitive documents. Glenn asked Gohmert to come onto the show to discuss the exchange.

In the film, the narrator explains, “In 2002 Mohamed Elibiary founded the Freedom and Justice Foundation in Plano, Texas. Freedom and Justice is the political party of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt. He was appointed a member of the Homeland Security advisory council which meant Elibiary had access to security documents. In October of 2011, it was reported he took sensitive reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety.”

Barack Obama attempts to intimidate contributors to Mitt Romney's campaign | Conservative Outpost

Barack Obama attempts to intimidate contributors to Mitt Romney's campaign | Conservative Outpost: Try this thought experiment: You decide to donate money to Mitt Romney. You want change in the Oval Office, so you engage in your democratic right to send a check.

Several days later, President Barack Obama, the most powerful man on the planet, singles you out by name. His campaign brands you a Romney donor, shames you for "betting against America," and accuses you of having a "less-than-reputable" record. The message from the man who controls the Justice Department (which can indict you), the SEC (which can fine you), and the IRS (which can audit you), is clear: You made a mistake donating that money.

Are you worried?

Richard Nixon's "enemies list" appalled the country for the simple reason that presidents hold a unique trust. Unlike senators or congressmen, presidents alone represent all Americans. Their powers—to jail, to fine, to bankrupt—are also so vast as to require restraint. Any president who targets a private citizen for his politics is de facto engaged in government intimidation and threats. This is why presidents since Nixon have carefully avoided the practice.

Foreign Policy Magazine Cover Story Covers Women In Middle East | TheBlaze.com: Foreign Policy Magazine’s cover story for its May/June 2012 issue, entitled “Why Do They Hate Us?“, is certainly stirring up controversy. The article, which provides a lens into the lives of women who reside in Arab countries, reinforces much of what we already know about the challenges they face in the region. But some women — particularly feminist Muslims who would typically be praising the fact that these tragic details are being exposed — are criticizing the article’s writer, Egyptian-American Mona Eltahawy.

LP: Insanity: CISPA Just Got Way Worse, And Then Passed On Rushed Vote: Insanity: CISPA Just Got Way Worse, And Then Passed On Rushed Vote
from the this-is-crazy dept

Up until this afternoon, the final vote on CISPA was supposed to be tomorrow. Then, abruptly, it was moved up today—and the House voted in favor of its passage with a vote of 248-168. But that's not even the worst part.

The vote followed the debate on amendments, several of which were passed. Among them was an absolutely terrible change (pdf and embedded below—scroll to amendment #6) to the definition of what the government can do with shared information, put forth by Rep. Quayle. Astonishingly, it was described as limiting the government's power, even though it in fact expands it by adding more items to the list of acceptable purposes for which shared information can be used. Even more astonishingly, it passed with a near-unanimous vote. The CISPA that was just approved by the House is much worse than the CISPA being discussed as recently as this morning.

Subsidizing Student Loans at Taxpayers' Expense: In 2007, Congress halved the federal student loan rate to 3.4 percent but triggered the rates to increase to 6.8 in 2012. House Dem: Unemployed Will Vote For Obama To Keep "Their Benefits" | RealClearPolitics: "We're headed in the right direction. Unemployment continues to drop and those people who are unemployed, they're not going to be voting for the party who wants to cut their benefits, cut access to food stamps, cut job training," Rep. Chaka Fattah (D-PA) said on MSNBC's Al Sharpton program.

"The idea that Republicans are trying to help those who are unemployed is nonsense and I think that on this election day, those who have a job can credit the administration for stabilizing our economy and those who don't know that this administration is trying to put them to work," he said.

Taliban closes dozens of Afghan schools - The Washington Post

Taliban closes dozens of Afghan schools - The Washington Post: The Taliban has shuttered or partially shuttered about 50 schools in southeastern Afghanistan this week, a bold display of the insurgency’s power in a part of the country now at the center of the U.S. war effort.

The closings apparently were in response to an Afghan government decision to ban motorcycles in the southern districts of Ghazni province. In the fall, officials in Ghazni outlawed the use of the vehicles after insurgents used unmarked bikes to carry out attacks on civilians and local authorities.

