Sagas of Icelanders

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sagas_of_Icelanders

The Sagas of Icelanders (Icelandic: Íslendingasögur)—many of which are also known as family sagas—are prose histories mostly describing events that took place in Iceland in the 10th and early 11th centuries, during the so-called Saga Age. They are the best-known specimens of Icelandic literature.

The Icelanders' sagas are a literary phenomenon of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. They are focused on history, especially genealogical and family history. They reflect the struggle and conflict that arose within the societies of the second and third generations of Icelandic settlers.

The authors of these sagas are unknown. One, Egils saga, is believed by many modern scholars to have been written by Snorri Sturluson, a descendant of the saga's hero, but this remains uncertain. The standard modern edition of Icelandic sagas is known as Íslenzk Fornrit.

Helluland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

Helluland is the name given to one of the three lands discovered by Leif Eriksson sometime around 1000 AD on the North Atlantic coast of North America. Helluland was characterized in the Icelandic sagas (the Eiríks saga rauða and the Grœnlendinga saga) as a land of flat stones, or ground of flat rock (from which it earns its name "Helluland" or "Land of Flat Stones"). This leads historians to guess that Helluland was Baffin Island in the Canadian territory of Nunavut.

It has however also been claimed that it is more fitting with Helluland rather being Northern Labrador, and Markland being Southern Labrador (divided by the Groswater Bay/Lake Melville).[1]

From the testimony of the sagas, the Norse explorers probably made contact with the native Dorset culture of the region, people whom the sagas term as skrælings, but it has been held there were no major cultural ramifications for either side.

Helluland was the first of three lands in North America visited by Leif Eriksson. He decided not to try and settle this land because it was inhospitable. He would later continue south to Markland (probably Labrador) and Vinland (Newfoundland or more southern areas[2]).

In September 2008, the local Nunatsiaq News reported[1] archaeological remains of yarn, rats, tally sticks, a carved wooden face mask depicting Caucasian features, and possible architectural remains, which place European traders and possibly settlers on Baffin Island not later than 1000AD. What the source of this Old World contact may have been is unclear; the report states: "Dating of some yarn and other artifacts, presumed to be left by Vikings on Baffin Island, have produced an age that predates the Vikings by several hundred years. So [...] you have to consider the possibility that as remote as it may seem, these finds may represent evidence of contact with Europeans prior to the Vikings' arrival in Greenland."

Founder's Day

Founder's Day originated from a proclamation by the United States Continental Congress on October 11, 1782 in response to Great Britain's expected military defeat in the American Revolutionary War. The war did not formally end until Congress ratified The Treaty of Paris on January 14, 1784.

The purpose of the proclamation was essentially to thank God for America's good fortune in the Revolutionary War. It is important to note that this did not form the basis for Thanksgiving Day as it is known presently in the United States. Congressional and Presidential declarations named several days of thanks each year throughout the Revolutionary War period and after. This particular day of thanks falls on November 28th.

[edit] Proclamation Text

By the United States in Congress assembled.

PROCLAMATION.***

IT being the indispensable duty of all Nations, not only to offer up their supplications to ALMIGHTY GOD, the giver of all good, for his gracious assistance in a time of distress, but also in a solemn and public manner to give him praise for his goodness in general, and especially for great and signal interpositions of his providence in their behalf: Therefore the United States in Congress assembled, taking into their consideration the many instances of divine goodness to these States, in the course of the important conflict in which they have been so long engaged; the present happy and promising state of public affairs; and the events of the war, in the course of the year now drawing to a close; particularly the harmony of the public Councils, which is so necessary to the success of the public cause; the perfect union and good understanding which has hitherto subsisted between them and their Allies, notwithstanding the artful and unwearied attempts of the common enemy to divide them; the success of the arms of the United States, and those of their Allies, and the acknowledgment of their independence by another European power, whose friendship and commerce must be of great and lasting advantage to these States:----- Do hereby recommend to the inhabitants of these States in general, to observe, and request the several States to interpose their authority in appointing and commanding the observation of THURSDAY the twenty-eight day of NOVEMBER next, as a day of solemn THANKSGIVING to GOD for all his mercies: and they do further recommend to all ranks, to testify to their gratitude to GOD for his goodness, by a cheerful obedience of his laws, and by promoting, each in his station, and by his influence, the practice of true and undefiled religion, which is the great foundation of public prosperity and national happiness.

Done in Congress, at Philadelphia, the eleveth day of October, in the year of our LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty-two, and of our Sovereignty and Independence, the seventh.

