Ron Paul in 2009 on Iranian TV: Gaza looks like a concentration camp, “and people are making bombs, like, they’re the aggressors?”

ron-paul-nutjob

Wait. So Ron Paul wouldn’t lift a finger to stop the Holocaust, was so concerned about Gaza looking like a concentration camp? Then he goes on to sarcastically question the notion that the terrorists making bombs are the aggressors? I always knew Ron Paul was a loon when it came to foreign policy, but with this campaign and all the stuff coming out, it’s even worse than I thought. Gateway Pundit posted the video of crazy uncle Ron Paul with interview with Iranian state owned English language propaganda channel, Press TV.

Paul urges ending support of Israel, defends Hamas and tactics of suicide bombing, states that Hamas is innocent and the Israeli state are the aggressors. So like Ron Paul doesn’t want to meddle in anyone other country’s affairs, but then he sucks to terrorist groups like Hamas and is instruct Israel on what they should do? Hypocrite.

Shocking. Another electric car recall. « Hot Air

Shocking. Another electric car recall. « Hot Air

Earlier this month we talked about the various problems being experienced by car and automotive component manufacturers who had received taxpayer dollars to put “greener” vehicles on the road. The question also arose as to whether or not the White House was playing politics with a potentially deadly safety concern, as some batteries in these electric cars were demonstrating an annoying tendency to go up in flames.

One of the manufacturers was, as we noted, at least producing a few cars, though… Fisker Automotive. (Of course, they were making them in Finland.) Well, the revolutionary company is back in the news again.

Electric car company that received a $529M federal loan recalls vehicles

An electric vehicle manufacturer that received a $529 million loan from the Energy Department is recalling 239 vehicles.

The Transportation Department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said Thursday that the company, Fisker Automotive, will recall its Karma vehicles made between July 1, 2011, and Nov. 3, 2011, because of a faulty electric battery component that could cause a fire.

“Within the high-voltage battery, certain hose clamps may have been positioned incorrectly during assembly. If positioned incorrectly, the batter compartment cover could interfere with the hose clamps, potentially causing a coolant leak from the cooling hose,” NHTSA said in its recall notice Thursday.

“If coolant enters the battery compartment, an electrical short could occur possibly resulting in a fire.”

It’s a tough call to say which carries more irony here: the fact that they named their car “Karma” or the name of the company itself. (For those not familiar, the Urban Dictionary definition of “fisking” notes: The word is derived from articles written by Robert Fisk that were easily refuted, and refers to a point-by-point debunking of lies and/or idiocies. )

If and when alternate technology vehicles are ready for market and financially viable for the consumer, they will flourish if the demand exists for them and the price point is tolerable for drivers. But the “up in smoke” results of these experiments in Washington picking winners and losers on the taxpayer dime is instructive, if expensive. A123 Systems received $380 million of your money to produce batteries for cars and was also supposed to produce a lot of jobs. Instead, they’ve laid off a large portion of their workforce. A second battery maker, EnerDel, cashed in to the tune of $118 million in the form of a federal grant to make batteries for Think. They are now bankrupt. The list goes on from there.

Is anyone listening? And will they remember these stories next November?

Boehner Won The Payroll Tax Showdown | Fox News: The most egregious flaw in the Senate-passed bill was that it simply could not be implemented.

It appeared, remarkably, that 89 United States senators voted to pass a bill making a major change to the payroll tax without bothering to ask the companies that actually process payrolls if they could implement the change.

The Senate bill did not cleanly extend the current Social Security employee share of 4.2 percent for two months. Instead, it created a two-tiered payroll tax with a rate of 4.2 percent for the first $18,350 of income in those 60 days, with a 6.2 percent rate above that.

Weirdest fatwas of 2011

I'm glad that Al Arabiya published these, because if anyone else did it would be considered Islamophobic (and might get one's website taken down.)

One of the weirdest and most controversial fatwas in 2011 was one issued by an Islamist preacher who lives in Europe. According to this preacher, women are prohibited from eating phallic-shaped fruits and vegetables like cucumbers, bananas, and carrots. Touching or consuming those, he argued, are bound to turn women on and make them engage in sinful fantasies.