Vacation backlash: Blue collar Dems jealous, angry at Obamas | Washington Examiner: Blue collar Democratic voters, stuck taking depressing “staycations” because they can’t afford gas and hotels, are resentful of the first family’s 17 lavish vacations around the world and don’t want their tax dollars paying for the Obamas’ holidays, according to a new analysis of swing voters.

“They view everything through their own personal situation and if they can’t afford to do it, they can’t enjoy it, they don’t like Obama using their tax dollars to benefit himself,” said pollster John McLaughlin. “In this case, they see him as out of touch. While they are struggling he’s not sharing in that struggle and he’s basically doing what they can’t do on their tax dollars,” added the GOP pollster.

lllinois moves toward state of insolvency - BostonHerald.com

By George F. Will

After trying to tax Illinois to governmental solvency and economic dynamism, Pat Quinn, a Democrat who has been governor since 2009, now says “our rendezvous with reality has arrived.” Actually, Illinois is still reality-averse, so Americans may soon learn the importance of the freedom to fail in a system of competitive federalism.
Illinois was more heavily taxed than the five contiguous states (Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, Iowa, Wisconsin) even before January 2011, when Quinn got a lame duck Legislature (its successor has fewer Democrats) to raise corporate taxes 30 percent (from 7.3 percent to 9.5 percent), giving Illinois one of the highest state corporate taxes, and the fourth highest combination of national and local corporate taxation in the industrialized world. Since 2009, Quinn has spent more than $500 million in corporate welfare to bribe companies not to flee the tax environment he has created.
Quinn raised personal income taxes 67 percent (from 3 percent to 5 percent), adding about $1,040 to the tax burden of a family of four earning $60,000. Illinois’ unemployment rate increased faster than any other state’s in 2011. Its pension system is the nation’s most underfunded, and the state has floated bond issues to finance pension contributions. Quinn’s recent flirtation with realism — a plan to raise the retirement age to 67 and cap pension cost-of-living adjustments — is less significant than the continuing unrealistic expectation that some Illinois’ pension investments will grow 8.5 percent annually. Although the state Constitution mandates balancing the budget, this is almost meaningless while the state sells bonds to pay for operating expenses (in just 10 years the state’s bonded debt has increased from $9.4 billion to $30 billion), underfunds pensions and other liabilities, and makes vendors wait (they are owed $5.6 billion).
The Illinois Policy Institute, a limited-government think tank, in a report cheekily titled “Another $54 Billion!?” argues that in addition to the $83 billion in pension underfunding the state acknowledges, there is $54 billion in unfunded retiree health liabilities over the next 30 years. Illinois, a stronghold of public employees unions, “is on pace to spend nearly $1 billion on retiree health care benefits in fiscal year 2013, more than double what it spent in 2003. Worse yet, these liabilities are growing more than twice as fast as tax revenues.”
To prepare for Illinois’ probable plunge into insolvency, read “Freedom to Fail: The Keystone of American Federalism” by Paul E. Peterson and Daniel Nadler in the University of Chicago Law Review.
They note that only 25 of the world’s 193 nations have federal systems, and in most of the 25 the freedom of the lower tiers of government is more circumscribed by the central government than American state governments are by the federal government.
American states’ greater freedom — autonomy under America’s system of dual sovereignty — from the central government’s supervision requires that they be disciplined instead by the market for government bonds, and the real possibility of default.
Peterson, a professor of government at Harvard, and Nadler, a doctoral candidate also at Harvard, say collective bargaining rights for government employees pose “a dramatically new challenge to the viability” of American federalism. They cite studies demonstrating that investors’ perceptions of risk of default are correlated with the rate of unionization among government employees. Higher percentages of government employees who are unionized, and larger Democratic shares of state legislative seats, correlate with increases in state borrowing costs.
At least 12 percent of Americans change their residences each year, often moving to more hospitable economic environments. In a system of competitive federalism, Peterson and Nadler write, “If states and localities attempt in a serious way to tax the rich and give to the poor, the rich will depart while the poor will be attracted.” And government revenues and expenditures vary inversely.
From September through December 2008, the premium that investors demanded before they would buy California debt rather than U.S. treasuries jumped from 24 to 271 basis points (100 points equals 1 percent). The bond market, the only remaining reality check for state politicians, must be allowed to work.
Constitutional jurisprudence affirms that states exercising substantial autonomous powers thereby assume concomitant risks. Federal loans or other bailouts of misgoverned states would remove bond market discipline, the only inhibition on the alliance between the Democratic portion of the political class and unionized public employees.