The Walrus and the Carpenter speaking to the Oysters, as portrayed by illustrator John Tenniel

"The Walrus and the Carpenter" is a narrative poem by Lewis Carroll that appeared in his book Through the Looking-Glass, published in December 1871. The poem is recited in chapter four, by Tweedledum and Tweedledee to Alice. The poem is composed of 18 stanzas and contains 108 lines, in an alternation of iambic trimeters and iambic tetrameters. The rhyme scheme is ABCBDB, and masculine rhymes appear frequently. The rhyming and rhythmical schema used, as well as some archaisms and syntactical turns, are those of the traditional English ballad.

[] Summary

The Walrus and the Carpenter are the titular characters in the poem, which is recited by Tweedledum and Tweedledee to Alice. Walking upon a beach one night when both sun and moon are visible, the Walrus and Carpenter come upon an offshore bed of oysters, four of whom they invite to join them; to the disapproval of the eldest oyster, many more follow them. After walking along the beach (a point is made of the fact that the oysters are all neatly shod despite having no feet), the two titular characters are revealed to be predatory and eat all of the oysters. After hearing the poem, the good-natured Alice attempts to determine which of the two leading characters might be the more sympathetic, but is thwarted by the twins' further interpretation; for example, the Walrus apparently regrets his actions and cries, but mostly because now there are no more oysters for him to eat.

[] Interpretations

"The time has come," the Walrus said,

"To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings."

Through the Looking-Glass

In The Annotated Alice, Martin Gardner noted that The Walrus and the Carpenter is one of the few poems in the whole of English literature to be remembered for its middle verse rather than its first (see right) and also that when Carroll gave the manuscript for Looking Glass to illustrator John Tenniel, he gave him the choice of drawing a carpenter, a butterfly, or a baronet (since each word would fit the poem's meter). Since Tenniel, rather than Carroll, chose the carpenter, the character's significance in the poem is probably not in his profession. Although the two characters were interpreted as two political types in Carroll's own time[citation needed], there is no indication of what they were intended to represent. Gardner cautions the reader that there is not always intended symbolism in the Alice books, which were made for the imagination of children and not the analysis of "mad people".

Many portions of the Alice tales can be tied only to sheer whimsy, and while Carroll's life observations do make themselves obvious from time to time, it is possible that "The Walrus and the Carpenter" is not one of them. Carroll's character the Duchess says in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that "everything's got a moral, if only you can find it".[1]

In the 1999 film Dogma, Loki is discussing this scene with a nun in an airport in Wisconsin. He relates to the nun that the Walrus and the Carpenter represent religious icons of the East and West, and that their story is of deceit: The Walrus represents Gautama Buddha or Ganesha the Hindu god, with his fat, jolly figure, and the Carpenter represents Jesus, a reference to him being raised a carpenter's son. The oysters represent humanity, being divided and gobbled up ["...shucked and devoured..."] by the Walrus and the Carpenter.

The Hot Air Balloon

A woman was in a hot air balloon ON HER WAY TO MEET A FRIEND FOR A PICNIC DATE. She spotted someone below and lowered closer to the ground to get his attention. She shouted, "Hey, I don't know where I am. I'M LATE FOR AN APPOINTMENT. Can you help me?"

The man responded, "You are in a hot air balloon. You're about FIFTY FEET above the ground, three miles East of the river."

"You must be a REPUBLICAN," the woman replied.

"Why yes!," said the man, "How did you know?".

"Everything you have told me is true, but I do not know what to do with this information. Honeslty, I am still lost. You haven't been any help at all," she explained.

"Ah, you are a DEMOCRAT," noted the man.

"Yes, I am a DEMOCRAT. How did you know?" she asked.

"You have no idea where you are or where you are going. You've gotten to where you are now due to a lot of hot air, YOU'VE MADE PROMISES YOU CANT KEEP, and now you expect me to fix your situation. You are in the same situation now as you were before I came along, but somehow this is my fault!"

Brazil plans to build one million affordable homes

While the United States has been melting down financially in part due to mortgages that went bad, Brazil is launching a plan to build one million homes. Forty percent of these homes will be allocated to people of the lowest income levels. Brazil´s government is hoping this plan will help it to avoid the financial and housing disaster created in the United States.

Senate puts anti-faith bill on fast track

Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman
Liberty Counsel

(Reader),

The deceptive Senate Democrats are at it again.

Liberty Counsel's sources are reporting that the anti-faith
Hate Crimes bill will skip normal procedures and be put
on the fast-track to passage.

According to reports, the Senate leadership will attach
the bill as an amendment to another bill because it is
the "most efficient" way to get it passed -- bypassing
the traditionally longer process of committee deliberations
and markup.

Essentially, Harry Reid and others are going to hide the
bill as an attachment on another bill to expedite passage...
and short-circuit efforts to expose and defeat this
anti-faith measure.

+ + I'm telling Mr. Reid: "I Object!"

I am so outraged by this latest attack on our faith and
families that I have instructed my staff to immediately
deliver Liberty Counsel's more than 80,000 petitions to
Majority Leader Reid protesting this move.