In Morocco, the head of the Moroccan Association for Jurisprudence Research stirred both outrage and controversy when he issued a fatwa allowing Muslim men to have sex with their just-deceased wives under the pretext that nothing in Islam prohibits sex with corpses. This fatwa followed a series of sex-related ones issued by the same cleric.

In Somalia, the ultraconservative al-Shabaab al-Mujahedin Movement issued a fatwa during the holy month of Ramadan prohibiting the consumption of sambousak, a triangular pastry stuffed with meat, cheese, or vegetables. The popular snack, they explained, is a symbol of the Trinity in Christianity and is therefore not to be consumed by Muslims.

In Egypt, religious edicts were in most cases mixed with politics. Sheikh Amr Sotouhi, head of the Islamic Preaching Committee at al-Azhar, issued in November a fatwa prohibiting fathers from marrying their daughters to members of the formerly ruling National Democratic Party owing to their “corruption.”

A similar fatwa was issued by the late Sheikh Emad Effat, shot this month during recent clashes between Egyptian protestors and the army. Effat’s fatwa prohibited Muslims from voting for members of the same disbanded party and cited the same reason: corruption.

Mohamed Abdel Hadi, deputy chairman of the Salafi al-Nour Party in the governorate of Dakahliya went as far as saying that the results of the parliamentary elections, in which the party scored an unexpected victory, were mentioned in the holy Quran.

The most outrageous fatwa in Egypt was one that came out last June and in which Egyptian preacher Mohamed al-Zoghbi said eating the meat of the jinn is permissible in Islam and left everyone wondering how anyone can get hold of them in the first place, let alone eat their meat.

Why, you can buy jinn meat at your neighborhood grocery store!

Elder of Ziyon: Unity! Hamas continues to arrest Fatah members in Gaza: As we've been reporting every day this week, Hamas continues to harass Fatah members in Gaza.

Today, they arrested 16 more prominent Fatah members.

According to Palestine Press Agency, the urgency of the recent arrests is to stop Fatah members from putting on any demonstration to celebrate the 47th anniversary of the PLO on Sunday. Hamas has also been ripping down signs and posters that show support for Fatah.

Hollywood Will Kill the Internet If It Can - Against Crony Capitalism

Hollywood Will Kill the Internet If It Can - Against Crony Capitalism

For those who don't know, SOPA or the "Stop Online Piracy Act" currently in the Judiciary Committee will end a free Internet. I am not kidding. All because a bloated, outdated Hollywood can't compete.

We've already written about SOPA here. But SOPA is such an important issue that we'll probably touch on it a few more times before it comes up for a vote and hopefully gets voted down. I would like very much to see VIACOM's chief lobbyist crying in the halls of the Cannon House Office Building after cyberspace hands him a crushing defeat. That would be a great start to 2012.

What is facinating is the degree to which SOPA has galvinized those in the tech world. And thank God, I belive it is vital that this piece of legeslation be stopped, scrapped, placed in the dustbin of history, burned in an incinerator, then the ashes shot via rocket into the nearest black hole.

And I am pleased to see that activists have decided to act in the marketplace to get their point across.

GoDaddy.com, the web-hosting service known particularly for scantily clad spokeswomen on adds during the Superbowl has suffered the wrath of its unhappy customers due to the company's support for SOPA. Thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands (we don't know yet) of website domains have been transferred from GoDaddy.com in recent days to other providers. This collective action by the net brought GoDaddy.com to first take it's name off of a list of companies supporting the bill, and now comes word that GoDaddy.com will now actively oppose SOPA.

This is how you do it folks. If you want to get something addressed it is entirely valid to engage in marketplace warfare or what some call "conscious capitalism." Every purchase is a vote and frankly voting in the marketplace might be more effective than voting at the polls these days.

Muzhik - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Muzhik - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Muzhik or mujik (Russian мужик) refers to a Russian peasant, usually from pre-1917 Imperial Russia. The term connotes a certain degree of poverty, as most muzhiks were serfs before the 1861 agricultural reforms. After that date, serfs were given parcels of land to work and became free peasants. In Russian, the word has some other connotations; its role in modern conversational (informal) Russian plays a similar role to the English-language words "guy", "dude" and "bloke".

The word was introduced in Western languages by its wide use in literature, mainly by Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Leo Tolstoy.

Mithridatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mithridatism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Mithridatism is the practice of protecting oneself against a poison by gradually self-administering non-lethal amounts. The word derives from Mithridates VI, the King of Pontus, who so feared being poisoned that he regularly ingested small doses, aiming to develop immunity. Having been defeated by Pompey, legend has it that Mithridates tried to commit suicide using poison but failed because of his immunity and so had to resort to having a mercenary run him through with his sword.

Archform: Beauty - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Archform: Beauty is a science fiction novel by L. E. Modesitt published in 2002.
[edit] Plot introduction

Archform: Beauty is set in 24th century Earth.
[edit] Reception

Roland Green in his review for Booklist said that "Modesitt creates exceptionally vivid but the narrative continuum somewhat hard to get into. Ultimately most readers will probably be absorbed in the book and glad that the ending doesn't preclude further stories in its setting".[1] Kirkus Reviews said that "Modesitt's always worth reading, but this may well be his best ever."[2] Peter Cannon in his review for Publishers Weekly said that "set against a background of biological terrorism, Modesitt's tale explores social issues (only the rich can afford privacy as well as injections of microscopic, medical robots to stay healthy) sure to resonate with many readers. This brilliant novel is as thought provoking as it is entertaining."[3]

EN271 Expatriation, Dispatriation, and Modern American Writing

EN271 Expatriation, Dispatriation, and Modern American Writing

This module has several overlapping and complementary aims: first, to examine the long tradition of American expatriate writing, while seeing this writing not as an escape from questions of American identity, but as a paradoxically privileged space for a dialectical encounter with them. Thus, we will see how for James, Hawthorne, Stein, Eliot, and Baldwin, to list the most obvious examples, “Europe” becomes an indispensable space and conceptual construct, be it often a fantasmatic one, for the interrogation of any sort of “Americanness.” Similarly, by examining Pound and Williams, we will see how the "cosmopolitan" and "indigenist" divide in American modernism is more complex than it is often presented as being.

Second, the module will also examine writing which if not biographically “expatriate” nevertheless undertakes an explicit revaluation of the relationship between “American” and “European” from the perspective of a rejection of prevailing myths of historical, religious, or cultural separation and difference, especially as they inform American “exceptionalism” (Howe).

Finally, the course will introduce some of the methodology and key issues of transatlantic studies, in an effort to think through how “area studies” and other forms of work on cultural appurtenance and specificity can be rearticulated along comparatist lines, in a movement of resistance to reified regionalist or nationalist ontologies. In this connection, certain authors whose biographies test the question of what or who is or is not “American” (Carpentier, McKay) are deliberately included.

This module will build on recent critical work on cultural identity as performative construction rather than “endangered authenticity” (James Clifford, Judith Butler); language, identity, ethnicity, and dialect (Michael North, Steven Yao); exoticism, authenticity, and conspicuous leisure (Dean MacCannell); as well as recent explorations in transatlantic and transnational literary studies (Robert Crawford, Paul Giles, Wai Chee Dimock, Brent Edwards). Among the module’s major concerns will be such issues and tropes as tourism and cultural capital; the relation of Eros to exoticism; local idiom and linguistic identity; diaspora and cultural palimpsest; and constructions of home and foreign.

6. JUSTIFIED

In the sensational second season of FX's tangy, twangy crime drama, the lethally charming U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Timothy Olyphant) meets his match — in Emmy winner Margo Martindale's monstrously ruthless Kentucky mountain matriarch Mags Bennett. With her deadly Apple Pie moonshine always at arm's reach, she presides over a tangled multi-family feud for control of Harlan County. If only her bumbling offspring had inherited her steel. Justified goes down with the kick of blended whiskey.

8. FRINGE

Living on the fringe of the TV schedule and ratings, Fox's sci-fi/fantasy mind-blower just keeps expanding in its mystical complexity. As Peter Bishop plays peek-a-boo between warring universes, we're treated to cautionary Frankenstein parables of the dangers of playing God. A more than worthy successor to The X-Files.

Texas Santa Claus Killer Was a Muslim « Mark America: I wondered about this story because it had seemed so bizarre: Somebody dressed as Santa Claus killed his entire family on Christmas. Now comes the awful disclosure: The killer was a Muslim man, and this was apparently an “honor killing” in which he murdered his estranged wife and disobedient 19yo daughter, along with other family members, before killing himself. Police aren’t discussing motives, but the investigative reporting seems to reveal one anyway.