Curbing Midnight Regulation Could Save $220 Billion | American Action Forum

Curbing Midnight Regulation Could Save $220 Billion | American Action Forum
Speaker Boehner and Leader McConnell wrote President Obama recently urging him to withhold “midnight regulations” – ones typically issued after Election Day and before the Inauguration. A simple examination plainly shows how rampant and potentially devastating these midnight regulations can be, often inflicting economic pain.
Regulatory activity is on average 17 percent higher during the “midnight” period than during nonelection years, according to George Washington University Professor Susan Dudley. Worse, they can carry a very high economic cost. An examination of current (and planned) economically significant regulations by the Obama Administration reveals they could cost the economy more than $220 billion.
According to Forum research, there are at least 25 significant regulations that could be finalized during this midnight period.  From fracking, to greenhouse gas standards, to regulations from the Affordable Care Act, there are a raft of pending rules that an outgoing administration could rush.
The highlights, based on preliminary data:
  • The most expensive pending regulation is new CAFE standards for cars and light-duty trucks, at $141 billion in potential “net costs,” according to the EPA.
  • New OSHA “fall protection” regulations could cost $1.5 billion.
  • Controversial workplace dust rules could cost businesses more than $5.5 billion, according to the American Chemistry Council.
  • Pending Department of Labor wage and hour reforms could cost $122 million and eliminate 1,706 jobs, according to administration estimates.
Midnight regulations have reared their pernicious head in past administrations. Often hurried, politically-motivated, and very expensive, the promulgation of these rules would be economically devastating at a time when we can’t afford it.

HoosierAccess » A Reform Kit for Local Government

HoosierAccess » A Reform Kit for Local Government: We often discuss the national political system in terms of checks and balances. These same principles guide our local governmental units, and with good reason. The idea is that the three branches work together, as crucial cogs in a municipal machine, all performing separate but codependent functions. Or, to invoke the dreams of Eliza Doolittle, wouldn’t it be loverly if it really worked that way.

Indiana has a robust and exact system to guide our legislative and executive branches but the execution of their powers, or the lack thereof, allows one to overstep another.

And the raven, never flitting, still is sitting, still is sitting

And the lamp-light o’er him streaming throws his shadow on the floor;

And my soul from out that shadow that lies floating on the floor

Shall be lifted — nevermore!

A sergeant will be discharged for criticizing President Obama on Facebook in a case that called into question the Pentagon’s policies about social media and its limits on the speech of active duty military personnel, the Marine Corps said Wednesday.

Sgt. Gary Stein will get an other-than-honorable discharge and lose most of his benefits for violating the policies, the Corps said.

“I think 99 percent of the soldiers and Marines currently on duty understand the duties of supporting the chain of command and understand their rights of free speech are limited,” he [former Army colonel and military prosecutor] said.

Another terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day for Obama administration at Supreme Court? « Hot Air: How do you know you’ve had a bad day at the Supreme Court — or in Donald Verilli’s case, another bad day? When a justice who is presumably sympathetic to your case tells you your argument “isn’t selling very well” and you might want to try coming up with another, you’re probably having a bad day. Once again, the rough treatment of the Solicitor General in a case brought by the Obama administration seems to signal that the White House will suffer a big loss:

Misunderstanders of Islam at Pentagon suspends class with on Islam - Atlas Shrugs: The Pentagon, in accordance with the shaira, suspended a course for military officers that contained accurate, fact-based material about Islam. Obama is going to take this country down so fast, Americans won't know what hit 'em.