As I write, my staff is finalizing the delivery. I expect
the petitions will arrive in Sen. Reid's office tomorrow
(Friday) and now I need your help to drive the message home.

+ + Action #1 Fax Reid and other key Senators now

I'm asking you to support this very important petition
delivery with a flood of faxes that will literally
overwhelm Sen. Reid's office as well as the offices
of other key leaders in the Senate -- along with your
own two Senators.

Go here right now to schedule your faxes:

http://www.libertyaction.org/r.asp?U=19598&CID=292&RID=21028868

Of course, you can send your own faxes. We have provided
all the information you need at the above link. Either way --
PLEASE SEND YOUR FAXES!

+ + Action #2 -- Call Majority Leader Reid and your Senators

I'm asking every member of our team to call Harry Reid and
tell him you oppose the plan to fast-track the anti-faith,
anti-family Hate Crimes bill.

Majority Leader Harry Reid: 202-224-5556

Majority Whip Dick Durbin: 202-224-9447

Democratic Policy Chair Byron Dorgan: 202-224-3232

Here are the numbers for your two Senators:

Sen. Lugar 202-224-4814

Sen. Bayh 202-224-5623

Talking Points:

1. I am very disappointed that the Senate is considering
fast-tracking the "Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention
Act" (S. 909) by attaching it as an amendment to another bill.

2. This bill deserves its own consideration as a stand-alone bill,
not being rushed forward as an amendment.

3. I oppose the Hate Crimes Prevention Act and urge you to
oppose it as well. It is an attack on faith and family
while granting special rights based on "sexual orientation"
and "gender identity," terms which are not even clearly
defined in the bill.

+ + This is a crucial battle

Very simply, this bill is the start of putting faith and family
values on the wrong side of the law -- and elevating deviant
behavior to protected status.

I will not allow Senate leaders to fast-track this bill and
rush it through without a real debate.

Thank you in advance for taking a stand with me.

Mathew Staver, Founder and Chairman
Liberty Counsel

P.S. Again, I'm sending petitions from more than 80,000 Liberty
Counsel team members directly to Sen. Reid. Please support this
delivery with a flood of phone calls and faxes. Go here to
schedule your faxes:

Pacific Ocean ecosystems hurt by global warming

Pacific Ocean ecosystems hurt by global warming

Baby shellfish off the coasts of Oregon and Washington may be global warming's canary in the coalmine. Hatchery production declined this year by 80% due to ocean acidification, which occurs when the ocean absorbs billions of tons of carbon from the atmosphere. Marine chemists have been studying changes in the ocean´s acid levels for decades but it´s only recently that their findings are pointing to serious changes in marine ecosystems.

Lawmakers had investments in firms bailed out by Congress

Congressional disclosure forms reveal that some key lawmakers had investments in the financial firms they voted to bail out. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi defends the investments and denies any conflict of interest.

Lawmakers Invested in Bailed-Out Firms

Conflict-of-Interest Questions Arise

Washington Post Staff Writers
Thursday, June 11, 2009

Top House lawmakers had considerable holdings in major financial institutions that took billions of dollars in taxpayer bailouts at the end of last year, according to annual financial disclosure reports released yesterday.

This Story

From stock holdings to retirement funds to mortgages, more than 20 House leaders and members of the House Financial Services Committee had large personal stakes in the Wall Street powerhouses whose collapse last year led to an unprecedented government intervention in the marketplace. In some instances those lawmakers, like millions of other investors, sold their holdings at steep losses while others retained the stocks at greatly diminished value.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her husband lost hundreds of thousands of dollars investing in American International Group, which has received $170 billion in government loans and cash injections, making it by far the largest recipient of federal bailout dollars. Republican Whip Eric Cantor (R-Va.) and his wife held stock, retirement plans and other investments worth at least $183,000 and as much as $495,000 in firms benefiting from federal government rescue efforts, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

At least 18 members of the House Financial Services Committee -- which oversees the banking and housing industries at the core of the economic meltdown -- held stock last year in firms that received federal bailout assistance, according to a review of the forms that were available yesterday.

The release of the annual disclosure forms was not scheduled to occur until tomorrow, but the House clerk's office briefly posted many of them online yesterday, apparently by accident. A firm called LegiStorm captured the data and posted them on its Web site. The Senate will release its forms tomorrow.

The disclosure forms require lawmakers to reveal a broad range of personal holdings and liabilities but not the precise value. Lawmakers are not required to disclose any information about their primary residence, only on rental properties that they own, and they do not have to reveal the terms of those mortgages. Also, Congress requires only that lawmakers list the place of employment and board memberships for spouses, not their annual salaries or director's fees received by spouses.