Ron Paul Is Insane

Ron Paul Is Insane: He supports overturning Roe v. Wade, his reasoning being that the Federal government is not authorized to decide such controversies. So in order words, Ron Paul hates the fact that the government allows people to get abortions. Instead, he's now going to use the government to disallow people from getting abortions. Irony is not in Ron Paul's dictionary.

Ron Paul Is Insane

Ron Paul Is Insane: One major beef with Ron Paul is the federal income tax. Instead of income taxes once a year, based on how much you earn, he supports raising the National Sales Tax for all of America. He claims to be against raising taxes, but just look at the numbers and how it affects the average citizen. The current sales tax in Chicago is 9%. You get a hamburger at McDonalds, buy a snickers bar at Walmart, you pay 9% in taxes. Ron Paul wants to raise that number to 23%. Who is the primary consumer that this will affect? The middle and poor class. They're the consumers and would have to pay 14% more for everything. The tax is flat for everyone, but should you pay the same tax rate as some guy who makes 6-7 digit figures every year? While everyone else gets in the ass in sales tax, Ron Paul and his buddies don't have to pay a cent in income taxes for their percentage of income they earned that year.

Ron Paul on Education

Ron Paul on Education

Ron Paul thinks we ought to abolish the Department of Education, which is consistent with his libertarian belief that the state should not be in the business of education, that everyone should pay out of pocket for education provided solely by private enterprises. Ron Paul has also traditionally been a supporter of home schooling. As part of the ‘liberty caucus’ in the House, Paul aligns himself with other very conservative republicans with whom he drafted the following declaration:
“The US Department of Education should be abolished, leaving education decision making at the state, local or personal level.
Parents have the right to spend their money on the school or method of schooling they deem appropriate for their children.”
Read about it here: http://www.ontheissues.org/2008/Ron_Paul_Education.htm
At this point, some of his defenders who realize how extreme his position is on education will argue that I am exaggerating his position. He only want to ‘let the states decide’ on education. I find this to be either a totally misinformed or disingenuous argument. Here’s why:
1. ‘Letting the states decide’ is very often evoked by conservatives to attack federal policies they disagree with intensely. For instance, Douglas (in the Lincoln-Douglas slavery debate) used ‘states rights’ to argue that abolition was the wrong policy. His argument was that it should be up to the states to decide for themselves whether or not slavery was wrong, and therefore the federal government had no right to abolish the practice. Another example is the Civil Rights Act and De-Segregation. This was fought tooth and nail by conservatives under the banner of ‘states rights’.
2. The Department of Education administers Pell Grants and Stafford Loans and other student aid, which Ron Paul would cut.
3. Public Education is in serious need of progressive reform and increased funding. Teachers are extremely underpaid in our country and society effectively devalues the profession in allowing this to happen. Education is one of the most important responsibilities of any society or community, and if there is anything our government should invest in, its education. Ron Paul’s position is: the government shouldn’t invest in anything because this requires that we tax the rich.
4. Ron Paul doesn’t just want to abolish the department, he wants to cut the funding that is used to support and provide for public education. Given that schools are under funded, teachers underpaid and college students are drowning in debt because privatized student loans are becoming the norm (instead of grants), Ron Paul has no way of fixing these problems. He is nicknamed ‘Dr. No’ because he consistently votes against all increases in taxes and spending. If he doesn’t believe in increasing taxes and he always votes to cut funding for education, how can he be a supporter of public education?
Public education was suffering terribly in the 1960s as well, even though the previous 15 years were some of the most prosperous and affluent of America’s history. Thanks to Lyndon Johnson, a major initiative was undertaken in 1964-65 to increase public spending on education, building new schools, raising teacher’s pay, etc. It is also because of this initiative that the Pell Grant and Stafford Loan program exists. Today, after decades of conservative government, these already modest programs are taking cuts. Bush (and Ron Paul, you will note) made putative cuts to Pell Grants and Stafford Loans in 2005.
The libertarian position on education runs as follows:
1. The state has no legitimate right to tax citizens except for the limited projects of maintaining police, roads and the military. Some extreme libertarians even take the view that these projects should be privatized as well.
2. Because the state should not tax citizens, it has no right to fund or provide for public education. Education, like shoe stores and grocery stores, should be private enterprises run for a profit by organizations other than the state.
3. If an individual wants to be educated, it is the sole responsibility of that individual to provide the resources necessary to pay for it. So, if parents do not have the resources necessary to afford quality education, then this is the fault of their personal choices in life.
4. Education is NOT a right, it is a commodity to be bought and sold according to market forces. Society should not ensure that everyone has access to education; everyone should figure it out for themselves.
5. It does not matter if education is a ‘social good’ that betters everyone in society, because it would have to be funded through taxation and run as a public institution it is therefore against core libertarian beliefs.
This is an anti-education position. It is Ron Paul’s view, that working-class families making low wages (Paul supports union busting legislation and opposes the minimum wage and the Employee Free Choice Act), should get tax refunds back from their already inadequate income to help them figure out how to educate their children.