The Pentagon, yes our department of defense, is disarming our military folks, the first and last line of defense in the global jihad. The Pentagon has removed q presentation that "asserted the United States is at war with Islam." Obviously, Islam is at war with the United States. But no, we are not allowed to defend ourselves from the greatest mortal threat the West faces.

Instead, officials stressed that the U.S. is at war with terrorists who have a distorted view of the religion. It is not distorted. It is pure Islam, authentic Islam. It is the Pentagon (and State department and Obama's view) that is distorted and incomprehensible. How many millions have to die in th cause of Islam? How mnay Hundreds of millions have to be slaughtered in jihadi wars, land appropriatins, cultural anniliations and enslavements?

Avenged Sevenfold - Critical Acclaim Lyrics

Avenged Sevenfold - Critical Acclaim Lyrics

Shh quiet, you might piss somebody off

Like me motherfucker, you've been at it for too long

While you feed off others insecurities

You stand in front of me and bite the hand that feeds

(Self-righteousness is wearing thin)

Lies inside your head your best friend

(Heart bleeds but not for fellow man)

Broken glass, your fake reflection

Telling them it's all for something real

Don't respect the words you're speaking

Gone too far, acclaim!!

So how does it feel to know that someones kid in the heart of America

Has blood on their hands, fighting to defend your rights

So you can maintain the lifestyle that insults his family's existence

Well, where I'm from we have a special salute we aim high in the air

Towards all those pompous assholes who spend their days pointing fingers

Fuck you

Shh quiet, you might piss somebody off

Like the heartbeat of this country when antagonized too long

I'll be damned if you count me in as part of your generous hypocrisy

Collecting enemies

(Tabloid gossip queen, worthless man)

There's no need for us to bury you

(Selfish agenda, once again)

Right this way, you've dug your own grave

Telling them it's all for something real

Don't respect the words you're speaking

Gone too far, acclaim!

All the way from the east to the west

We've got this high society looking down on this very foundation

Constantly reminding us that

our actions are the cause of all their problems

Pointing the fingers in every direction

Blaming their own nation for who wins elections

They've never contributed a fucking thing

to the country they love to criticize

Excuse the obscene, ignore the untrue

Depictions we see, try and get through

Admitting mistakes can't hurt

I'm not the last but I sure ain't the first

Shh quiet, you might piss somebody off

(Self-righteousness is wearing thin)

Lies inside your head your best friend

(Heart bleeds but not for fellow man)

Broken glass, your fake reflection

Telling them it's all for something real

Don't respect these words you speaking

Gone too far, acclaim.

The PJ Tatler » Vigilante President, Liberal Fascist
On the heels of such paeans to vigilante governance as this and this, and various cris de coeur that democracy is standing in the way of what was indeed sold, in the closing days of the 2008 campaign, as “fundamental transformation” of said democracy, I was struck by a passage while reading a book last night otherwise unrelated in any way to current politics. But it led to a very disturbing conclusion.

The book is Tobruk by Peter Fitzsimons. Explaining the rise of fascism, Fitzsimons wrote, “there was a growing belief that ordinary democracy could not work any more — because no one could achieve a majority of popular support.” This was startling. It sounded so…familiar.

However, the percentage of minimum wage jobs has declined. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, just 5.2 percent of all hourly paid workers in the U.S. make the minimum wage, which is a smaller percentage than in 1979:

Diamond and Saez Ignore the Effects of Higher Marginal Tax Rates | Advancing a Free Society

Diamond and Saez Ignore the Effects of Higher Marginal Tax Rates | Advancing a Free Society: First, and this is the most important issue with the paper, Profs. Diamond and Saez are unable to produce estimates of the effect higher marginal tax rates have on economic growth or tax revenues in the medium or long term. (I’d note that Scott Sumner highlighted the following excerpt months ago. Still, it should be front and center of the criticism of their recommendation.) From their paper:

It is conceivable that a more progressive tax system could reduce incentives to accumulate human capital in the first place. The logic of the equity-efficiency trade-off would still carry through, but the elasticity e should reflect not only short-run labor supply responses but also long-run responses through education and career choices. While there is a sizable multiperiod optimal tax literature using life-cycle models and generating insights, we unfortunately have little compelling empirical evidence to assess whether taxes affect earnings through those long-run channels.