Some ethics watchdogs were critical of members of Congress for investing directly in companies they oversee. "You wonder if they're voting on things because it's good for the country or because it would increase their personal wealth," said Melanie Sloan, executive director of Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

But other legal experts said lawmakers, like thousands of other voters, are not receiving special treatment. "This illustrates one of the purposes of financial disclosure, and that is for the public to be able to judge whether they think that a particular interest creates at least an appearance of a conflict," said Robert L. Walker, the former chief counsel for the House and Senate ethics committees.

Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), chairman of the Financial Services Committee, co-authored the $700 billion bailout legislation and continues to oversee its implementation.

Frank is one of the few lawmakers who go beyond what the law requires, disclosing more than 145 pages of month-to-month statements from his accounts with Citigroup Global Markets. Frank does not invest directly in stocks, instead concentrating largely on state and local bonds, with a small amount directed into mutual funds.

Frank's personal portfolio broke about even for 2008 -- at about $1 million -- because of steady gains in bonds. In an interview yesterday, the self-proclaimed "regular Sam Adams" said others should heed his investment advice: "I get a steady 4.5 percent, and I help my state in the process. I'm a patriot, and I'm making money, too."

Other lawmakers were not so fortunate.

The Pelosi family lost between $100,000 and $1 million as AIG's stock tanked last year. Pelosi's husband reported a partial sale of between $1,000 and $15,000 of AIG stock on the last day of December 2008. For all their stocks and other investments, taking the most conservative estimate, the Pelosis lost at least $730,000 as stocks nose-dived and other investments soured, but they made up those losses in other investment gains.

Pelosi, whose husband, Paul, runs the San Francisco investment firm Financial Leasing Services, remains one of the wealthiest members of Congress. Her 22-page disclosure revealed investments in San Francisco condos, a Napa Valley vineyard, a hotel resort in Rutherford, Calif., and a San Francisco limousine business. She reports $100,000 to $1 million in income last year from grape sales at the vineyard.

Some members of the financial services panel also took a hit on companies that required federal bailout dollars. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-Mich.), a member of the GOP leadership and booster of his state's imploding auto industry, watched his holdings in Chrysler plummet. His disclosure forms for the end of 2007 showed he had between $1,000 and $15,000 in company stock, which by the end of last year fell to between $1 and $1,000 in value. After receiving more than $10 billion in federal assistance late last year, Chrysler was guided into bankruptcy by the Obama administration, which helped engineer this week's sale of Chrysler to the Italian carmaker Fiat.

Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-N.Y.) sold all her holdings in Morgan Stanley in March 2008, cashing out her stock for between $15,000 and $50,000 -- holdings that a year earlier were worth between $50,000 and $100,000, records show.

Protests over Amazon oil projects spread through Peru

Protests are taking place across Peru today, in solidarity with indigenous peoples who oppose oil drilling in the Peruvian Amazon. Clashes between protesters and police turned deadly last Friday, with the number of protestor deaths still a matter of dispute. Today, protesters are blocking roads in northeast Peru and unions are staging a march in the capital city of Lima. President Alan Garcia says the socialist government of neighboring Bolivia is behind the protests, but critics blame Garcia for the current situation, saying he mishandled the initial protests and used excessive force

echo: talker & stalker

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/echo.htm

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~loxias/echo.htm

---

Her name is Echo; she always answers back

Ovid, Metamorphoses III

Echo and Narcissus - painting by Waterhouse, 1913

Poor Echo. Like a computer, she could only repeat what she'd been told. Perhaps her doomed love affair with Narcissus is the ultimate metaphor for the relationship between Man and Machine.

Her story, as told by Ovid (Metamorphoses Book 3)

Echo ...

T

he wretched girl was always a chatterbox. Her friends, Juno's special attendants, found a way of cashing in on her weakness. All of them looked forward to a little "attention" from Jupiter, when their mistress' back was turned, and Echo volunteered to keep Juno chatting whilst they got on with the job. Echo was the only one who never slept with Jupiter - but she was the one Juno punished. And what a sadistic punishment it was! She did not strike her dumb (for this she could have been pitied), but she made her able only to repeat the last words of someone else's speech. At best she would sound ridiculous: at worst ... wait and see!

... & Narcissus

N

arcissus was young and drop-dead gorgeous. He was not yet quite a man, but was not still a boy. His beauty appealed to women and men alike - each gender seeing in him enough of the opposite sex to be overpoweringly attractive. [Would he today be fronting Westlife, or be a Back Street Boy?] But Narcissus was only capable of feeling love for one person - himself.

The Meeting

H

unting was Narcissus' passion. While he was out one day with his friends, chasing the deer, Echo spotted him. She was smitten. She began to stalk him. The nearer she got, the more demanding her lust became. But, because of her problem, she couldn't just go up to him, or use any normal seduction tricks. She had to hide, and wait, and hope he'd say something that could express what she felt when she repeated it back. But meanwhile, Narcissus had got himself lost, and separated from his friends ...