Fact Check: Harry Reid‘s Claim That ’Millionaire job Creators…Don’t Exist’ Thoroughly Debunked | TheBlaze.com

“Tax policy should be serious business carried out by serious politicians using real facts and figures. This is why we have the Library of Congress and the Congressional Budget Office, among other expert institutions,” writes Paul Roderick Gregory of Forbes.

Indeed, given the current state of the U.S. economy, tax policy has become an increasingly important subject. And yet, some top-ranking politicians have been making “patently inaccurate, outrageous and bizarre” claims on tax-policy issues and they are doing it without repercussion.

For instance, on Dec.12, while proposing his 1.9 percent surtax on millionaires, Sen. Harry Reid said the following (via Forbes):

Millionaire job creators are like unicorns. They’re impossible to find, and they don’t exist…Only a tiny fraction of people making more than a million dollars, probably less than 1 percent, are small business owners. And only a tiny fraction of that tiny fraction are traditional job creators…Most of these businesses are hedge fund managers or wealthy lawyers. They don’t do much hiring and they don’t need tax breaks.

His comments were based on a Dec. 9 National Public Radio report that claimed to have gone searching for the oft-touted “millionaire jobs creator.” They came back with this earthshattering discovery: “NPR requested help from numerous Republican congressional offices, including House and Senate leadership. They were unable to produce a single millionaire job creator for us to interview.”

However, the NPR report and Sen. Reid’s subsequent claims did not sit well with Paul Roderick Gregory of Forbes. He decided to dig deeper than NPR and thoroughly scrutinized Sen. Reid “facts.”

“Unlike Harry Reid’s office, I went to the IRS’s Table 1.4 ‘Sources of income, adjustments, and tax size of adjusted gross income, 2009’ to check things out,” writes Gregory .

This is what he found:

There are 236,883 tax filers with incomes of a million dollars or more. By Harry Reid’s count, only one percent, or 2,361 of them, are business owners, and a tiny fraction of them create jobs. I do not know what Harry means when he says “a tiny fraction of a tiny fraction.” If we let 5 percent represent Harry’s “tiny fraction,” we are left with 118 businesses owners who earn a million or more and create jobs. Yes, they are only slightly less rare than unicorns, if Harry is to be believed.

This leaves 236,765 million-dollar-plus tax payers, most of whom are “hedge fund managers and wealthy lawyers” who “don’t create jobs and don’t need tax breaks…”

Millionaire tax filers earn a total taxable income of $623 billion, on which they pay the highest average rate (30 percent) of any tax bracket…A 1.9 percent tax surcharge on million-dollar-earners would yield $11 billion, assuming those shifty millionaires take no evasive action to avoid the tax.

Millionaire tax filers earn $221 billion – almost a quarter of a trillion — from business and professions, partnerships, and S-corporations. This is puzzling: If Harry Reid’s figure is correct (2,361 millionaire businesses), then the average millionaire-owned business earns almost a hundred million dollars, and all, except 118 of them, do this without hiring anyone. These super heroes do their own typing, selling, drafting. public relations, building, and manufacturing. They do not need employees. Remarkable!

So what does this mean?

“Millionaire tax filers earn almost a quarter trillion dollars from their businesses. They must hire hundreds of thousands of employees to do so,” Gregory concludes.