Obama's Fallon Appearance Violated Campaign Law

Obama's Fallon Appearance Violated Campaign Law: The equal time rule states that if a licensee permits a person “who is a legally qualified candidate for any public office to use a broadcasting station, he shall afford equal opportunities to all other such candidates for that office in the use of such broadcasting station.”

There are exceptions to the rule: appearances on (1) a bona fide newscast, (2) a bona fide news interview, (3) a bona fide news documentary, or (4) on-the-spot coverage of bona fide news events.

Only the second provision could be construed as saving NBC from giving Mitt Romney equal time. But this was not a bona fide news interview. In fact, it wasn’t an interview at all – no questions were asked, no answers were given. It was literally Obama reading a campaign speech over a guitar, a horn, a keyboard, and some drums.

Let's be fully frank: 'Vote Fraud is a Central Democrat Strategy for 'Winning Elections' :: Political News and commentaries :: Hyscience: As columnist David Limbaugh, brother of Rush, asks in a recent column, "Can anyone think of an innocuous reason that President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder oppose state voter ID laws?" The answer is, of course, no -- there's no good reason to oppose voter ID. The real motivation can only be to rig elections. As for the argument that voter ID discriminates against minorities - that itself discriminatory - it's downright racist. It's saying that black Americans and Hispanics are too dumb and incompetent to handle getting ID like everyone else in America.

Think about it for a moment:

You need ID to get welfare.
You need ID to get unemployment.
You need ID to get food stamps.
You need ID to qualify for government assisted housing.
You need ID for Medicare
You need ID for Social Security
You need ID to cash a check (including a welfare check)

Weasel Zippers » Blog Archive » Obama Labor Department To Ban Children From Doing Chores On Family Farms…: A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.

Now, I can barely keep geraniums alive, which I’ve been told is pathetic. I agree. But I was raised a city boy and I am slow to learn the ways of the land.
However, with new regulations coming down from the Department of Labor it will soon be much harder for even the next generation of farmers, the country kids, to learn what they need to learn. One “chore” banned by the new DOL regs- showing livestock.

Children showing livestock is about as “American” as it gets. Have the people at the Department of Labor never read Charlotte’s Web?
Sadly, most probably have not.

UK Slides Back Into Recession in First Double Dip Since 1970s - Europe Business News - CNBC

UK Slides Back Into Recession in First Double Dip Since 1970s - Europe Business News - CNBC: The Office for National Statistics said Britain's gross domestic product fell 0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2012 after contracting by 0.3 percent at the end of 2011, confounding forecasts for 0.1 percent growth.

Most economists had expected Britain's $2.4 trillion economy to eke out modest growth in the early 2012, but these forecasts were upset by the biggest fall in construction output in three years coupled with anaemic service sector growth and a fall in industrial output.

Wednesday's figures will be a deep blow for Britain's Conservative / Liberal Democrat coalition, which has slid in opinion polls since a poorly received annual budget statement in March and risks embarrassment at local elections on May 3.

The Democrats’ "Occupy" guru has an interest-free student loan - HUMAN EVENTS

The Democrats’ "Occupy" guru has an interest-free student loan - HUMAN EVENTS: The ideological guru of the “Occupy” movement is Democrat Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, a leftist hard enough to cut glass with her ideology. Her big contribution to the “income inequality” debate was arguing, in a famous viral video, that since no one can prosper without using public resources, the State rightfully owns all wealth and property. Rich people benefitted disproportionately from those public resources, so there is no morally defensible upper limit to what the State can decide to take from them.

It was soon discovered that Warren is yet another liberal blowhard who doesn’t “walk the walk,” as she decided not to pay the voluntary “millionaires’ tax” in Massachusetts, even though she is extremely well-heeled.

Elder of Ziyon: Egyptian law to allow sex with dead wives???