The dialogue

N

arcissus [shouts]: "Is there anyone here?"
Echo [eagerly, scarcely believing her luck]: "Here!"
Narcissus: "Come to me!"
Echo: "Come to me!"
Narcissus [starting to get irritated]: "Why are you avoiding me?"
Echo: "Why are you avoiding me?"
Narcissus: "Here! Come with me!"
Echo [shouting in ecstasy, well aware of the sexual innuendo]: "Come with me!"

She rushes out of her hiding place and flings herself at him. Narcissus, repelled by the idea of physical contact, pushes her away, and starts to run.

Narcissus [savagely]: "Take your hands off me! No! How dare you touch me!"
Echo [screaming]: "Touch me!"

The consequence

He was gone. Echo was alone, frustrated by her unrequited passion. Gradually she pined away. Her beauty dried up, shrivelled and wasted away. Finally only her voice remained. Because she was immortal, she could not die for love, however much she longed to.

The fate of Narcissus

O

ne of his other rejected lovers (male as it happened) prayed to Diana: let him find out what it's like to love someone you can never have. Hunting as usual one day, he found a pool - cool, sheltered and remote. As he bent to drink he saw a sight so irresistibly attractive that he immediately fell in love. At last he knew what it was like to be at the mercy of passion; at last Narcissus was in love - with his own reflection.
He tried to kiss the tantalising image, to hug it. He could not tear himself away from the beauty he hungered to possess. He knew it was himself, but he was powerless to resist.

Echo sees him die

A

nd so, like Echo, Narcissus began to pine away, wasted by an impossible love. Soon his beauty and his strength were gone - consumed by the fire inside. Echo saw it happen. She was still angry, but she knew the pain he was suffering. He cried "Alas!" "Alas!" she repeated. His last words took on a terrible irony:
"Ah, the boy I loved in vain!"
"The boy I loved in vain" she echoed.
"Goodbye" said Narcissus to his reflection.
"Goodbye!" repeated Echo, as he breathed his last.

The transformation

T

here was no sign of his body. Echo and the other nymphs who'd loved him came to mourn but found no one. But a new flower was growing by the pool, its white petals surrounding a red circle: the Narcissus. Men still hear Echo's voice, in the woods or mountains where she hides.

Minister-without-Portfolio Yossi Peled proposes Israeli sanctions on the US

In a sign of growing concern in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government over US President Barack Obama's Middle East policies, Minister-without-Portfolio Yossi Peled proposed Israeli sanctions on the US in a letter to cabinet ministers on Sunday.

Peled added that faced with an American government with an activist agenda that does not mesh with Israel's, traditional reactions are no longer relevant. He said he expected that Obama would eventually realize that appeasement and dialogue with countries that support terror would not have positive results.

In what may be his most controversial suggestion, Peled recommends intervening in American congressional races to weaken Obama and asking American Jewish donors not to contribute to Democratic congressional candidates. He predicted that this would result in Democratic candidates pressuring Obama to become more pro-Israel.

[ This is one hell of a "spoiled brat" mentality, biting the hand that obsessively feeds it. America bankrolls Israel!, though it should not! ]

DHARAMSALA, India — For centuries, the selection of the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama has been steeped in the mysticism of a bygone world.

Buddhists gazing at the Dalai Lama during prayers in Dharamsala, India, on May 26.

On the windswept Tibetan plateau, his closest aides look for divinations in a sacred lake. A mountain god transmits oracular messages by possessing a high lama. Monks scour villages for boys precocious in their spiritual attunement.

All that is about to change, as the current Dalai Lama and his followers in exile here in India compete with the Chinese government for control of how the 15th Dalai Lama will be chosen. The issue is urgent for the Tibetans because the current Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of all Tibetans and the charismatic face of the exile movement, has had recent bouts of ill health. He turns 74 in July.

Both the Chinese and the Tibetan exiles are bracing for an almost inevitable outcome: the emergence into the world of dueling Dalai Lamas — one chosen by the exiles, perhaps by the 14th Dalai Lama himself, and the other by Chinese officials.

“It’s a huge but ultracritical issue, with no clear outcome or solution except one: trouble,” said Robert Barnett, a Tibet scholar at Columbia University. “It is going to end up with two Dalai Lamas and thus with long-running conflict, unless the Chinese agree to a diplomatic solution pretty soon.”

The jockeying has put the Dalai Lama and the Chinese Communist Party in surprising positions. The Dalai Lama said late last month in an interview with The New York Times that all options for choosing his reincarnation were open, including ones that break from tradition. That could mean that the next Dalai Lama would be found outside Tibet, could be a woman or might even be named while the 14th Dalai Lama was still alive, before his soul properly transmigrated. Meanwhile, the party, officially atheist and accused of ravaging Tibetan culture, insists that religious customs must be followed.