If Gregory’s facts are correct, and it is simply the case that Sen. Reid–a top-ranking U.S. politician– is simply lobbing undisciplined and poorly researched “facts” while discussing issues critical to the fiscal health of the country, this does not bode well for the future of the U.S. economy. Unless those in charge start taking this conversation seriously, America will most likely continue its downward spiral into financial ruin.

Furthermore, such “class warfare will be the anchor of the Democrat election playbook,” Gregory predicts. Indeed, it may not be unwarranted to expect more of this type of rhetoric as we approach the 2012 election.

Read the full report here.

Update: Since the original publication of this article, an update has been made. It was mistakenly reported that Sen. Reid’s comments were made on Dec. 6, before the NPR report. This is not true. His comments were based on a report that NPR produced on Dec. 9 and the Senator made his comments on Dec. 12. (h/t Ken Hansen).

The Growing Power & Threat of Islamism: 2011

World Map 2011-Enemies-StrugglesA while back, I created a map overlay demonstrating the worldwide threats, with a focus on Islamism but also including secular and Communist regimes that ideologically or violently oppose us. The world has changed since then. Reluctant allies have distanced themselves in the last 3 years. Lasting allies have fallen. Old enemies have fallen to new enemies. And my current picture editor isn't as good as the one I had then.

There is one small speck of good change in the world. The Sudan split into two nations, helping to decrease the mass genocide of Islamists killing Christians and Animists in the newest Nation of South Sudan. The South Sudanese have an uphill battle to establish their new government and this success began its path years ago. North Sudan remains Islamist, in greater concentration.

Obama-Merkel UnimpressedUnfortunately, Islamism has spread dramatically in the last year, both in its violent attacks and in its takeovers of governments. Tunisia was the first to fall, followed by Egypt, while the Islamist party of Turkey retained its power. Some have hailed these as successes for democracy, but it is a failure of US Foreign Policy and a blow to Freedom.

The Obama Administration's response to seeing mass protests against an old ally was precisely as was the Carter Administration's. Both in Tehran 1978 and Cairo 2011, the Administration urged a Military Coup against an allied leader. The difference is that the Egyptian Generals were actually able to hold the reins of power for a short period of time, while the Iranian Generals had never really taken the concept as reasonable. In both cases, the protestors were a mix of those supporting Freedom and Democracy and those supporting Islamism. Forces for Democracy outnumbered forces for Islamism, but the Islamists were better organized.

World Map 2003-Enemies-StrugglesWhile Arab Spring brought hope that the people would finally get a greater say in their governments, the movements were hi-jacked. The Islamist Parties of Tunisia & Egypt pushed out the seasoned leaders of government and pressed for elections in the vacuum or any organized political opposition. With no other organized political parties, they were able to take power at the critical juncture of writing the new Constitutions.

The Tunisians saw the writing on the wall and began a mass exodous even as the Islamists were flying back in. Italy was overwhelmed with refugees. The Islamist Party of Tunisia gained the votes to be the primary force in the new Constitution.

The Egyptian Generals set up a new government to transition to the future, but the Muslim Brotherhood knew that the longer political parties had to organize, the less influence they would have in the elections and in the resulting writing of the Constitution. As of the final week of 2011, the first two rounds of elections in Egypt have produced a 2/3rds majority of Islamist parties. The biggest opposition to the Islamist party of the Muslim Brotherhood isn't communists, socialists, or democrats. The biggest opposition are even more radical Islamists.

Obama-Biden-adviseAlready, the Islamists of Egypt are looking to their new power. They don't want to kill tourism. They just want to end the "sins" of tourism and protect Egypt from the sins of Western Freedoms, specifically among them, Gay Marriage. The minority (10%) Coptic Christians may have found themselves the subject of attacks before, but the future looks bleaker under the Islamist regime that will follow, with none of the minimal protections of the Army.

As the world began to realize that Arab Spring meant Islamists would take power in elections, the politicians that had made it possible told us that Islamism was political Islam, and hence a victory for democracy. They told us that because the Islamists were instituting their tyranny through government dictate rather than violent overthrow, it was better. What they didn't say, out loud, was that whether political or violent, Islamism wishes to suppress Freedoms, particularly the Freedoms of women. Already the Political Islamists of Egypt are looking to segregate beaches and education.