Elder of Ziyon: Egyptian law to allow sex with dead wives???: Egypt’s National Council for Women (NCW) has appealed to the Islamist-dominated parliament not to approve two controversial laws on the minimum age of marriage and allowing a husband to have sex with his dead wife within six hours of her death according to a report in an Egyptian newspaper.

The appeal came in a message sent by Dr. Mervat al-Talawi, head of the NCW, to the Egyptian People’s Assembly Speaker, Dr. Saad al-Katatni, addressing the woes of Egyptian women, especially after the popular uprising that toppled president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011.

She was referring to two laws: one that would legalize the marriage of girls starting from the age of 14 and the other that permits a husband to have sex with his dead wife within the six hours following her death.

Apparently the US military has previously taken 3 year old recruits (using sarcasm).

In 2008 Obama stated the following on a CNN newscast;

“My father server in World War Two, and when he came home he got the services he needed”.

During this time frame Obama's father would have only been 3 years old.

Rethinking the Hispanic Vote - 2012 Decoded

Rethinking the Hispanic Vote - 2012 Decoded: For Republicans, the illegal immigration litmus test, forcing conservative candidates to toe a hardline on the issue, could very well recede in the near future. A January Pew poll showed the number of Republicans considering illegal immigration as a top issue has plummeted, dropping from 69 percent in 2007 to 48 percent at the beginning of this year. The future Republican positioning on immigration could very well be closer to the policy views of Florida Sen. Marco Rubio than that of hardliners like Iowa Rep. Steve King.

The long-term political implications are equally significant. Democrats have counted Hispanics as a pivotal part of their coalition, but there's no guarantee that as first-generation immigrants assimilate, they will remain reliable partisan voters. Indeed, a complementary Pew Hispanic Center study, released last month, showed immigrants becoming more Republican the longer they've been in this country -- a similar narrative to other first-generation ethnic groups.
All this goes to show that the Hispanic vote will still be very important, but perhaps not in the ways pundits have been anticipating.

Is Disability the New Welfare? - AgainstCronyCapitalism.org

Is Disability the New Welfare? - AgainstCronyCapitalism.org

In 1996 Bill Clinton signed the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act. It has long been hailed as an example where Republicans and Democrats came together and actually got something very worthwhile done.
The Act deeply reformed welfare in America, and limited it’s benefits. It moved the administration to the states to a large degree and funding went to the states via “block grants.”
The most important provision of welfare reform is that it limits eligibility to 60 months of the lifetime of the recipient. After 5 years, welfare benefits stop.
This, for some however is not generous enough. Witness what Vice President Biden’s former Chief Economic Advisor Jared Bernstein writes in his recent piece Your Safety Net on Block Grants.

He believes that the current welfare system is flawed and that it does not provide enough assistance, especially with some states “diverting” money. He writes:
“It is a stark warning about what happens when you turn a federal function over to states, through so-called block grants. They lose their sine qua non, their automatic ability to expand when most needed. And Republicans from Romney to Ryan have pledged to do the exact same thing with the rest of the safety net, including Medicaid and Food Stamps.”
So why not go down other routes where the Feds still have complete power such as Social Security Disability Insurance?
This appears to be happening as this article by John Merline in IBD points out.
Disability rolls have greatly expanded since eligibility requirements were loosened in 1984. But if senior policy makers in the current administration look at Clinton’s welfare reform with such disdain it is logical to think that those running other saftey net programs currently are probably not very interested in curtailing program growth. Indeed some economists see such outlays as a form of “stimulus.” Why would we seek to curtail stimulus, especially stimulus that has the additional benefit of helping those in need?
Welfare reform ties the hands of government. We can’t have that! Especially during a recess… er, I mean, especially during an economic recovery.
Let me say as I have said in the past, life is hard. Tough times can hammer families. For those who truly need assistance I say please do seek it. Whether such assistance should be provided by the state is another very important question and one the co-founder of this site Hunter Lewis addresses in his book Are the Rich Necessary. Everyone who cares about social welfare should read the book, no matter their political disposition.
The point is helping those who fall on hard times is not a bad thing. But we must be aware always that there are some for whom limitations on any state action are wrong. When one program is curtailed another grows. Especially when it can be sold as “stimulus.”