A traditional selection process would be easily controlled by the Chinese government, since the process is rooted in the landscape of Tibet, which the Chinese seized in 1951. China has already positioned itself in other ways, including enacting a law in 2007 that says all reincarnations of senior lamas must be approved by the government.

Here in Dharamsala, India, where the Dalai Lama lives, religious leaders have been debating whether to bypass the traditional process. Meanwhile, many Tibetans say they will honor whatever the Dalai Lama decides to do.

“This is a religious matter,” the Dalai Lama said in the interview. “Of course there’s a political implication there, but it’s mainly a religious matter, spiritual matter, so therefore I have to discuss it with leaders, spiritual leaders.”

The figure of the Dalai Lama, head of the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism, is without rival in influence among Tibetans and many Buddhists worldwide. He is revered as the reincarnation of Chenrezig, a deity who has chosen to remain on earth to help people achieve enlightenment. Many of China’s six million Tibetans keep photos of him in their mud-walled homes, monasteries and nomadic tents, or hidden in the folds of their clothes, even though the government has outlawed all images of the Dalai Lama, who fled Tibet in 1959.

The Chinese government accuses the Dalai Lama of being a separatist, though he demands only genuine autonomy for Tibet.

The Communist Party, aware that Buddhism is central to Tibetans, has tried to select and prop up lamas who will support the government while still retaining legitimacy among the people.

In 1995, when the Dalai Lama confirmed a boy in Tibet as the reincarnation of the Panchen Lama, the second-ranking leader of the Gelugpa sect, the Chinese government whisked away the boy and his parents and installed its own child lama. The Dalai Lama’s choice, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, now 20, is still hidden from public view, while the government’s selection shows up at official events to praise Communist policy — and is seen by many Tibetans as a fraud.

Chinese leaders also tried to groom the Karmapa, the reincarnated head of the Kagyu sect, but he fled to India in 1999, at age 14. He now sits by the Dalai Lama at prayer ceremonies here.

“This is one of the chief indicators that China has failed in Tibet,” said Mr. Barnett, the Columbia scholar. “It’s failed to find consistent leadership in Tibet by any Tibetan lama who is really respected by Tibetan people, and who at the same time endorses Communist Party rule.”

Chinese officials are hoping that will change with their selection of the next Dalai Lama. Lian Xianming, a scholar at the China Tibetology Research Center, a government-supported institution in Beijing, said that since the Qing Dynasty, which began in the 17th century, all reincarnations of the Dalai Lama and Panchen Lama required approval by Beijing after going through the traditional method of selection. “The real Dalai Lama will be the one who has gone through the historical process,” he said.

That was the process used to find the current one. After the death of the 13th Dalai Lama in 1933, senior lamas journeyed on horseback to the sacred lake of Lhamo Lhatso, not far from Lhasa, the Tibetan capital. There, they said, they received a vision that pointed to eastern Tibet as the site where the reincarnation would be found. Earlier, a medium of the Nechung Oracle, the mountain god that serves as the state fortuneteller, was said to have turned eastward in a trance.

Three search parties were dispatched; one identified a boy in a farming village as the reincarnation. The boy, Lhamo Dhondrub, had had to prove his worth by, among other things, picking out objects belonging to the 13th Dalai Lama, including spectacles, rosary beads and a walking stick. He was enthroned as the Dalai Lama in 1940.

China seized Tibet in 1951. The Dalai Lama fled in 1959.

Although the Chinese insist the traditional process must be followed, Mr. Barnett said Tibetan Buddhism allows great flexibility in changing old systems.

The Dalai Lama said one possibility was that his reincarnation would be chosen and trained even while he was alive, “so some of my sort of work is carried continuously.” That, however, is a controversial point among lamas, some of whom insist that a successor can be chosen only after the Dalai Lama’s death.

Tibetans fear that a leadership vacuum after the Dalai Lama’s death could weaken the movement. In the past, the periods that followed the deaths of the Dalai Lama, when Tibet was governed by regents, were less stable, because the regents did not have the mandate of the Dalai Lama. Regents also often engaged in power struggles with rivals — stories of one lama poisoning or imprisoning another were not uncommon.

Though the government-in-exile has an elected prime minister, many people here now point to the Karmapa, 23, as a possible interim communal leader following the Dalai Lama’s death. Often at the Dalai Lama’s side, he is seen as charismatic by many Tibetans. He was once endorsed by the Chinese government, speaks Mandarin Chinese and practices Chinese calligraphy, making him a possible bridge to Beijing.

“Because a lot of people have faith and confidence in me, there’s kind of a momentum for me to do something,” he said on the rooftop of a monastery near Dharamsala. “Maybe it’s a challenging situation, but one can put oneself to a test.”

Still, the case of the Karmapa illustrates how fraught selecting a reincarnation can be.