But the spread of "political" Islamism is not the only advance of the enemy. In Yemen, violent Islamism has combined with political Islamism in what was already a hotbed for terrorism, and it appears to be on the cusp of victory, with the urging of the Obama Administration to push the friendly non-Islamist President out of power.

And Somalia is no closer to an end of the Islamist assault than it was when the Clinton Administration pulled out of it in 1993. In fact, despite greater resolve of the African Union and neighboring Ethiopia and Kenya, the Islamist Violence is spreading into those neighbors, along with the refugees fleeing the famine of Somalia, and the refusal of Islamists to allow food aid in, to starving Somalis.

Al-Qaeda in North Africa continues its violence there, even as Morrocco, Algeria, and Mali make political concessions to Islamism.

But the Al-Qaeda affiliate, Boko Haram, has been increasing its violence exponentially since 2009. Nigeria is quickly becoming the front lines in the War On Terrorism, but the Nigerians have been left to fend for themselves. Boko Haram has an agenda of creating at a minimum the North Nigerian Islamist Dictatorship. Attacking and killing Christians on Christmas has become their annual tradition.

While few could have predicted some of these outcomes in 2008, there is one that a number of experts did predict. It wasn't difficult and didn't take an expert. When it became known that Candidate Obama was stating he would make a policy of aerial bombardments of US Ally Pakistan, even the semi-literate in Foreign Policy stepped up to publicly say it was a bad idea. The question in many minds is whether the Pakistani Nukes will fall to Islamism, or the Iranian Islamism will gain Nuclear Weapons first. At this stage, it appears to be only a matter of time before Islamists have nukes.

Pakistan may have been a reluctant ally from 2001 to 2008, but a reluctant ally is better than a hostile opponent. Obama kept his promise, despite his later claims he wouldn't, and dramatically increased Drone attacks into Pakistan. The Paki people were outraged that their government was powerless to stop the incursions into their airspace. Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and Haqqani gained new support inside Pakistan, as the Pakis increased attacks on US Supply convoys into Afghanistan. The attacks increased when the Paki Government blocked the routes to pressure the Obama Administration to better coordinate with it. Hundred of Thousands, if not Millions of dollars of supplies and fuel have been torched in Pakistan, as well as Pakistani Muslims killed by Islamists.

The Paki People and Government accepted that some attacks would occur on their territory, by us, and were necessary to fight the common enemy, particularly when it came to high level terrorists. The Bush Administration had set up a way to do what had to be done, while allowing the Paki government to save face. The Paki Government occasionally complained publicly, while quietly assisting the Bush Administration take out Al-Qaeda and other terrorists. The mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, himself was captured in a joint US-Pakistani operation.

Today, the Pakistani Government is openly co-operating with Iran while it severs relations with the US. It has shut down the supply routes through Pakistan, and the Islamist Party there is gaining popularity. This is not the result of a single attack that killed OBL. It is the result of years of drone attacks, undermining support for the US.

In the one place where there has been opportunity to turn back Islamism, the Obama Administration did nothing. It didn't even have strong words against the Islamist Government of Iran, even as that old enemy, born under the Carter Administration, slaughtered its citizens in the streets. Perhaps this was the situation Biden promised us when he told us that the Administration would be tested and fail in Foreign Policy. We're left to wonder if Biden kept his promise to "be in the room" while Obama failed.

So, while OBL and al-Awlaki have joined their colleagues the Bush Administration sent to hell, instead of those he sent to Gitmo, the world grows more dangerous daily with the spread of Islamism, electorally and violently, even as we and Our Allies cut the tools and Troops needed to hold the enemy at bay, and potential enemies in war, and current ideological enemies, such as China continue to build their military by double digit budget increases, and great technological advances.

Kennedy, whom Obama believes was a lesser President to him, understood the Domino Effect of Nations falling to communism. Johnson, whom Obama believes one of only 3 Presidents better than him, escalated the Viet Nam War, and interfered so greatly with the decisions of Generals, that he managed to hamstring them from winning.

Even in Iraq, Islamism appears to be on the rise, with Prime Minister Al-Maliki issuing arrest warrants for Sunni politicians the day after the last US Troops pulled out and a series of explosions the day after.