Long ago, the Dalai Lama recognized the man who fled here in 1999 as the 17th Karmapa.

But a senior lama in the Kagyu sect has been promoting another Tibetan living in India as the true successor — a conflict that presages the dilemma of a doppelgänger Dalai Lama.

Former Liberian warlord Charles Taylor 'converts to Judaism

Former Liberian president Charles Taylor, who is on trial in The Hague for alleged crimes against humanity, has reportedly decided to convert to Judaism.

One of Taylor's >wives< told BBC radio that the former warlord, the first African dictator to appear before the international tribunal, "has decided to become a Jew. And he wants to follow the true religion according to him. He wants to know deeply about God."

Taylor's wife said that he still believes in Christ and hoped to embrace both religions simultaneously. ""He wants to follow the two religions," she told BBC.

[ He must be hoping either God or Jews will save him. ]

Five-year-olds left feeling confused and afraid of contact with friends after lesson on homosexuality

Pupils as young as five were left 'confused and worried' after a school assembly to explain homosexuality.

Although it may have been appropriate for older children, they say it left the little ones confused and self-conscious about being friends with classmates of the same sex.

When parents complained to the headmaster, they claim they were treated as 'homophobic' for even raising the issue.

Pupils to be taught 'how to think' in GCSE-style course

They will be taught the difference between an argument and a rant and how to separate fact from opinion, it was disclosed.

Topics covered in the new course - drawn up by one of Britain's biggest exam boards - will include debate over the existence of UFOs, a belief in the after life and arguments for and against euthanasia.

[ This is a surprising move from our Orwellian Politically Correct Establishment. It makes a change from telling pupils WHAT to think. Can Idiosyncrasy be reversed, or is this all a deception? Will the course be scrapped when the pupils start reaching logical conclusions that threaten the ribald orthodoxy? ]

New World Order in evidence as FBI go in to investigate violence by ethnic Hungarians against Romany Gypsies

Roma activists claim that a hit squad is operating, and witnesses talk of masked men and mysterious SUVs that roar off in the night. There are disturbing similarities between the murders: the killers usually target the last house in the village to make a quick getaway. The murders are planned with military precision, say the Hungarian police. The police chief, Jozsef Bencze, has 100 investigators working on the murders. The FBI and Hungary's military intelligence service have been called in. A new rapid-response mechanism can lock down any part of the country within five minutes of a new attack being reported. But there have been no arrests.

That rage has grown louder and more vociferous, as crime rises and feelings of insecurity, especially in the countryside, strengthen. Jobbik is expert at channelling public anger, away from political institutions and on to the streets. It also has a uniformed wing, the Magyar Garda (Hungarian Guard). Its several thousand members wear black paramilitary-style uniforms and march in formation. They target villages, protesting against "Gypsy crime". In December 2007 the Garda held a rally at Tatarszentgyorgy, where Robert and Robika Csorba were killed in February 2009. Garda leaders condemned the crime and there is no evidence that its members were involved. Critics say that the Garda's uniforms are similar to those of the Arrow Cross, the Hungarian Nazi movement, which killed tens of thousands of Jews. Jobbik strongly denies that it is anti-Semitic and has condemned the Holocaust. "We are not against anyone, just for Hungary," its leaders say. Their uniforms are not paramilitary, but are based on the traditional outfits of Hungarian folk dancers. Maybe, but folk dancers don't march in military formation. An allied website - jobbik.net - carries a lengthy article explaining how Hungary is a "Jewish colony".(?)<<

In an already shaky democracy, these feelings of insecurity, whether genuinely rooted or imagined, are the weakest part of the social contract between citizens and the state. In my novel, the conspiracy reintroduces the Gendarmerie, the national paramilitary police force that in 1944 forced half a million Jews on the trains to Auschwitz. The Gendarmerie was disbanded after the Second World War(war of the whites 2). Its return is now a major plank of Jobbik's platform. Last month Jobbik caused uproar when it signed a "co-operation" agreement with the Independent Police Trade Union, a radical group with almost 5,000 members. Consider: thousands of armed public servants, responsible for law and order and public security, are now allied with a far-Right political party with its own uniformed guard. There is a resemblance to the Weimar Republic here.

Facts About the Federal Reserve System (FED)

The FED is not a United States Government agency. It is a private stock company (corporation) patterned after the Bank of England, and other Rothschild central banks. The FED, established by Congress, is privately controlled; its notes are legal tender but are debts of the U.S. government, owed to the Bankers. Commercial paper and government securities are used as fractional reserves to create debt credit. The currency in your wallet represents government debt-credit which is satisfied by your income taxes; you also pay income taxes on the interest your debt-money earns if invested. In sum:

1. The FED is a privately owned corporation. The word "Federal" is as meaningless, as 'Federal' Tire Company of the U.S. government. 2. The FED operates independently of the Executive, Legislative branches of U.S. Government.