We have seen such a domino like fall of allies to enemy since the Viet Nam War ended in political defeat giving rise to the Carter forfeitures of Central America. But there is no Ronald Reagan on the horizon. There appears to be no resistance in the political world to continued cuts to the Military.

United States v. 434 Main Street, Tewksbury, Mass. (The Motel Caswell)
Federal & Local Law Enforcement Agencies Try to Take Family Motel from Innocent Owners

Caswell

IJ client Russ Caswell and his family have owned and operated the Motel Caswell in Tewksbury, Mass., for two generations. The Caswells may have their property taken from them by local and federal law enforcement officials through a process known as “civil forfeiture.”

Download the report: Inequitable Justice

Imagine you own a million-dollar piece of property free and clear, but then the federal government and local law enforcement agents announce that they are going to take it from you, not compensate you one dime, and then use the money they get from selling your land to pad their budgets—all this even though you have never so much as been accused of a crime, let alone convicted of one.

That is the nightmare Russ Caswell and his family is now facing in Tewksbury, Mass., where they stand to lose the family-operated motel they have owned for two generations.

Seeking to circumvent state law and cash in on the profits, the Tewksbury Police Department is working with the U.S. Department of Justice to take and sell the Caswells property because a tiny fraction of people who have stayed at the Motel Caswell during the past 20 years have been arrested for crimes. Keep in mind, the Caswells themselves have worked closely with law enforcement officials to prevent and report crime on their property. And the arrests the government complains of represent less than .05 percent of the 125,000 rooms the Caswells have rented over that period of time.

Despite all this, the Caswells stand to lose literally everything they have worked for because of this effort by federal and local law enforcement officials not to pursue justice, but rather to police for profit.

How widespread is the problem of civil forfeiture abuse nationwide? In 1986, the year after the U.S. Department of Justice’s Asset Forfeiture Fund was created—the fund that holds the forfeiture proceeds from properties forfeited under federal law and available to be paid out to law enforcement agencies—took in just $93.7 million. Today it holds more than $1.6 billion.

The Institute for Justice, a national public interest law firm that fights civil forfeiture abuse nationwide, is now representing the Caswells in defense of their property and their constitutional rights.

Blog: Obama's Post Recession Job Record in Historical Context: The 1.44 million jobs gained in 2011 is an improvement over the almost one million jobs gained in 2010, and is way better than the millions of jobs lost in the preceding two years. However, the job losses were not destined to continue forever. Moreover, 8.2 (yes, eight point two) million net jobs were gained in the 29 months following the steep and long 1981-1982 recession, and 2.58 million jobs were gained following the short and light recession that ended March 1991. These numbers surpass the poor 1.21 million net jobs gained in the 29 months following the last recession. (The picture is worse if placed in the context of population and economic sizes of then versus now.)

UNESCO Children's Magazine Glorifies Hitler; SWC Launches Protest

"Yes. I killed them [the Jews] so you would all know that they are a nation who spreads destruction all over the world.”

The Simon Wiesenthal Center is calling on UNESCO to end all funding for a Palestinian youth magazine, Zayzafuna for publishing an article exalting Hitler. The magazine, which supposedly promotes democracy and tolerance, published an article by a ten-year-old Palestinian girl, who said that in her dreams that Hitler told her, “Yes. I killed them [the Jews] so you would all know that they are a nation who spreads destruction all over the world.”

Responding to the Wiesenthal Center’s protest, the office of the Director General of UNESCO wrote the Center’s European Director, Dr. Shimon Samuels and said in part,

“Allow me to underscore that UNESCO takes this matter extremely seriously and it cannot but strongly deplore and condemn the statements… We will bring this matter to the attention of the concerned Palestinian authorities.”

“This response is inadequate,” said Rabbi Marvin Hier, founder and dean of the Wiesenthal Center, who added that it was not the first time that this type of hate material has been presented in Palestinian schools. “Can you imagine the audacity of a magazine that supposedly promotes tolerance and democracy using Adolph Hitler as a model? We call on UNESCO to immediately end funding to the Zayafuna magazine.”

“Let us remember that the US is the largest funder of UNESCO and it is largely the American taxpayer who made the UNESCO grant to this magazine possible. It is exactly this kind of behavior by the Palestinians in the educational and cultural domain that makes such a mockery of UNESCO's recent admission of Palestine as a full member.”