3. The FED's books have never been independently audited. It refuses U.S. government audit (GAO).

4. The FED is NOT an agency of the U.S. government, although it was created by Congress, and theoretically can be abolished by Congress. It owns personal property and real-estate. Its employees do not draw U.S. Government pay-checks.

5. The U.S. President, with approval of the Senate, appoints the FED Board of Governors. The majority of them are Wall Street denizens with ILLUMINATI connections. Many are CFR/TRI members. After all, the FED was designed by bankers for bankers.

6. After deducting operating expenses (?) the FED returns what it considers surplus earnings (?) to the U.S. Treasury.

7. FED member banks (Chase-Manhattan for example) hold billions of dollars in U.S. Securities (for which they paid nothing), as reserves for loans on which they charge full interest. They return NO profits to the U.S. Treasury.

8. Member banks use these fractional reserves to extend credit, from 10 to 30 times the amount of the reserves.

9. Owners of FED Class-A stock have never been revealed. Educated guesses indicate that the following are the largest stockholders: The House of Rothschild, JEWS; Lazar Freres Bank of Paris, JEWS; The Schiff family, Kuhn-Loeb Co., JEWS (U.S. Vice President Al Gore's blond daughter recently married a Schiff. They "sell" more than the Lincoln bedroom at White House fund raisers); The Lehmann family, JEWS; The Rockefellers; Israel Seif, London, JEWS; The Bank of England, JEWS, etc.

10. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is the System's most important policy making body. Composed of the seven members of the Board of Governors, and four member-bank presidents, plus the President of the New York FED Bank, FOMC buys and sells government securities, and oversees the System's foreign exchange. FOMC determines the discount rate charged member banks, thereby determining interest rates you pay your lender.

11. Because changes in interest rates, and the amount of money placed in circulation, have profound affects upon the economy, advance notice (leaks) of forthcoming changes in FED policy would be of tremendous advantage to investors. FED advance policies are, therefore, a closely guarded secret. But is absolute security maintained? Do you believe in the Tooth Fairy? Or do members of the Board of Governors, who serve at the ILLUMINATI'S pleasure, perform as conduits of highly sensitive information? No wonder the skyline of every major city is dominated by banking houses. Since Greed has replaced Honor, Money buys anything - Presidents and Prime Ministers, Popes and prelates, Congressmen and Judges.

12. The FED is one of many ILLUMINATI central-banking systems embedded like fat leeches in World population streams.

13. At this writing the United States (We the People) are over six trillion dollars in debt. Men in debt labor for others.

Henry Ford thinks it's stupid and so do I, that for the loan of (its) own money... the United States should be compelled to pay...interest. People who will not turn a shovel of dirt nor contribute a pound of material will collect more money from the United States than all the people who supply all the material and do all the work...why must we pay interest to money-brokers for the use of our own money!
THOMAS A. EDISON, re Congress borrowing from FED

There is no dispute about the fact that our economy is built by bankers lending money that they do not possess, never have possessed, and never will possess, on the calculation that they will not be asked for that money in notes, coin or gold...
CHRISTOPHER HOLLIS, The Breakdown of Money

We now see that while the basic purpose of money is a means of exchange and a storage of value, the ILLUMINATI distorted that original purpose. Money has become a private MONOPOLY, a COMMODITY, and a means of COERCION. Through the FED's ability to issue our nation's currency as DEBT; to expand or contract the amount of money in circulation (M-1) at will; and to raise or lower interest rates at will, it creates so-called business cycles (boom-bust periods) allowing its masters, ILLUMINATI, to control the vitality of World nation-states and, when necessary, punish them for insubordination (Germany, Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), Austria, Iraq, Libya, and South Africa for example).

THE FED: UNLAWFUL AND TREASONOUS ACTIVITY

AMERICA's MONEY BORROWED INTO EXISTENCE

When Congress needs money it borrows from the FED. The loans must be paid back - principal plus interest - by the tax-payers. However, no debt-free money is created with which to pay the interest which must be paid out of the money-supply (M-1) which is debt-money! This is similar to paying off interest on your Visa Credit Card account, by using your Master Card. It's the Old Testament trick of robbing Peter to pay Paul. Payment of principal and interest withdraws money from circulation creating a money shortage. Additional money must be borrowed into circulation with which to pay the interest, creating additional debt.

* At no time can the debt be paid off with the money in circulation!

** When the debt (in the above hypothetical) is carried to the 50th year, all the money in circulation is insufficient to pay interest alone much less the principal.

Under the FED it is mathematically impossible for American citizens to satisfy the enormous debt owed the International Banking cartel. Admittedly, the FED pays to the U.S. Treasury a pittance of its annual profit but that doesn't mitigate against the scam.
